Motorcycle rider hospitalized after Admiral crash

California and Walker are closed for cleanup after a motorcycle-car collision this evening. We just talked with police, who tell us the rider was taken to the hospital. They’re finishing cleaning up the intersection right now, and the damaged motorcycle is being towed.

Bad intersection with limited sight distances. People parking illegally doesn’t help. Earlier today I saw a car parked in a spot by the crosswalk on the northbound side of CA despite the sign that says no parking north of here. Not the first accident here. The Mission worker recently but others in the past.

Dave,  I think all of the new people who move here to WS do not know which way is N, S. E, Or W.  When they see a sign that says no parking West of here and you see three cars parked where they should not be.  People need to educate themselves as to what the parking sign means, and which way is West.  Since we have very limited parking they think it is ok to even park close to a crosswalk or the end of the block.

I agree but common sense should kick in. People just don’t think about what parking where could mean as far as visibility/safety. People drive so fast on CA and people park so close to corners it’s almost impossible to turn right (or left) on to CA from a side street with out having a close call or getting in an accident. I hope this isn’t why the accident occurred.

      Thinking of the motorcyclist.

Reporting parking issues is hit and miss. Sometimes I get through to non emergency quickly but usually one has to wait 20-30 minutes. By then, many people have been endangered or inconvenienced.

I’m surprised the parking police missed them.  It seems that the Seattle Police Parking scooter goes up and down California Ave quite a bit!

There’s a really bad spot that’s heavily abused even though there are 3 no parking signs. It’s just sout of the crosswalk by Marination. I always see cars parked there and it’s dangerous because it’s on a curve and pedestrians can’t see cars coming and cars can’t see peds waiting to cross. I brought it to the DOT’s attention recently and the engineer said PEOs just have to write tickets, they wouldn’t paint the curb red for the sake of safety.  But the city says they want to reduce pedestrian deaths by 2020…

SDOT told us we should paint  our curbs yellow, ourselves, in the legal sightlines either side of our driveways.  (I can’t remember if it’s 2 or 3 feet).  I think some enterprising person could just go paint that curb red,.  And I really hate those N, S, W, E, signs.  It’s not always logical and sorry!  I have NO IDEA which way is west.  It’s also hard to gauge how much is 30 ft.

It’s 5 feet on either side of the driveway. I have mine painted and it helps.

Something needs to be done to make the three blocks north of Admiral on California safe. I live in the neighborhood and drivers always seem to be in a BIG hurry here, despite the fact that there’s heavy pedestrian traffic. There should be a four way stop at College to slow things down, the nearby crosswalk is often ignored. The fact that within a 1 block radius there’s a library, a health club, a movie theater, a number of restaurants, means there’s lots of traffic feeding into California Ave.  And yes, people park too close to the corners, particularly the north corner of California & College, when an SUV parks there you can’t see vehicles traveling southbound, particularly if they’re speeding — I’ve had close calls. Let’s not have any more tragedies!

Sorry, comment time is over.
