Updates: Small fire in 3000 block of Avalon Way; dryer problem in 4700 block Admiral Way

Updates on two incidents that began with notable Seattle Fire responses, minutes apart:

AVALON WAY, 6:05 PM: Seattle Fire is responding to a “fire in building” call in the 3000 block of Avalon Way. (6:14) Avalon is closed at Genesee. Buses are also being rerouted, according to a text from Metro.

(6:19) It’s a mattress fire, WSB’s Christopher Boffoli has learned at the scene, and it’s out. Also, the road is partly reopening. (6:31) Metro says Route 21 is back to normal on Avalon.

Christopher reports people who live in the residence told him the fire was started by a child playing with a lighter.

ADMIRAL WAY, 6:11 PM: Some of the units are being moved from the Avalon call to another one at 4701 SW Admiral Way, where a possible fire was reported, but the first-arriving unit isn’t seeing anything.

(6:15) One crew reports light smoke from a possible electrical problem. (6:22) All units except one are being dismissed. (6:28) WSB’s Patrick Sand says firefighters at the scene tell him this was a dryer problem that caused lots of smoke but no actual fire.

News choppers hovering over? Lots of helicopter noise and multiple fire trucks.

  • Michael B January 2, 2014 (6:09 pm)

Multiple police just responded as well.

Avalon is now closed at the first light coming down the hill. Genesee and Avalon is the intersection that’s closed.

    • WSB January 2, 2014 (6:14 pm)

Thanks. Buses are re-routed at the moment as well.

Never fails…I hear a bunch of sirens, come here and find out what’s going on. You guys rock.

(And yeah, I know I could check the scanner page, but this is easier…)

    Hope everyone’s ok.

and 4701 Admiral is Alki Mail and Dispatch…

looking at Google maps, is the house where the response is on Avalon ne where there was an incident not too long ago regarding a gas leak? it’s in the same vicinity…just curious…

Police are putting crime tape over the intersection at Avalon & Genesee, can I email a pic to someone?

4701 is the Alki Mail and Dispatch building, BTW. I drove up just as the engine arrived.

  • Willis January 2, 2014 (6:23 pm)

    hope no one is hurt!

I think you meant southbound is open. North remains closed.

    • WSB January 2, 2014 (6:31 pm)

I’ll just change it to partly reopened. What I wrote is what was discussed on the radio, but in-person always trumps. We do still have a crew on the scene but they’re focused on the fire aftermath rather than traffic. Thanks. Also, no injuries reported in either incident.

What’s a mattress fire? As in someone likely lit one on fire intentionally? Thanks.

  • neighbor January 2, 2014 (6:39 pm)

Just spoke to a gentleman that lives in the building, I live right next door. He confirms what the WSB states, which is that a child playing with a lighter caused a mattress to catch fire. No one is hurt, thank goodness. Thank you to the Blog for your quick response and to the local fire houses that responded so quickly, as well as the SPD.

Will someone please tell me when the road is fully open so I can come home? Thanks!

    • WSB January 2, 2014 (7:08 pm)

We don’t have anyone left at the scene BUT the SFD call has “closed,” which means their units are all gone, so you should be OK.
