Update: Seattle Police car, SUV collide at 35th/Morgan

(1st two photos by WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand)
ORIGINAL REPORT, 11:42 PM: Avoid the intersection of 35th and Morgan if you happen to be heading out any time soon – we’ve received two messages about a crash there. No major injuries reported, but an ambulance has been called for one person, and one person in the area says it appears traffic headed northbound is being detoured onto Morgan.

12:29 AM: The crash involved two vehicles – and one, which is in the shrubbery by the gas-station sign on the northeast corner of the intersection, is a Seattle Police car. The east side of Morgan is blocked off but 35th is completely passable as of a few minutes ago.

(Photo shared by Mary – note the fence the SPD car crashed through; black SUV at left is other vehicle involved)
12:53 AM: Just went back to try to find out more. The second vehicle, an SUV, has been towed, and the SPD car was about to be. Officers on the scene would say only that two people went to the hospital but neither seemed to have major injuries – we don’t know if either is an officer. The first of the photos we’re adding show that the officer whose car was involved had a shockingly close call – a wooden post went through the windshield on the passenger side.

11:59 AM: The only additional information we’ve been able to get from police so far is that the officer whose car crashed was taken to a hospital and released shortly thereafter.

ADDED TUESDAY MORNING: We checked back in hopes of more information – SPD media-relations Officer Renée Witt says the report is “being transcribed and not yet available.” So we’ll check back again.

I live on this corner and called 911… Police Car hit an SUV… Police car ended up between the Light post and the sign at the gas station with the gas prices on it.. Officer was shaken up pretty good, no one seemed to be injured.. Ambulance was there, but left. I have a few pictures, but I don’t know where to send them.

Crash involved a police car and a sport utility vehicle.

I drove by this accident a hal an hour ago-there appeared to be a wrecked police car on the sidewalk and a damaged SUV as well. They had several fire engines and an ambulance with the stretcher was out.

Just back from checking it out and have added that info.

Curious to hear the story on this one…
Glad nobody is hurt very badly.

    That is a dangerous intersection.

  • Wreck May 26, 2013 (7:25 am)

That wood post through the windshield looks a bit scary. Wow.

  • Heather May 26, 2013 (11:51 am)

    I agree with Wreck…scary.

I saw the collision from down the block, but didn’t see the cruiser until I got closer. I just saw the black suv cross Morgan going north on 35th and then there was a cloud of steam from the broken radiators.

wow, glad nobody was seriously hurt. Looking at Google street view, the patrol car is lucky they only hit the wood fence (even though it went INTO the car) the metal street light pole would have split that car in half at the speed they were going to have a fence impale the car like that.

Wonder if the cop had their dash cam on this time? Wonder if the other officers there responded with their dash cams on? Wasn’t that a requirement passed out and recently reinforced? Wonder who will get cited for this? Wonder who is responsible for the accident and what the official report will say? Wonder if the cam recorded the facts of the accident? Wonder if the citizen will be held whole or if the SPD will do their magic again. Wonder if anyone noted I said magic, not blue magic or the like.

    Hey wonder man.
The SUV turned into the patrol car.
    Just so you know.
    Thanks

Who had the green light ? is what would be good to know if one was on 35th and the other on Morgan if that is where it happened.

  • WonderMan May 27, 2013 (6:53 pm)

As I was saying, I wonder…. “I just saw the black suv cross Morgan going north on 35th and then there was a cloud of steam from the broken radiators.” I wonder if this is the same vehicle that was turning? I wonder if “The SUV turned into the patrol car.” is another SPD plant post in the media to keep things away from their focus? I wonder why the eyewitness statement does not match the later post? I just wonder all the time. I wonder why it has not been picked up by other media or there has not been other note re the issue?

WonderMan – Wonder all you want, but no other media rolled to the scene, to my knowledge. We might not have covered it except for the fact it blocked traffic at a busy intersection; I didn’t have the scanner on when it happened and there is no notation on the 911 log differentiating “crash involving public-safety vehicle” from “crash not involving public-safety vehicle”; it was logged only as “motor-vehicle accident,” standard if a full-fledged Medic unit is not required. It took me two passes by the scene to even notice the wrecked police car in the bushes, at which time I went back home for the better photographer and better camera – our initial reader tips said simply “there is something going on at 35th/Morgan and traffic is being diverted.”

As for why no other news organization has bothered following up, ask your favorite TV station/newspaper/whatever directly, if you think they should have. The citywide media usually follows us closely and is never shy about taking a story and running with it if they see us doing something of interest. I believe the Times linked to our story from their home page for a while. But this is a holiday weekend, during which (I speak from citywide-news-management experience) TV in particular is skeleton-staffed, and the big story this weekend has taken crews far out of town (Skagit Bridge collapse, which has dominated regional news since it happened on Thursday night), so I’m not hugely surprised nobody rolled a photog to the scene, especially considering nobody was seriously hurt. One station did not have its usual Sunday morning newscast this weekend because of tennis, so I would wager they didn’t even have an overnight photographer on Saturday night – my former station did not staff weekend overnights if there was no a.m. news. Anyway, I can’t follow up any further with SPD etc. till tomorrow, but I certainly plan to.

T.R. would you do everybody a favor and ask the other newsies to please find something other than the skagit bridge to repeat adinfinetum. thx

    • WSB May 28, 2013 (4:41 pm)

I have a photo I was saving for the followup. Would love to hear more about the crash from your perspective – and hope you are OK! – as I noted above, police still have not provided more information, so I will be checking with them again tomorrow – I’m reachable off the site at editor@westseattleblog.com – TR

WSB, any further updates regarding this accident? Still curious.

    • WSB June 5, 2013 (6:38 pm)

I have one tidbit. The civilian driver was cited for failure to yield. Otherwise, I’m still trying to figure out how to get more on the rest of the circumstances.

Sorry, comment time is over.
