Update: Woman dead in White Center stabbing

ORIGINAL REPORT, 5:54 PM: A helicopter’s been seen over south West Seattle, and we believe it’s linked to a stabbing reported at 13th/100th in White Center. According to King County Sheriff’s Office via Twitter, the suspect is the victim’s son. Headed that way.

6:24 PM UPDATE: The 69-year-old victim has died, and her 42-year-old son is in custody, KCSO spokesperson Sgt. Cindi West says. We’re continuing to cover this on our partner site White Center Now (where our coverage includes video of Sgt. West explaining what they know so far).

  • pfeller November 13, 2012 (5:59 pm)

was wondering what the helicopter was looking for.
Love your site, always seems to be able to report what’s going on.
    Thanks!

Thanks for the info. You guys are quick. I saw it slowly go all the way down California to Alki, it seemed. Are they looking for someone?

I bought a house 2 blocks north of WC a year and a half ago. Thought it might be gentrified in 3-5 years, but now thinking maybe I should move. Too much crime here still.

But WSB, love that I noticed the copter, went to you site and you had already reported on it. Please post a description ASAP. I wouldn’t doubt if the dirtbag lives near me.

  • BobbieE November 13, 2012 (6:05 pm)

Always appreciate the WSB’s cover of breaking news in my neighborhood. Though I’m getting weary of so much violence in White Center. Be careful King Co. Sheriff.

  • Sally November 13, 2012 (6:32 pm)

Saw the response flying down 16th toward the scene, came home to find current info on this site. Thank you! I have a rental home in Arbor Heights, but live in SW White Center, love my neighborhood.

This is exactly why those people were unhappy on Meanders Rest. move from WS to WC. :(

    • WSB November 13, 2012 (7:16 pm)

Rainy, I don’t want to reopen that can of worms again. But domestic violence – which is what this is, if it’s true that the killer is the son – happens EVERYWHERE and ANYWHERE. Police report to non-deadly cases of it all over West Seattle (and elsewhere) all day and all night. – TR

Did this happen in a bar, house or what? This guy probably had a nice size rap sheet .

    • WSB November 13, 2012 (11:49 pm)

The suspect has finally been booked into jail. As Alki Res speculates, it does appear he had something of a record, though everything I am finding so far is assault or protection order, including some prior domestic violence. Specific case records are not available at this hour because the ECR system closes down overnight.

This is my street. I almost couldn’t get to my house, and I was hoping it wasn’t bad. Then I saw the crime scene tape. :(

May the road rise up to meet her.

  • Kgdlg November 13, 2012 (7:47 pm)

So tragic. Unity Village is a very tight knit safe community, this is so sad.

  • West Seattle since 1979 November 13, 2012 (8:02 pm)

    That’s so sad.

  • Steph November 13, 2012 (8:17 pm)

Exactly WSB. Crime like this happens everywhere. WC has nothing on parts of San Fran & San Jose Cali. Nothing. Get over it people. Move to Bellview and you will get the same stuff.

  • Amanda November 13, 2012 (8:20 pm)

    Thanks Tracy.

  • Meg November 13, 2012 (9:38 pm)

Just remember the murder (the killer still not caught) of Gregette Guy that was on Beachdrive. The “safe” part of West Seattle. Crime doesn’t see differences in backgrounds-race, economics, sex etc.

Thanks always for being such a great community conscience TR.

So appreciative of you, WSB, for clearly and consistently maintaining the integrity of this site.

Domestic violence is a very bad thing. Anyone who encourages it is also partly responsible for the end result.

  • Scooterista November 14, 2012 (6:48 am)

Seconding what Steph said. I grew up in Bellevue. The daughter of our next door neighbors had been close friends with one of Ted Bundy’s victims. The night it happened, my sister was house-sitting a few doors down from where a teenage boy and his friend slayed his entire family and then fled to Canada. Violence happens everywhere. And most of the time, statistically, the victim knows the attacker/killer. It’s not so much where you live, but who you know.

  • ME November 14, 2012 (6:52 am)

Domestic Violence is very bad … and a piece of paper doesn’t keep the bad person away … no matter where you live!

  • monroe1200 November 14, 2012 (7:03 am)

WSB – Do you have, or is it possible to have, a map of WS & WC that pinpoints the crime scenes and/or 911 calls that come into the police dept.? I think it would be helpfull to see where the pockets of crime are more substantial. That way if I see a trend in a area I can be more aware and alert (which I should be anyways). The more information, the better. PS – I echo all of us here on WSB, you guys are great! Keep up the great coverage.

    • WSB November 14, 2012 (7:23 am)

For recent cases, you can check out the city’s police-report map, which is lagged six to 12 hours or so, and the actual narratives in the report links don’t show up for at least several days. The county (which serves White Center) has no corresponding online resource.
      .
      http://web6.seattle.gov/mnm/policereports.aspx
      .
There are some categories of crime, however, that are not shown on the map. But you can use the controls on the left to change the date range, excise certain types if you just want to, for example, look at how many (X) happened in the last (X). And to get WS front and forward, just grab the map with your mouse/touch pad and move it to the area you want to look at. (Downtown comes up as default.)
      .
The “statistics” tab is also a way of looking at the stats/trends that the city provides in a longer look.

    Thanks TR!

  • D-Mom November 14, 2012 (7:51 am)

Thanks for the links. Do you know how to find out more about a specific report? I see one of a suspicious person just yesterday morning right by my house.

    • WSB November 14, 2012 (7:59 am)

If a link says “view police report with narrative” – and it usually won’t for at least three or four days, if ever (believe me, I spend a lot of time looking at this stuff) – you can get a bit of information. If it just says “view police report,” there’s no narrative. You should be prompted, by following the link, to sign up for an account to view reports, if you don’t have one already. There is no charge.
