The annual firefighters’ fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association starts with teams at intersections around the city 2-6 pm next Tuesday-Wednesday (and again during two days in September). The planned intersections in West Seattle are:

*Delridge Way SW/ SW Orchard St
*California/Admiral
*California/Alaska
*Harbor/Spokane
*California/Fauntleroy

More background info from today’s announcement, ahead:

Teams of local Fire Fighters will fan out across the city on August 7 & 8, then again on September 18 & 19 from 2-6pm with boots in hand, as they kick off their annual Fill-the-Boot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Last year, the International Association of Fire Fighters raised nearly 28 million for MDA, making the grand-total for the 57-year tradition over $455 million! In 2011 the Seattle Fire Department boot campaign raised an impressive $120,000 ranking them in the top 50 of all fire departments nationally, and for the eighth year in a row – #1 department in Washington State.

This is Seattle’s 16th year helping MDA Fill-the-Boot. Fire Fighters will be at 30 intersections, raising their boots to benefit the MDA.

Proceeds raised during the street-side campaign will help support MDA’s local services and research programs, including a week long summer camp for kids, support groups, and local clinics. MDA is a volunteer health agency working to defeat more than 40 forms of Muscular Dystrophy, including ALS and related diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services and far-reaching professional and public health education. MDA maintains clinics for area adults and children affected by neuromuscular diseases at Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the University of Washington Medical Center.

I’ve visited MDA camp. The kids have a great time and are exceptionally well cared for. Medical staff and other volunteers come back year after year.

MDA is worth your support. My grandkids will be dropping my contribution in a boot next week.

Sorry, comment time is over.
