West Seattle Crime Watch: Cents-less car prowling

From Regina:

As I was leaving for work this morning, I noticed 2 of my vehicles had been gone through, glove compartments open, papers all over. They made off with a iPod I had tucked under the seat and took most of the change from the ashtray – about sixty cents but left all the pennies (thanks, guys!). I will be checking my neighbor’s surveillance cameras after work, I will post a description of the losers so others can be on alert. I live on 21st & Roxbury [map], and I did leave both cars unlocked, so I take blame for this too. Please remember to lock your doors!

P.S. This is one of the crimes you can report online – find the form here.

My roomie’s car was prowled on Sunday morning around 4am. We pulled up behind him as he was going through the car. He took off and we called the cops. We’re on 39th/Dakota. Next night a friend of ours car was stolen from as well and she lives above Jeff Square. Both cars were left unlocked. Probably same guy. Lock your doors and he’ll pass right by.

Actually probably a good thing you left your doors unlocked or your windows may have been broken. Good thing they did not get much and did not destroy your car. Sorry this is how you had to start your day though, hope is only gets better :-)

I have had my car prowled on two separate occasions at different addresses. I also found all stuff on my seat from the glove box and console. I don’t think I left my car unlocked on either occasion however I am just glad they didn’t break the window to get in. When they leave the door was left ajar so as not make noise.

Hi Regina – We live at 23rd and Roxbury and have had a lot of this on our block along with burglary. We have a house we’ve been watching – maybe we can get together via email and compare notes? smyliegrl at gmail dot com.

I’ve had cars stolen twice out of my carport and rifled through twice. I now follow these 2 rules. I leave nothing of value in the cars and I leave the doors unlocked. It’s expensive to replace a smashed window or a lock someone’s jammed with a screwdriver. It’s always disconcerting to see that someone has been through the cars but at least I’ve lost nothing (maybe some quarters) and I don’t have to get anything fixed. I do use the online form to report it to the police. And the two times the car was stolen? Doors were locked. If someone wants your car, they’ll take it.

Be sure and check whether you still have the car’s registration paper. If that’s been stolen, you’ll want to report the theft and replace the paper.

to back up with Seattleseabug said: A thief broke out the window of my car last year to get inside; my advice is to keep nothing at all of value in your car (actually, nothing but your registration), and then consider not locking it. Sure, your car may get ransacked and you’ll feel voilated, but you won’t have to deal with an expensive window repair.

Leave nothing of value and……..Car Alarm

This happens almost regularly for me, but I have an older car and little of value inside.

We had two cars crashed into and one of those rifled last night and another one had radio stolen last week all within feet of 20th Ave. S.W./S.W. 100th. Bet same person(s) as rifled your cars on Roxbury/21st. Yes, post any photo or video footage your neighbor might have and we’ll keep a watch over here.
