West Seattle Crime Watch: Police searching for robber

11:23 PM: Just got a text inquiring about this, so here’s what we know: Police are searching north of California/Charlestown after a man reported being robbed at gunpoint. He said it happened around California/Manning (map). There’s a K-9 team helping in the search. More as we get it.

11:54 PM: No word of an arrest so far. Initial description, according to WSB contributor Katie Meyer, was “white male, 30, 5’10, beard, mustache, red jacket, reached in waistband and pulled out gun.”

1:17 PM TUESDAY:
Checked back with police. No arrest.

You know – I often rave to other West Seattle and non-West Seattle friends about how awesome the blog is – but I’ve never told you guys. Tonight is a perfect example as to why you rock! – I saw a cop car trolling by my house and wondered what was going on – so what do I do? I pull up the blog – and there’s nothing – I refresh 3 minutes later, and there it is! An explanation of why they are searching my neighborhood (unthankfully apparently for a robbing at gunpoint!…). You guys are like everyone’s favorite nosey neighbor :) And I mean that in the best way possible. Seriously! I love you – keep up the good work!!

Thanks … one prerequisite for making a living covering news (which I’ve done for 30+ years) is to be always curious/inquisitive/nosy/whatever you want to call it. And this requires a lot of teamwork … in this case, props to WSB contributor Katie Meyer (who earlier today was our 1st alert on the nail-shop crash) for catching it on the scanner at a moment when I wasn’t listening. If you ever hit refresh again and what you’re wondering about is NOT on the page, or on our FB or Twitter streams … please don’t ever hesitate to text (one person did indeed, for this incident) “What’s up with the police at (wherever)?” That’s often our early warning. 206-293-6302, round the clock. … TR

I was walking my dog after working late, around 12:30 or 1 a.m., and SPD cruisers were zooming all over my neighborhood at that time. One of them stopped & asked if I’d seen the suspect, but I hadn’t. I decided I’d better get back home at that point, but I was 3 blocks away. I’ve never felt unsafe in my neighborhood, but on the way back, I noticed far too many porch lights turned off, dark side yards and driveways, and an abundance of nice dark hiding places in yards, despite the streets having block watch signs.

I’m all for saving energy, but we need those lights on to prevent creeps from hiding in the dark. Street crimes are on the rise, and everyone has to dig in and fight to prevent it from getting out of control.

    Any conclusion to this story?

Nope, I just talked with police, no arrest made (will be adding that to the story).

Yeah, I was walking home on Manning, and got followed by a police car for a good two blocks with the spotlight on me. Mildly disconcerting to know if I had been a little sooner, coulda been me that was at gunpoint.

I was walking up California around 12 and got shined on at least once with a few cop cars slowing down to look at me. I was scared of the cops first then realized there must be someone out there and feared a gunfight. Tons of cop cars out. I am 5’5″, female and unarmed.

A black subaru was stolen during this time frame off of 44th/Charlestown area. The owner was woken by bright lights from cop cars, went to look at what was going on and noticed his car missing. Related? hhhhmmmm……

the alley behind the 7-11 on 35th and charlestown has a lot of activity, young kids in “gangsta” apparel and a lot of foot traffic. I walk my dogs at night in hopes of catching these knuckleheads in some criminal act.

Sorry, comment time is over.
