Update: 1 teen stabbed, 1 in custody in 4500 block Delridge

ORIGINAL 8:55 AM REPORT: The stabbing happened in the 4500 block of Delridge. Scanner says the victim is a 17-year-old boy who’s about to be taken to Harborview. We have one person on the scene and another on the way, details as we get them. 9:10 AM UPDATE: Police tell us on the scene that this began as “a fight between two juveniles” – one is hurt, one is in custody. 10:06 AM UPDATE: We have confirmed that this happened at Southwest Youth and Family Services. We waited at the scene to talk with SWYFS executive director Steve Daschle. He says it happened in one of the classrooms at SWYFS – both boys attend classes in one of the programs there. One other student and teacher were present when it happened. Right now, Daschle says, the students are debriefing with counselors and staff; they are working to convey to them all that it’s a safe place to be. He says there is no indication this was gang-related or anything more than a disagreement between the two involved. SWYFS happens to be the lead agency in our area working on the city’s Youth Violence Prevention Initiative; Daschle acknowledges an incident like this is a setback, but promises they will work even harder toward their goals. 10:40 AM UPDATE: Just talked to Det. Mark Jamieson in SPD media unit – he says the victim was stabbed in the back and leg but the wounds were described as “not life-threatening.” Weapon was a “kitchen knife” and was recovered at the scene. Christopher’s video shows the sizable emergency response – which cleared fast once the situation was resolved:

“they are working to convey to them all that it’s a safe place to be”

Based on this event, that doesn’t seem accurate or wise.

Not feeling good about bringing my toddler to that new park now. When we were there last there were drug dealers parked in the lot right next to the park we saw them get out and sell right in in the park. Crime happens in the city yes, but its really a shame when a kiddie park is just feet away.

IP, fwiw, if our account wasn’t clear enough, this happened inside the SWYFS facility, which is a complex of offices/classrooms in a standalone building south of the community center. Doesn’t make it any better or less troubling but just since you voiced a concern about the park, wanted to re-state that … We have covered many a great thing in that office too – some milestones for the classes and programs that are held there – TR

Delridge is a fun place to live aint it?

My grandparents lived in Delridge; my mother was born there, and I’ve spent a major portion of my life in and about Delridge and West Seattle.

In fact, SWYFS most certainly IS a safe place for youth and families. The incident that occurred was between 2 students known to one another, and was in NO way gang related or related to an ongoing threat to anyone else. It was not “random violence.” Other students and visitors to SWYFS are in no danger.

That SWYFS has gone since 1979 with no other violent incidents gives it a pretty good track record for safety, I’d say. And it is groups like SWYFS who work hard to assure that even more violence doesn’t occur; we can all be grateful that they are here in West Seattle.

I know SWYFS and think this agency does great things to keep us safer. I went to their fundraiser at Salty’s recently which was terrifically fun! Bottom line: 30 years without any other event like this is amazing — you sure can’t say that about the malls around here and who do they help?

” i’ll pass ” If you have time to write a comment about how you saw drug dealers dealing at the park you have time to call the police and do something about it!

    Jiggers & Wsm –

Like nearly every other neighborhood in West Seattle, Delridge does have public safety and violence issues. Alki, the Alaska Junction, Admiral, etc., none are immune from it. If you think otherwise you are out of touch, or delusional.

To kick at a place such as SWYFS and Delridge when it is down is really lame. This was a bad incident and a rough day at SWYFS. I feel for the kids and staff that have to go through this.

I own a house south of the area on Delridge and I feel safer than I ever did only a block away from Alki.
Delridge has lower crime than Alki or Fauntleroy.

Sorry, comment time is over.
