Seen on the Admiral Theater marquee and website: A morning with JP Patches, legendary TV clown, 11 am next Saturday, May 17; tickets available online. So we don’t have to wait till parade season to see him here in West Seattle! The campaign for a JP Patches statue continues, by the way; find out more at his site.

    WSB comes through (again)!
I just bought 2 tickets for this and I’m currently in Chicago catching up on WS until I come home.

We saw JP a couple of weeks ago in Tacoma at another fundraiser and it was a hoot and a half.

I would urge anyone that can make this event to do so. Even those that didn’t “grow up” around these parts, and never saw him when they were a kid. It might give you an idea why 30/40/50-something native and long time Puget Sounders talk about “The Clown” so fondly, and go totally nuts at any opportunity to see him.

    .

I would gladly be there going nuts with everyone else on Saturday, but sadly, I have to work :(

    .

Now I normally would not suggest breaking theater policy, especially at a non-corporate, family/locally owned theater such as the Admiral, but a thought crossed my mind it might be kinda fun to stop by Atomic Boys on the way, and buy some candy cigarettes to smuggle in, to add to the being a kid in the ’60’s experience! :P

    .

It’s not like one would be bringing in their own Milk Duds, or home popped popcorn!

is it just me or shouldnt that clown retire by now? he looks just plain scary now that he is 100 years old. i think its time to throw in the clown shoes!

He turned 80 last month and he is fighting cancer. Sometimes keeping busy keeps you alive. I saw him in person while working fundraiser phones at KCTS in December (as part of my old life in tv) and he was livelier than some people I’ve met who are half his age!

    changingtimes,

I don’t know if you grew up here with JP or not. If you did, are serious in your post and can’t appreciate all that he has done over the decades, your comment is so offensive towards him, you probably wouldn’t even qualify as a Boris Buddy.

    .

Chris Wedes, (JP) and Bob Newman (Gertrude/ Ketchikan/Gorrrrrssst/Boris S Wort et al) have done more for the Puget Sound Community than many others will ever do. Not just the impact they had doing the show, but with what they have done for Children’s Orthopedic.

    .

Not only has Chris been recently battling Cancer, as WSB mentioned, Bob has been battling MS for probably around 40 years, and continued making appearences, with JP mostly as Gertrude, until a few years ago when he “retired” the character. He has even appeared at on least one occasion that I know of, as Ketch, after his retirement.

    .

I could spend all day up on the soap box about this, but will step down for now.

Boris Buddys must have planned the date. I have to work on Saturday, also. I was lucky enough to go to the Museum of History and Industry program last August, both Mr. Wedes and the Fabulous Bob Newman were there, and Pat Cashman hosted the evening.

Very well put Mike…aka misw. I just purchased 2 tickets to see JP. The last time I saw him in person was 1972 and he did help me celebrate my B-Day many times…I would have recorded it on the TV but I only had a TV….

When we went to the JP fundraiser in Tacoma a couple of weeks ago Gertrude was there as a special surprise guest.
Wonder if he’ll be there this time? (I hope, I hope, I hope.)

oh i see the issue! everyone posting here like born and raised are elderly and must have grown up with him. sorry i didnt mean to offend anyone, i have never heard of the clown and only saw pics.

  • BORN&RAISED WEST SEATTLEITE May 21, 2008 (9:16 pm)

Eldely my *ss, 50 is not old!! You got to know who you are speaking about before you make silly coments!!

  • WSB May 21, 2008 (10:23 pm)

Reminds me of my last month in TV, when someone wrote a script describing an accident victim as “elderly” and the woman turned out to be 60ish. (Yes, they got in trouble for that.) If elderly is to be used at all, MAYBE it kicks in around 80. Just MAYBE. I sat next to an 80-year-old guy at tonight’s Delridge District Council meeting and he was as lively as some of the folks in the room well under half his age.

Sorry, comment time is over.
