ALKI ELEMENTARY: Demolition begins
Thanks for the tips. Demolition has begun at Alki Elementary. First to go, the old portable on the north side of the school. The work is not affecting traffic on the adjacent streets (at least so far), though debris hauling might change that. This is proceeding though the city Hearing Examiner’s Office has yet to issue its decision on appeals of some of the project’s zoning exceptions; as we reported, the appeals were argued in a daylong hearing last week, and a ruling is promised by mid-August. The project will demolish and replace the main school building but not the gym, which it shares with adjacent Alki Community Center.

More wasted money
“put up a parking lot?”
The amount of waste in a demo like this is appalling. Even if some materials are salvaged or recycled, the vast majority go into a landfill. We need expanded recycling techniques and mandates for reusing our dwindling resources.
WOW, I wish they would have brought in a salvage crew to recycle some of this.
Second Use salvaged some of the furnishings https://www.facebook.com/100064696117791/posts/pfbid0Gi1Urhy7B6hxmxXMBmaTuFW9oSfbDr25gG2EonJuyEx4dXcZ3qoamESWveouUWrzl/?mibextid=cr9u03
Not a parking space on-site planned.I wonder why the temporary classroom structures could not have been repurposed for shelters?
This was a really old “portable.” I doubt it could have been moved. Not like the ones the district does move around from school to school.
I’m sad to see this happening in my neighborhood, and I’m going to miss seeing that beautiful triptych painting on the west wall of that portable – such a beautiful piece of art.
It’s still around and will be put up elsewhere on the new school.
Where are kids from Alki going during the rebuild?
The former Schmitz Park Elementary.
This is so exciting! So glad we’ll have a brand new, state-of-the-art school in our community. This is so exciting for the children in our neighborhood. The benefit for them will be enormous.
