UPDATE: Vault fire on Alki, 3,000-customer power outage in West Seattle
8:07 AM: Thanks for the texts/tweets/etc. Getting multiple reports of a power outage in multiple areas. Almost 3,000 customers per City Light map.
8:10 AM: There’s a “vault fire” call in the 1100 block of Alki.
8:15 AM: First crews on scene there are seeing “small amount of smoke” from a grate, per SFD.
8:20 AM: Alki Avenue is blocked by the fire response (here’s where that’s happening).
8:25 AM: Our crew is en route; we’re monitoring the fire per scanner in the meantime. The vault is underground in front of a five-story Alki condo building. Crews report the smoke has dissipated.
8:42 AM: Our crew has arrived and reports that traffic is blocked for about 100 yards either way. The fire scene is by Luna/Anchor Park. City Light is on scene too.
Per scanner, meantime, the SFD response is being downsized.
8:59 AM: Getting reports that at least some have their power back.
9:03 AM: Alki Avenue has reopened; SFD has completely closed out of the call. SCL map says the outage is down to 100 customers.
P.S. SCL blamed the fire on “a failed underground cable, which burned some of the insulation.”

35th and Andover. Power has been out for 10 minutes.
We are out in North Admiral
What is a vault fire?
Underground.
Youngstown out south of the steel mill.
Power out at Admiral junction.
Still have power in the 1200 block of Alki Ave, but cable/internet is down.
Out in Luna Park neighborhood
What causes a vault fire? I seems like it happens quite often.
Last one in West Seattle was February

Before that, December 2016, blamed on equipment failure

West Bay Coffee and Smoothies power out
Power restored North Admiral at 8:55 am
Power back on 😀
Power is still out at Harbor and 34th near the West Seattle freeway. Activspace building on emergency lights only
Power back. Above T5 off Admiral.
Thanks for the updates. The City Light map is slower to update than it used to be so “we’re back” reports are especially helpful!
.. and updated now. All but ~100 customers are back on.
My power is back in North Delridge :)
Huge shout out to Seattle City Light from everyone here at Brookdale Admiral Heights, we were told that the power wouldn’t be back until noon and it was back on a few minutes to 9am.
Huge shout-out to The Blog for keeping us up-to-date!!! I was in a building on Harbor Avenue (across from the Water Taxi etc.) and our buildings were out but we couldn’t find out why. We couldn’t get out of the building because the elevator was down and the basement garage door wasn’t working–I share these details only so others will appreciate what ‘power out’ means to the disabled who need the elevators and automatic garage doors , not to mention the fear and stress of know knowing the cause. However, the power came back on around 8:20 or so. Thanks again to Seattle City Light AND the West Seattle Blog !!!
