Celebrate the arrival of summer at the Northwest Wine Academy’s festive event featuring the latest wine releases, gifts baskets and more. Featured vintages that will be available for sampling and sale are the 2009 Barrel Fermented Chardonnay, 2009 No Oak Chardonnay, 2009 Late Harvest Viognier 375 ml (limited edition), 2009 Collaboration White Blend (mostly Roussanne with a touch of Viognier), and 2007 Cabernet Franc. Can’t make it to the summer release event? Wines are available for purchase on site weekdays from 10 am – 4 pm (closed during the quarter break June 21-25). From July 16 through September 3, the retail store will close at 1 pm on Fridays. Since releasing its first five vintages in 2005, the NWA has consistently created award-winning, student-produced wines that have medaled at numerous prestigious competitions. Most recently NWA wines earned seven Grand Awards of Excellence from the 2010 Seattle Wine Awards Tasting Panel – Silver / 2008 Muscat Love, 2007 Cabernet Franc; Bronze / 2008 Chardonnay, 2007 Syrah; and Outstanding / 2008 White Table Wine, 2007 Barbera, and 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon/Syrah Blend. The winning wines will be featured at the upcoming 5th Annual Grand Awards Tasting consumer sampling event on Sunday, June 13, at the Rainier Club. South Seattle Community College’s Northwest Wine Academy, established in 2004, is a first-of-its-kind program in Western Washington and offers three associate degree and certificate programs – Wine Making, Wine Marketing & Sales, and Food & Wine Pairing. The Academy complements the college’s highly regarded and award-winning Culinary Arts program and bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management program.

This year marks the 8th Annual Seattle Playwrights Studio (SPS) Showcase with several of the group’s newer members joining in the fun. The SPS showcase is three evenings of staged readings offering audience members a glimpse at how plays are developed, and providing the playwrights a chance to see if their particular script has some legs to it. This year’s playwrights include John Ruoff, Freddie Brinster, Carl Nelson, Ann Teplick, Frank Merritt, Lyn Coffin, Len Goodisman, Lea Galanter, Jeff Mandels, Babs Lindsay, and Jorj Savage. Their mix of shorts, one-acts and full-length scripts guarantee 3 evenings of eclectic entertainment. Mark your calendars for June 11, 12 and 13. Each evening begins at 7:00 and concludes with a reception where audiences can meet and greet the playwrights, actors, and directors. Tickets are available for only $5 per ticket per night. SATURDAY MORNING-AFTERNOON: West Seattle Tool Library Grand Opening, 9 am-2 pm, South Seattle Community College Garden Center – After months of anticipation, The West Seattle Tool Library will officially open its doors to the public during its Grand Opening on Saturday, June 12th, from 9am-2pm. Membership to the Tool Library is on a pay-what-you-can basis, as are the weekly rental rates on all of its tools. As an added feature to the day, SeaChar and Second Use will both be providing free, public workshops throughout the day on topics ranging from biochar stoves to window replacement techniques. All are welcome to attend! The West Seattle Tool Library was made possible by a Neighborhood Matching Funds Grant from the Department of Neighborhoods.

JUNE 12: Join us for Pawty with a Purpose, a fundraiser for Val Mallinson, author of The Dog Lover’s Companion to the Pacific Northwest. Since December 2009, Val has been unable to work due to complications from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Val is recovering, but there’s a backlog of medical bills to be paid. The disability insurance company is fighting the family, denying coverage and delaying much-needed financial relief. That’s where you come in! Although you don’t need an excuse to party, this one is as good as it gets. Also, 10% of all proceeds will be donated to Advocacy for Patients with Chronic Illnesses. This resource helps patients get information, advice, and advocacy services, regardless of ability to pay.
