Seattle is starting to feel like Boston — and not in a good way. When I stop and motion timid peds to cross, I’m always afraid I’m luring them to danger or death. I’ve actually had peds get as far as my car and have to wait for the cars which don’t stop.
August 19, 2008 at 10:44 pm #634187pamMemberWell – I am glad I didn’t ‘salute’ her! Thanks for the info. Next time I’ll cross at an unmarked intersection to avoid the confusion (kidding!)
August 19, 2008 at 10:46 pm #634188scooby-snaxMemberi almost got hit at the calif./college crosswalk minutes ago! believe me…i saluted!!!!
August 20, 2008 at 4:37 am #634189SaraMemberSomeone got killed recently, last week, on 35th Ave SW. This is the third time I can remember in recent years that someone died on 35th. Seems like there are accidents near Morgan & 35th almost every week. People drive way too fast, and the stoplights are few. The crossing times at the crosswalks are too short. I’ve seen little kids crossing the street by themselves to get to school in the morning – no parent, no crossing guard, no light, no crosswalk. It just isn’t a pedestrian-friendly street, it’s very dangerous. Delridge is exactly the same way. How many people have to die before the City gets a clue and puts in more lights? How many people have to die before drivers get a clue and slow down? I don’t want to kill anyone. As a driver I know sometimes you don’t see people on foot, maybe it’s raining or dark or they’re in a shadow, crossing against the light, and they’re wearing dark clothing, and they just waltz out there like they have a reason to think you see them. But I also don’t drive 50 mph in residential neighborhoods near schools or playgrounds, or tailgate people trying to turn. My child almost got flattened by the driver of an SUV who was doing 50 easily, right next to the Whale Tail playground, on that narrow residential street, with lots of kids out there. A couple seconds different, and that would have been it.
August 20, 2008 at 4:02 pm #634190WSratsinacageMemberSo, does anyone wonder why cross walks get removed by the city? They get sued, that is why. So, it seems a little hypocritical for them to say we removed the cross walk but all intersections are cross walks. I know what the law is and I understand why it is that way. At times, I wish everyone heeded this law. It is hard to see people waiting to cross when there is a car or dumpster parked illegally.
And for what it’s worth being required to have car insurance is BS. The person who hit me did not have it and I had to pay out of pocket. When I protested to the police they said as long as he/she identified themseleves before they left, that is all that matters. So I was a victim of a hit and run basically and there was nothing I could do about it except deal with my physical and financial pain.
August 20, 2008 at 4:05 pm #634191beachdrivegirlParticipantWSratsinacage… funny we got into a debate about all of the cities “laws” a few months back… it all started b/c of off-leash dogs. It makes me laugh to see how quickly another topic leads back to another topic. I actually challenged people to think about how many times people broke the law..truely was shocking @ how many times i did in a day without even thinking about it.
August 20, 2008 at 4:06 pm #634192WSratsinacageMemberI meant to bring this up the other day.. what’s with people who cross at their leisure at the all walk intersection? Wait for the damn light! Read the frickin’ signs! Hasn’t this been all walk for 40 years or so? Why is this so hard to comprehend? Same with no left turns on to Alaska before 7 PM. This light goes quick so don’t screw the people behind you by waiting to turn left.
August 20, 2008 at 4:08 pm #634193WSratsinacageMemberJimmyG and Beachdrive Girl, I felt like it was reasonable to question why the disagreement towards my comment when ken and angel crest said similar things but your comments were directed at mine.
August 20, 2008 at 4:10 pm #634194WSratsinacageMemberBDG, yeah I remember that discussion about leashes. So, how was I openly admitting I endangered peoples safety?
August 20, 2008 at 4:25 pm #634195beachdrivegirlParticipantyou are right you never openly said you would endanger someones saftey what you did say however though I felt your comment implied it when you said you would risk getting a ticket by not stopping @ a cross walk b/c you didnt want to risk getting rear ended to me that was endangering peoples safety.
August 20, 2008 at 4:49 pm #634196WSratsinacageMemberk, just wonderin’
August 20, 2008 at 4:59 pm #634197beachdrivegirlParticipantthanks for asking. i dont mind explainign my thoughts i know i can be wrong at times.. and overly stubborn about certain beliefs of mine. :)
August 20, 2008 at 5:10 pm #634198austinMemberI love when people hanging out just outside puerto vallarta don’t want to block the door to the restaurant so they post up at the entrance to the crosswalk, then pretend not to notice when cars mistakenly choose to stop for them. Even better when they don’t move out of the way of actual pedestrians trying to use the crosswalk. :/
August 20, 2008 at 6:18 pm #634199WSratsinacageMemberyeah I’ve noticed that too austin. Interestingly, it’s only at the junction cross walks. People stand texting, bs-ing etc and I stop for them think they want to cross then it’s like wtf. For those that wonder, I always stop at these types of cross walks as well as the ones at controlled intersections.
