Since there are a bunch of posts going around asking if anyone is interested in starting up a group – I thought I would put out mine.
Any budding community has an active artist community, correct? I think it would be great to start up an artist group here in WS! A place for artists to talk, rant, rave and share. It could be be all encompassing – everything from computer, paint, clay or music to more obscure.
What do you think?
June 9, 2008 at 5:48 am #626993austinMemberSounds good! I’m interested in hearing about the sorts of artistic endeavors folk around here have. I don’t know if I’m an ‘artist’ exactly though I try to conduct myself in artistic manner.
Lately I’ve been dividing my time between sculpture and photography. Rant, as well as Rave, for glassblowing; I’m enamored with the medium but due to being somewhat clumsy my only saving grace is my eye for color. Shaping, at this point, not so much. I enjoy it a great deal and hope that someday it’ll click into place, and am practicing all I can in the meantime. This summer I’m studying welding, blacksmithing and stonecarving, each of which I’m looking forward to immensely.
I’m a prolific photographer, but have only shot digitally and know nothing about _actual_ photography. Once I put together a collection online which is .. suitable for a general audience, I’ll have it linked through my user name here. Until then you’ll just have to take my word for it. In addition to taking photos, I also have done some damaged photograph and document digital restoration / reproduction, which is artistic to a degree. I also want to mention that some of the photojournalism that I see on this blog is out of sight, totally awesome. Props to those who contribute here.
Other things?
June 10, 2008 at 4:15 am #626994ellenaterMemberThis would be a dream come true for me:
-photography, ceramics, knitting, and music. Would like to try painting.
June 10, 2008 at 4:18 am #626995beachdrivegirlParticipantAnyone want to help with photography lessons? i got an awesome new camera for christmas (my wish) but know I am not taking advantage of it…
June 10, 2008 at 4:24 am #626996TheVelvetBulldogMemberI’ve really been looking for motivation to get back into my artwork (watercolor painting) and would like to hang out with some artsy folks to get the creative juices flowing again. Note that Youngstown Cultural Arts Center has live-in artists who occasionally have shows. Might be cool to try to hook up with some of them who live their art every day.
June 10, 2008 at 5:30 am #626997ellenaterMemberbeachdrivegirl,
That’s right up my alley. What do you have?
June 10, 2008 at 6:17 am #626998megMemberIn the interest of some “lightening up” of the other group-seeking posts going on…. I applaud the idea of starting an artists group! I think it is a wonderful idea for the community…it would be great to have a budding arts scene. I have little ability in this area myself, but certainly appreciate and admire those who do. So count me in if there are ever shows or sales or the like!
June 10, 2008 at 2:46 pm #626999beachdrivegirlParticipantEllenater,
my camera is at home and I forget what exact model but will look it up and who knows maybe we can chat about it all on Saturday if you are coming to the get togehter?
June 10, 2008 at 4:12 pm #627000thriftwaygirlParticipantSince we like the idea…any thoughts where would be a good place to meet?
Somewhere that (with the space) that wouldn’t mind us carting in some of our creations to show.
Uptown Espresso has a pretty big dining area???
June 11, 2008 at 12:15 am #627001ellenaterMemberAgain, I think this is brilliant! I really like the idea of having all different mediums, too. It’s so hard to talk art with my dog as she just stares at me…
beachdrivegirl, I am still up in the air about Saturday. It’s not looking good though as my sitter is sick :( But if not then, we can work out another time if you like. I have a BFA in Photo. and love to play with cameras. :)
June 11, 2008 at 12:29 am #627002beachdrivegirlParticipantThat would be awesoem Ellenater! I would really appreciate it. I will look @ my calendar and let you know some other times that might work too. :)
June 11, 2008 at 1:35 am #627003charlabobParticipantWhen you-all get ready to have your first multi-media show and sale, the charlabobs are there. I have absolutely no artistic talent, except for “supporting the arts”–ie, shopping. Seriously, when you get ready to sell, I’ll be happy to help you put together something.
June 15, 2008 at 6:27 pm #627004iheartlondonMemberI’m interested as well. I do clothing design, knitting, spinning and other things. i can also teach knitting and spinning. keep me posted :) nichole
June 15, 2008 at 9:54 pm #627005JoBParticipanti am also interested.. i dabble in fabric arts, beading, and just about anything tactile:)
not strong enough any more to throw pots or to blow glass… and i think stained glass is probably now out.. but i am still exploring my options..
i would love to find a play group.. if for no other reason than to have someone to visit shows with… or do a photo walk.. or scrounge the fleas markets/garage sales/ goodwills for material … or to do play days with found art.. or?????
in the meantime.. i think i feel well enough to begin some actual gardening:)
June 16, 2008 at 3:58 am #627006spookbrianMemberwho would like to see a west seattle music/art community center ala school of rock? I have a dream and I need help.
June 16, 2008 at 4:40 am #627007inactiveMemberI’ve been thinking about taking knitting lessons. I would be very interested in hearing more about that if it happens. Thanks!
June 16, 2008 at 6:41 pm #627008addParticipantI’m not an artist, but “some of my best friends are” … thought I would share this cool company that supports artists. It is in Seattle but a WS friend works there. http://www.imagekind.com
June 16, 2008 at 7:17 pm #627009ErikParticipantI’ve been known to whip out my sax on occasion and play with a rat-city band. A school of rock/blues sounds cool.
June 17, 2008 at 2:14 am #627010TheVelvetBulldogMemberWSdood: If, for some reason you’d feel more comfortable having a man show you how to knit, the coolest knitter-guy named Morgan works at the Yarn Gallery (he once had to decapitate a sock I was working on because it was so, so wrong.) Any of the folks there would be awesome to learn from, however.
June 17, 2008 at 5:16 am #627011inactiveMemberIt had not dawned on me whether a knitting teacher should or would be a man or a woman. I am wondering if you think I am a man, which would be a fair guess, given the “dood” in my e-name. I am, however, a doodette. The “dood” refers to my 5 1/2 year old, 100 lb. labradoodle.
But, regardless, maybe I should check out Yarn Gallery. Do you know if they teach beginning adults by any chance?
Thanks TVB!
June 17, 2008 at 5:31 am #627012thriftwaygirlParticipantAnyone know of a kind of substance that I can coat seashells with that would make them hard?
I have a collection I am looking to make a mosaic wall plaque with for my garden.
June 17, 2008 at 2:59 pm #627013hopeyParticipant*blink*
Did somebody say labradoodle? I’d love to hear about your doodle! :D I have two Australian multigen labradoodles, chocolate brown, standard size.
June 17, 2008 at 6:16 pm #627014katydidMemberooo boy, do i wanna play…my knitting project is mostly on hold now til the cast is off…but i could kibitz…..i’ve drooled over the blog yarn “thread” descriptions…in the past i’ve potted, weaved, sewn, knitted, drawn and piddled aroun\d in other mediums…also love print layout and design…pls count me in
June 17, 2008 at 7:17 pm #627015JoBParticipanti thinki sense a knit in coming on..
saw a movie about Edith Pilaf last night and there is this incredible scene where she sits on the beach and knits…
i know.. impractical… but cool anyway.
where can we knit.. or chrochet.. or?
Katydid, those who can’t do right now could coach:)
June 17, 2008 at 7:22 pm #627016addParticipantspeaking of knitting, on Saturday we were at the Olympic Sculpture Park and there was a group of about 20 people all picnicking and knitting together! Must have been a group of some kind – it was kinda cool watching all those hands working at the same time.
