Thanks to Tamsen Spengler from the West Seattle Timebank for photos from last night’s West Seattle Outdoor Movies screening of “A Wrinkle in Time.” The Timebank was last night’s spotlight nonprofit – here are Janine and Frances with the banner:

Tamsen reports that their benefit raffle brought in $172. Every week, a different nonprofit is in the spotlight – next Saturday night (August 18th), it’s ArtsWest, and the movie is “Coco,” second-to-last movie of the summer, at dusk outside the West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor), 36th and Snoqualmie. (WSB is the series’ media sponsor.)

SATURDAY: “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” at West Seattle Outdoor Movies https://westseattleblog.com/2018/08/saturday-star-wars-the-last-jedi-at-west-seattle-outdoor-movies/ https://westseattleblog.com/2018/08/saturday-star-wars-the-last-jedi-at-west-seattle-outdoor-movies/#respond Sat, 04 Aug 2018 04:16:38 +0000 https://westseattleblog.com/?p=924484

The second movie in the third “Star Wars” trilogy is on the big screen tomorrow night outside the West Seattle YMCA (3622 SW Snoqualmie; WSB sponsor) in The Triangle. You can watch “The Last Jedi” free at dusk Saturday – it’s the third of this year’s six West Seattle Outdoor Movies! Bring your own chair/blanket and find a spot as early as 6:30; the movie’s at dusk, probably around 9 pm.

This week’s spotlight nonprofit is the West Seattle Food Bank, and if you bring a few dollars for raffle tickets, you’ll be supporting the Y and taking a chance on some cool prizes. Also: West Seattle’s own Sweet Bumpas Ice Cream will be there selling cool treats, in addition to the Y’s weekly concession offerings. We’re this year’s media sponsor – see you at the movies!

West Seattle Outdoor Movies never charge admission – but if you can, bring a few $ for raffle tickets – every week benefits a different nonprofit and brings some cool raffle prizes. Tonight, WestSide Baby is getting the raffle $ and giving away the prizes listed above. We photographed WS Baby’s booth at tonight’s movie outside the West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor) in The Triangle:

WS Baby reps were wit reps from Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Northwest Real Estate (WSB sponsor and tonight’s spotlight sponsor for the movie, “Secret Life of Pets“). Next weekend (August 4th), the Saturday night movie is “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”:

Next week’s spotlight nonprofit is the West Seattle Food Bank. We’ll have other details later in the week – just make plans to be outside the Y (3622 SW Snoqualmie) before the movie starts at dusk!

That’s the trailer for “Secret Life of Pets,” which will be onscreen Saturday night for West Seattle Outdoor Movies‘ week two. The movie’s free as always but if you can – BRING DIAPERS! WestSide Baby is the spotlight nonprofit this week, and it’s the last major event in WS Baby’s Stuff the Bus Diaper Drive, which still needs thousands more diapers to reach this year’s goal.

You also need to bring your own chair/blanket to the WSOM site outside the West Seattle YMCA (3622 SW Snoqualmie; WSB sponsor) BUT if you want to have dinner at the movies this week, you don’t have to bring your own, because the Macho Burgers food truck will be there (as well as the Y’s concession stand). You’re welcome to come stake out your spot as early as 6:30 pm; the movie starts at dusk.

West Seattle Outdoor Movies’ 2018 season opener https://westseattleblog.com/2018/07/happening-now-west-seattle-outdoor-movies-2018-season-opener/ Sun, 22 Jul 2018 05:19:13 +0000 https://westseattleblog.com/?p=923182

About 100 people had already settled in outside the West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor) about an hour before sunset, and right about now are well into “Wonder Woman,” first West Seattle Outdoor Movies feature of the year. At the concession stand, we found someone costumed in the spirit of the movie:

The night’s concession options included popcorn, water, and gummies. Every West Seattle Outdoor Movies event spotlights a nonprofit, and tonight it’s the WS Helpline, with a table just past the screen and $3 raffle tickets for some cool prizes:

Those prizes included a Mountaineers family membership and two tickets to a Seahawks game. Next week’s nonprofit is WestSide Baby – bring diapers! – and the movie is “Secret Life of Pets,” at dusk July 28th. You’re invited to show up as early as 6:30 pm. The Y is at 3622 SW Snoqualmie in The Triangle.

West Seattle Outdoor Movies start Saturday night! https://westseattleblog.com/2018/07/west-seattle-outdoor-movies-start-saturday-night/ https://westseattleblog.com/2018/07/west-seattle-outdoor-movies-start-saturday-night/#comments Sat, 21 Jul 2018 02:58:04 +0000 https://westseattleblog.com/?p=923004

Around this time tomorrow night, the SW Snoqualmie festival street should be filling up for the first West Seattle Outdoor Movies presentation of the summer! “Wonder Woman” is the first of six free Saturday night movies you’ll see outside the West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor) at dusk tomorrow, July 28th, August 4th, August 11th, August 18th, and August 25th. You can come stake out your spot (bring your own chair/blanket) as early as 6:30 pm; the Y provides kid activities and will offer concessions, too, while you wait for the movie, which starts at dusk (time gets earlier as the weeks go on). If you bring a few bucks, you also can buy tickets for the nonprofit-fundraiser raffle – tomorrow night’s spotlighted nonprofit and beneficiary is the West Seattle Helpline. Series co-sponsors include WSB again this year. Here’s the full schedule of movies as announced back in May!

That’s the trailer for “Wonder Woman,” first of this summer’s six West Seattle Outdoor Movies, now less than two weeks away – so it’s the next summer countdown we’re launching! The movies are free, at dusk on six consecutive Saturday nights, outside the West Seattle YMCA (3622 SW Snoqualmie; WSB sponsor) in The Triangle, coordinated by the Y and the West Seattle Junction Association, with sponsors including WSB. In case you missed (or forgot!) this year’s announcement published here back in May, here’s the full slate of movies and dates:

July 21 – Wonder Woman
July 28 – The Secret Life of Pets
August 4 – Star Wars: The Last Jedi
August 11 – A Wrinkle in Time
August 18 – Coco
August 25 – Black Panther

The movies are free; concessions support the Y, and raffles each movie night will support these other local nonprofits:

July 21 – West Seattle Helpline
July 28 – WestSide Baby
August 4 – West Seattle Food Bank
August 11 – West Seattle Timebank
August 18 – ArtsWest
August 25 – WSJA Mural Project

While the movie start time will change as dusk gets earlier, you’re welcome to show up with your chair/blanket as early as 6:30 every time. If you’re bringing the kid(s), the Y plans activities to keep them entertained, and food trucks are expected (schedule to come) if you want to have dinner but don’t feel like bringing a picnic. We’ll see you at the Y, at the movies!

West Seattle Outdoor Movies 2018: Here’s the lineup! https://westseattleblog.com/2018/05/west-seattle-outdoor-movies-2018-heres-the-lineup/ https://westseattleblog.com/2018/05/west-seattle-outdoor-movies-2018-heres-the-lineup/#comments Thu, 24 May 2018 21:43:07 +0000 https://westseattleblog.com/?p=917590

It’s official! The lineup is set for this summer’s slate of six free Saturday night West Seattle Outdoor Movies presented at the West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor) in The Triangle:

July 21 – Wonder Woman
July 28 – The Secret Life of Pets
August 4 – Star Wars: The Last Jedi
August 11 – A Wrinkle in Time
August 18 – Coco
August 25 – Black Panther

Gates open at 6:30 – bring your own chair/blanket(s) to sit on. The movies start at dusk, and of course that time gets earlier as the summer rolls on. Preshow fun includes kids’ activities at the Y (which supports the series, as does the West Seattle Junction Association, with co-sponsors including WSB); food trucks, concessions, and the always-popular nonprofit-benefiting concessions are in the plan for this year too. See you at the movies!

WEST SEATTLE OUTDOOR MOVIES: Help choose the 2018 lineup! Sponsors sought, too https://westseattleblog.com/2018/04/west-seattle-outdoor-movies-help-choose-the-2018-lineup-sponsors-sought-too/ https://westseattleblog.com/2018/04/west-seattle-outdoor-movies-help-choose-the-2018-lineup-sponsors-sought-too/#comments Mon, 30 Apr 2018 20:53:52 +0000 https://westseattleblog.com/?p=915350 (WSB photo, August 2017)

Another one of the fun events getting ever-closer is the West Seattle Outdoor Movies series, presented by the West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor) with the West Seattle Junction Association in the “festival street” outside the Y. Every year, WSB readers help determine the lineup; this year, the YMCA and WSJA have pre-vetted a list of 9 movies from which they hope to present 6 favorites, so you’re invited to speak up for one you really want to see, or which six you would pick, or even rank all nine in your order of preference:

• Coco
• Jumanji
• Black Panther
• Wonder Woman
• Star Wars: Last Jedi
• Paddington 2
• A Wrinkle In Time
• Peter Rabbit
• Secret Life of Pets

The series runs six consecutive Saturday nights, starting July 21st. Please post your vote/ranking/etc.in the comment section below!

P.S. Whether or not you want to offer an opinion on the movies, here’s another way to be part of WSOM – sponsorship! We’re already in again this year as media sponsor. But lots of support is needed – renting popular movies for public screenings gets more expensive every year! There are a variety of sponsorship levels (see them here) – as WSJA’s Lora Swift puts it, ways to “power up.” Whichever level you choose, you can sign up and pay here.

P.P.S. Almost forgot to include the link to last year’s lineup!

We stopped by the SW Snoqualmie festival street next to the West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor) in The Triangle just before sunset, as people gathered for the final West Seattle Outdoor Movies show of summer 2017, “Beauty and the Beast.” We even found these characters:

This was the first full season at the new location of the free movie series, presented by the Y and the West Seattle Junction Association, with community business and organization sponsors including WSB.

(WSB photo, April 2014)

Our photo is from April 2014, when we covered chess champion Phiona Mutesi visiting West Seattle Elementary School, more than 8,000 miles from her hometown in Uganda. She visited students learning to play chess, and spoke at an assembly. Since then, Phiona’s true story has become the subject of a movie, “Queen of Katwe,” which you can see Saturday night at West Seattle Outdoor Movies in The Triangle. Here’s the trailer:

This week’s movie is presented by the West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor), which is right next to the 36th/Snoqualmie “festival street” where the movies are shown, and the West Seattle Junction Association. Bring your own chair/blanket – you can show up as early as 6:30 pm and enjoy the evening in the street. This week’s food truck is BC Zhang, with “Chinese fast food.” Concessions are sold too, and the movie’s free! It starts at dusk, which this week is expected to be between 8:15 and 8:30.

With stormtroopers and trivia, here’s how West Seattle Outdoor Movies’ 2017 season began https://westseattleblog.com/2017/07/happening-now-west-seattle-outdoor-movies-2017-season-begins/ https://westseattleblog.com/2017/07/happening-now-west-seattle-outdoor-movies-2017-season-begins/#comments Sun, 23 Jul 2017 02:33:48 +0000 https://westseattleblog.com/?p=889573

7:35 PM: Stormtroopers, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, School of Rock musicians, the Macho Burgers food truck, and early-arrival moviegoers are already gathered in and along the SW Snoqualmie festival street west of 36th SW [map], for the first night of this year’s West Seattle Outdoor Movies series. “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is tonight’s movie. (Added – SOR started playing and a stormtrooper dance ensued:)

This is the first full season that the West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor) is hosting the series, which now has more room and more opportunities for preshow fun. There’s still time for you to get here – after some preshow music, we’re gearing up for “Star Wars” trivia, hosted by co-publisher Patrick, and the movie itself is still an hour and a half or so away. It’s a little breezy here in the shade so we’d recommend bringing a sweater. And definitely bring your own chair(s) and/or blanket to sit on. The movie’s free; in addition to the food truck availability, the Y is selling concessions, and cool prizes will be raffled to raise money for local nonprofits.

8:56 PM: Movie time is getting closer. People are still arriving; still room toward the back of the sloped seating area facing the inflatable screen (which is being tested right now – not dark enough to start the movie yet). Definitely sweater/blanket weather, at least in your editor’s opinion. The “Star Wars” trivia game is in the final moments. Meantime, another scene from the Garrison Titan visit earlier – some of the visitors posing with the Y’s new leader Shalimar Gonzales:

Next week, it’s the LEGO Batman Movie. During the week, we’ll have a preview with even more details such as preshow activities, food-truck plans, etc.

PREVIEW: ‘Rogue One’ launches West Seattle Outdoor Movies this Saturday, with light sabers, stormtroopers, food truck… https://westseattleblog.com/2017/07/preview-rogue-one-launches-west-seattle-outdoor-movies-this-saturday-with-light-sabers-stormtroopers-food-truck/ https://westseattleblog.com/2017/07/preview-rogue-one-launches-west-seattle-outdoor-movies-this-saturday-with-light-sabers-stormtroopers-food-truck/#comments Thu, 20 Jul 2017 19:57:19 +0000 https://westseattleblog.com/?p=889355

That may look like an ordinary street – but Saturday evening, SW Snoqualmie just south of 36th SW [map], next to the West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor), will transform into its secret identity as a “Festival Street” for the first West Seattle Outdoor Movies event of the season – the first full season in this new location.

The movie: “Rogue One,” which made history as the first standalone “Star Wars Story” movie outside the trilogies.

The time: You can arrive as early as 6:30 pm. From the official WSOM website:

•First 50 kids (or all those young at heart) will get light sabers.
•7-8 pm, bust out your cameras for those stormtrooper selfies (Garrison Titan will be here)
•Food truck for the night: Macho Burgers (vegetarian, gluten-free options available)

Live performances by School of Rock West Seattle.

Star Wars quiz by our own West Seattle ‘Mean Old Man’ with a Jedi Jeopardy lighting round.

Concessions and raffles too; all proceeds go to charity. This week’s raffle proceeds will benefit WestSide Baby, West Seattle Food Bank, White Center Food Bank, and West Seattle Helpline.

Sponsored by ActivSpace In West Seattle, Elliott Bay Brewing Company, LaVida Massage of West Seattle, School of Rock WS, West Seattle Christian Church, West Seattle Farmers Market, and West Seattle Blog

Brought to you by the West Seattle Junction Association and West Seattle & Fauntleroy YMCA.

The movie starts at dusk – we can safely say that’ll be after 9 pm. But with all the aforementioned excitement, you won’t want to arrive at the last minute anyway. This is the first of the season’s six movies, every Saturday night through August 26th; see the lineup on the WSOM website.
