Same tired old people on here griping about the world, but I like to pop in occasionally to see if the insanity continues (it does).

Just wanted to reply to the original poster and to others that have been around since the Stone Age. I’m glad that Herman Cain is starting to get traction. I was ahead of the curve many months ago and still support him.

EVERYONE SHOULD OPPOSE THIS TAB FEE. It is simply another way to tax drivers unnecessarily. Hooper1961 is correct that this money will be squandered and if you want proof of how government wastes our money, I could inundate your inbox.

Even if you don’t own a car, you’ll be impacted. Taxi cabs, tow trucks, etc have to purchase tabs. Companies don’t eat costs, they pass the cost onto their customers by charging more (same concept on property tax increases).

Here is the latest and greatest, though.

@SarahScoot, thank you. You seem to be one of the more intelligent posters.

Let’s consider a few things, first and they I’ll address your questions.

    1) I posted this in RANTS. I wasn’t attempting to open this to debate. Like I said, if I wanted to debate the topic, I would have posted a question. I will explain what I saw, but don’t need to justify it on a rant forum.

    2) The people assuming that these people are “needy” in some fashion are doing the same thing I did (assume), but worse. They didn’t observe the couple, their actions or what they were purchasing. I did. The fact that people are assuming without any information at all is worse than my original rant. Without all of us digging into their financial situation, we’ll never know with 100% certainty. Note that I never attacked ALL people using EBT cards, only the ones that I saw that were abusers. Everyone put words in my mouth so to speak.

    3) These people were dressed like thugs (more like gang members), purchased non necessary items, had wads of cash in their hands, were making alcohol purchases (not with EBT) and generally acted and spoke like they were lifelong members of the government benefits program. Yes, I am making multiple assumptions but after my observations working in grocery stores I am well aware that abuse goes on.

    4) My worldview is that people should only use these benefits in extreme situations and should be working to remove themselves from that program as quickly as possible. In addition, if you need to receive benefits from the government you should be required to only buy the basics for sustenance and positive nutritional value. You should not be allowed to purchase anything non-essential. You are not entitled to use these benefits unless you have exhausted all other viable options. The worldview that many of the posters above appears to be one of entitlement. Their comments make it seem like it is a benefit of living in the United States and that as many people as possible should take advantage of it.

    5) You state that I should not make judgements unless I know the entire situation. If we’re in a court of law, you’re right. But we’re not. I observed and inferred. Plain & simple. Many of the posters after me, did the same damn thing with me. No big deal unless you call me an a-hole or compare me to a child abuser.

    6) My rant has nothing to do with Wall Street, corporate corruption or the price of oranges. Why bring this into the conversation at all? Do two wrongs make a right? No, they don’t but this thread if rife with that philosophy and double standards.

    7) I was a very poor college student putting my way through college. I worked in multiple positions in two grocery stores while I was in college. I saw people abuse food stamps and then EBT cards on a daily basis. IT DOES HAPPEN MORE THAN YOU THINK. I thought about the people purchasing steaks and lobsters with food stamps while I was making $7.50 per hour working and not using food stamps. I thought about them long & hard when I was eating my 99 cent can of soup for dinner. I think about them now as well. I also think about how lazy our society has gotten and it’s pathetic.

There is greed at the top of major corporations, but there is also greed in your own backyard. Neither one is good and one isn’t worse than the other.

If you want to discuss further, I will make myself available at any local bar to discuss in depth.

Oh, and JoB – I am willing to say plenty to your face. I met you 1, possibly 2 times about 3 years ago. It’s been a long time, baby and I have plenty to say to you. I just haven’t run into you. But it’s good to know you’re a fan of the other site! ;)

Wow, man. You people are beyond insane.

So, I posted an opinionated rant? I didn’t post it about any of you and here you go literally attacking me.

I wonder if any of you DBs would say any of this to my face where you don’t hide behind the shroud of WSB? If you would, I’d gladly debate you in person.

This whole troll bit is a cop out. If I was looking to stir the pot, I would have started a topic under politics or general talk. I was simply pissed off at seeing 2 people abuse the system. I even stated above that I don’t have an issue with EBT for people that NEED it, but your minds are too damn clouded with HATE to even read that.

Anything I post here, I’d gladly say to your face. Especially things like cry baby and stating that I’m attacking the weak like an abusive parent. SERIOUSLY???

If you don’t like what I say, do what I’ve done to all of you the past year….DON’T SAY ANYTHING.

    Simply amazing.

I stopped pounding my head into brick walls about a year ago, so I won’t continue the debate. I appreciate being able to post my rant as many of you are allowed to do so on WSB.

I also hope to see Bonnie & Rarelyever reprimanded for making personal attacks against me, which does violate this sites rules.

This topic is something that has always made me upset (dates back to when I worked in a grocery store) and I simply shared my feelings. If you don’t like it, tough. I have the right to my opinion the same as you and I posted it in the correct spot.

@Gina – They are Electronic Benefit Cards, typically known as “food stamps”.

@RarelyEver – You may disagree, but I posted this under Rants and you aren’t obligated to respond if you disagree. So, who’s a “troll” now? Besides, the term “troll” is a subjective term that certain people like to use to vilify someone. Pointless in a discussion.

@JanS – no violation here. This is like complaining about speeders on Admiral or 35th (which is done at least every other week).

I am not critical of people who legitimately need EBT benefits, but the people that I saw (and by the way, I worked in grocery stores for 8 years) do not fall under this classification. They fall under the classification of abusers.

And yes, I do feel that people on food stamps should be thanking the rest of us. After what I witnessed in my grocery days, many of you hopefully would be appalled of what goes on out there. I have stood behind multiple people in lines using EBT cards to pay for steak, lobsters, crabs, etc while I was behind them purchasing a can of soup for dinner (mind you, I was employed and working).

When government is looking for ways to save $$$, I would hope that one thing being looked at is the abuse in that system.

    @Jiggers, long time no chat.

I’m a District Manager for Sprint. If you want to contact me, you can find me on Twitter (@WSTheHouse). I’ll DM you my e-mail on there.

@Lucky Chick, I don’t know why you’d state that we have “deceptive sales methods”, but I’d be glad to hear more if you contact me.

You’ll find Sprint to pretty darn hard to beat from a pricing standpoint and we’ve got solid coverage all around Western WA.

in reply to: What is it about Westwood area that people don't like? #700427

I had to chime in on this since I live in Westwood.

First off, I can rattle off approximately a dozen murders and bank robberies that have occurred in the Junction and Admiral areas in the past 7 years that I’ve lived in Westwood. Many more than I’ve ever heard in Westwood (and we have plenty of businesses here).

Second, in the one of two issues that I’ve come across in the past 7 years they have been related to either homeless people (it was a stalking issue with a neighbors kid) or teenagers. Both of these “classes” are found throughout any major metropolitan area and are simply par for the course in big cities.

Third, I am within walking distance to QFC, Target, Barnes & Noble, approximately 4 parks (only 1.1 miles from Lincoln Park), a community center, a public library, a fresh fruit stand, a liquor store, one of the best pizza places in WS (Gianonni’s), Eats Cafe, a ferry dock, a YMCA, a Sports Complex, a public High School, Middle and Elementary School, a Post Office, a great little coffee shop (Bird On A Wire) and am still pretty damn close to The Junction.

Fourth, you could live near me!

There is nothing wrong with Westwood and it is a great little community! Personally, I think it’s a great little place to call home.

I was affected last night on my evening commute. It took me almost 3 hours to drive from Union Street in Downtown Seattle to my house in WS yesterday afternoon. Although I had no idea what was going on at the time, I came home to find out that 23 people illegally were blocking 2nd Avenue. The ironic thing is that they were doing something illegally to support others that have entered the country illegally.

I was effected, not by their cause but by their actions.

In addition, Seattle Police Department handled the situation poorly. They allowed the issue to fester for hours and didn’t even make an effort to expedite traffic on parallel streets. A fantastic blunder by Seattle PD.

    And of course, Big Al’s!

Interesting how a “personal attack” from Cait on me has been allowed to stay up on this site for 18 hours (post #32) and I even reported it (the first time ever).

And there aren’t any double standards on this site? Ha!

JoB, you stated “Afro American”, that is offensive. “African American” is not.

Cait, I know the admins of this site are just waiting for me to verbally abuse you but I won’t. We’ll just see if the same rules apply to you and your crew that apply to me. Feel free to post your e-mail address so that I can tell you how alienated I am and you can tell me how you’ll help me.

Cait, it does celebrate a race. According to every website devoted to Kwanza it states it is an African American holiday.

And I definitely don’t feel alienated. I’ll take that as your way of checking out and conceding this debate.

JoB, if you actually understood race you would understand how offensive referring to a black person as “Afro-Amercian” really was.

    But you don’t.

And you still haven’t named another holiday that celebrates another race. There is a difference between celebrations that come from other countries and celebrating a race.

Research the two celebrations you just mentioned. You’ll learn alot, including how they don’t celebrate a race.

St. Patricks Days has been whored out like many other holidays (Christmas included) to celebrate something other than what it was originally intended to celebrate. It is supposed to be a celebration of Saint Patrick, not drinking green beer.

Job states: “you have to look no further than green beer to find a holiday that celebrates a single race… and that is just the short list. So, what makes Kwanza racist?”

TheHouse retorts: “Irish isn’t a race, it’s describing someone from Ireland or of Irish decent. To answer your question about what makes Kwanza racist, all you have to do is ask yourself this:

Would a holiday celebrating Caucasian Americans be considered racist? If your answer if yes, then you’ve answered your own question. If you answered no, then you’re a liar.”

You still haven’t come up with another holiday that celebrates a race besides Kwanza.

Doesn’t it suck when I’m right?

I’m going to start my own new holiday that is a year long celebration called “Dontbeadroidmas”. It will celebrate pillars like: Think For Yourself, Don’t Be A Victim, You Are Human & Supposed To Be Intelligent and many other pillars of anti-liberal thought.

Let me approach this from a different angle:

    1) I don’t care what you want to celebrate. It’s one of the liberties we all have being American.

    2) The two major holidays this time of year are Christmas and Hanukkah, both RELIGIOUS holidays. Kwanza is accurately reported in Post #1 as “a unique African American celebration with focus on the traditional African values of family, community responsibility, commerce, and self-improvement”. That means that Kwanza cannot be readily lumped in as an equivalent to Christmas and Hanukkah since it is not a RELIGIOUS holiday. Instead it celebrates a race and on every website it specifically states it is an “African American” celebration. Plain and simple, that is racist (that’s not even considering it’s roots and the 1960s movement that started it).

From a religious standpoint 90% of Africa follows either Christianity (they would celebrate Christmas) or Islam (they would follow the 5 Pillars).

From a racial standpoint, are there any other holidays that single out a specific race?

From a heritage standpoint, do we have any other holidays centered around “Insert your heritage here – Americans” (example Irish-Americans, Chinese-Americans, Italian-Americans, Russian-Americans or best of all, American Indians)?

I’m all for celebrating some of the points mentioned in Post #4, but at least make it so that everyone feels like they are part of it and use words that everyone can pronounce).

Oh and thanks for the laugh about Santa Claus being invented by Coke. I guess dreidels were invented by Manischewitz.

Kbear, you’re right other states do allow liquor sales in supermarkets or allow public owned liquor stores (allows many more to exist). IMO, these are better options b/c then it spreads out the demand. People don’t have only 1 or 2 choices of places to purchase.

As for The Junction, there aren’t nearly as many issues as there are at WC but if WC is slated to close guess which store will be the closest to them?

FullTilt, what you’re saying makes sense but there are enough peeps hanging around the liquor store in WC to conclude that at least some of them are utilizing it.

You’re all entitled to your opinion, but I do not see a positive/neutral impact on WV. I would prefer for it not to open in WV.

As much as I am against President Obamas platform and the majority of his policies so far, even I have to say this is a harmless speech and don’t see what the uproar is about.

I read the speech several days ago as soon as it was posted on the White Houses website and found it to be void of politics (as it should be).

Don’t take your eye off the ball folks, this speech is not what’s dangerous. It’s his policies related to your personal freedoms (like healthcare) that you need to be worried about.
