redblackParticipanti say we absorb fedex and UPS into the USPS and unionize the entire work force. fedex and UPS are too inefficient, and too expensive.
that, or we shift all of that third-class bulk mail crap to fedex.
kootch, you’re wrong about the USPS wanting to carry that crap. they are forced to carry it, because the junk mail lobby and their lawyers have asserted that advertising is speech, and the courts have agreed.
go after those idiots and leave the post office alone. it’s the advertisers and the paper industry that are holding back technology, not the post office.
btw, kootch, pay all of your paper bills over the internet, do you? you don’t ever drop anything in that mail box? ever? come on, now. be honest. send out pay checks? receive your vehicle tabs?
there’s still a lot that you can’t do with the internet that’s too inconsequential for fedex or UPS.

sydneyMemberKootch: It occurs to me that businesses would be able to find multilingual professors and high level engineers if we hadn’t dumbed down our education because it was viewed as too expensive, too liberal…
You are truly blinded by the right.

dawsonctParticipantI get a kick out of you using Germany as a model of financial stability Kootch. There IS a reason for that, but YOU guys call it SOCIALISM!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFqHyCoypfM
—
But yeah, you are correct, if we protected our citizens as well as Germany does, it would work for us also. Cradle to grave health care, mandated vacations, excellent public schools through PH.D. level, strong support for labor, continuing investment in infrastructural maintenance and upgrades, etc., etc.
Freudian slip? Are you a closeted progressive Kootch? You can come out to us, you know.
September 12, 2011 at 10:46 pm #734002
kootchmanMemberredblack.. they are unionized…both FedEx and UPS…. I have no problem with union organizing.. as long as we don’t put a thumb on the scale. Germany does well, because… gosh.. it has an educated population. The bulk of our unemployment, no surprise is HS dropouts.. college grads are 4.8. It’s hard to be the 28th.. least/most educated country in the industrialized world… but we will see… the Euro story is unfolding. Tabs… internet, pick up at license office… pay all bills internet? yes… never use the mail box for outgoing.. nope .. redblack … I have been in the Post Office twice in this year. Well JanS.. don’t know.. but whatever it is for the very few that do use such services… it’s too much. You keep compounding the problem… a little wasste her.. fine… some more over here… pretty soon deficits and a sucking draw of hard to come by capital… into wasted capital. Yep the wars cost a lot…they aren’t my favorite stimulus package either. redblack. I didn’t say roll USPS into FedEx or UPS… keep em private… then they won’t have to carry junk mail… one thing is for sure they would charge enough to cover their costs.
September 12, 2011 at 11:28 pm #734003
JanSParticipantBS…everyone that I know who is unemployed is highly skilled, came from terrific well paying jobs that simply down sized…
September 12, 2011 at 11:32 pm #734004
JanSParticipantyou see…I like being the thorn in your side…you say drop USPS, use the internet, use FedEx and UPS. I ask if the service for UPS and FedEx will be comparable, and you can’t answer. Not all of us can afford the high prices, and not everyone has the internet. What do you tell them? Tough Sh*t? Too bad for you? And if you think they won;t carry junk mail just because they’re private, think again…money talks, and if those junk mailers pay, they’ll carry it. You do NOT have all the answers…only like making more problems. The way of a lot of Repubs…create problems, offer no solutions.
September 13, 2011 at 12:06 am #734005
jamminjMember“You do NOT have all the answers”
doesn’t take one long to realize he can’t/won’t answer the real questions. He brings up discussions, goes on 500 word rants… and really just says the same thing over and over. but when confronted with a discussion, he ignores the questions he can’t answer, or goes past his belief system.
Also, if you follow his posts… it goes in time with the exact talking points from fox news, week by week. Basically you can guess his next rant from watching fox news.

waynsterParticipantWith Kman its all big business privatize everything he says unions…… kman would sell out unions. See he lives in this would of tea baggers rags on everything government very anti-government just read his 500 word posts. You see I do believe he lives fox news 24/7 and he would vote for glenn beck for pres if he was running. What I wonder is would he support his right wingers if they wanted to suppress freedom of religon like some have come out in favor of. He is not for union wage jobs…. hates Obamas plan for jobs…. would repeal the healthcare law even if it benefited him and no where has he said he is happy…….and you know this is why we all read what he says. Hey to be honest I would sit down and have a drink with him anytime and talk…..anything but politics…. lmao
September 13, 2011 at 12:49 am #734007
jamminjMember“rags on everything government very anti-government”
except big military govt spending. somehow our BIGGEST expenditure goes under his radar. We spend billions monthly on our military, but its the USPS that is the problem.
September 13, 2011 at 12:54 am #734008
waynsterParticipantTrue he leaves out military spending… Kman would you privatize our military too?
September 13, 2011 at 7:19 am #734009
kootchmanMemberYea Jan ya do…. good grief if there was so much 1st class mail demand… it wouldn’t lose money. The question to ask is how much will they have to charge to break even. Who doesn’t have internet access? Gimme a break. Would I privatize the military… no. I sorta like my admirals and generals kept in the barracks. No the military is not cost effective… few government monopolies are… but I prefer civilian control … in this case. Bullshit eh JanS… we have discussed this ‘who ya know” thing before…. but heck lets look at the numbers….
http://www.marketobservation.com/blogs/index.php/2011/07/06/ff-1?blog=10 Bureau of Labor statistics….
September 13, 2011 at 7:37 am #734010
kootchmanMemberLet’s do it this way Jan…. internet access computer hookup…. 10 billion dollars divided by five hundred bucks? One time charge and sunset USPS? Little public WiFi access … instead of investing in THAT…? ok then…
September 13, 2011 at 8:59 am #734011
JanSParticipantmy parents don’t have internet access..they are both partially blind, can’t read the small print. They are 86 and 87…and use USPS all the time. I’m betting there are others, too. Appalachia…ever heard of it? They don’t have internet. Use your head, guy, and look at reality. Not everyone has internet access, or even wants it. You gonna buy them the computer and pay the monthly bill? You gonna install the lines so they can use it?
and…you still haven’t answered my question about Fed Ex and UPS ;->
September 13, 2011 at 1:14 pm #734012
redblackParticipantyeah, kootch. you gonna force americans to buy computers? isn’t that – like – a mandate, or something? and the USPS will still deliver to “general mail,” ferchrissakes. try doing that with the internet. or fedex.
i use that mailbox almost daily. it’s rare days when i get nothing but junk mail.
September 13, 2011 at 2:51 pm #734013
jamminjMember” Who doesn’t have internet access? Gimme a break.”
shows the unreal world that kootch lives in.
September 13, 2011 at 2:52 pm #734014
jamminjMember“Would I privatize the military… no.”
Would I privatize the USPS… no. there, problem solved.
September 13, 2011 at 6:24 pm #734015
dawsonctParticipantMilitary jobs are already being privatized Kootch, to the GREAT EXPENSE of the American people. Have you ever heard of Haliburton? Blackwater/Xi? They are doing work, at HUGELY increased expense to you, me, 98% of American citizens, that was not too long ago performed by American soldiers.
They are doing the work at substandard levels (who do you think provides the people who inspect their work?) and charging us far more than it would cost if a soldier was still performing those duties.

Is every aspect of American life simply another avenue for a wealthy and well-connected power elite to turn a profit? I don’t think that was the Original Intent.
September 14, 2011 at 1:52 am #734016
kootchmanMemberWe could bring back the draft. I know Appalachia better than most… 98 per cent of all American homes have television… percentage of cell phones, home phones..if they have that, they have internet access. I didn’t mandate computers.. but it would be cheaper by far to GIVE away to 2 million folks a desktop.. cheaper if ya use cell phone access…than to prop up USPS….. etc… that’s a problem..bty way Jam if your parents can’t read… why would they need first class mail? When this country needs transformation… in every way… we spend money propping up the old, and obsolete because thetr is a voting constituency behind it…. We have HUGE deficits.. it’s about making wise, measured decisions… not everything for everyone price be damned. It is the wealthy well connected power elite who are propping up the Post Office… congress. As far as I can tell… those delegates at Constitution Hall?.. they all looked as wealthy and well connected as it gets… property rights and very limited government was I suspect the very “Original” intent at the beginning.
September 14, 2011 at 6:43 am #734017
JanSParticipantwow, Kman, is there nothing that you don’t know better than most?
September 14, 2011 at 6:46 am #734018
JanSParticipantKman…just answered my question. My mother is 80% blind, my dad blind in one eye. There are machines provided to them by the Commonwealth of PA that magnifies reading material, like letters, cards, newspapers, books…so, there you go…something you didn’t know…
September 14, 2011 at 10:46 am #734019
jamminjMember“it’s about making wise, measured decisions…”
like 500billion monthly in the mid east??? you want to attack the middle class, and services that benefit them the most… yet when it comes to the governments biggest expenditure, by far – you are silent.
JanS, if its not in kootch realm of reality… it doesn’t exist.
September 14, 2011 at 10:48 am #734020
kootchmanMemberSo does your computer… it magnifies font as large as you want… check your operating system… heck you can even have a program to read it yo you. I didn’t say privatize the USPS.. I said kill it. Yea jamminj.. we got it.. you don;t like military spending. Bring back the draft… it at least assured us the protections of a heterogenous mix of personalities… the “all volunteer” force is essentially hand picked by generals for generals. As a good friend once said… smart enough to use the weapons, not critical enough to ask if they should. You know damn well if the ranks were full of liberal sons and daughters, and connected conservatives…. this war would have lasted max two years. I saw the spectacle after Obama got Bin Laden… all those cheery, “USA. USA USA” chanting kiddies.. easy to do when ya have no skin in the game. Think about it… recruitment is geared to those most likely not to make the boat rock. Nothing puckered a Battalion Commander worse than a Congressional Inquiry forwarded down from DoD… every general. col. on down got a “fix this quick” after a solder went outside the chain of command… (which they are allowed to do) or mom and dad get in contact with their congressperson.
September 14, 2011 at 3:41 pm #734021
jamminjMember“Yea jamminj.. we got it.. you don;t like military spending.”
no, like you I don’t like the unnecessary spending. just don’t like your misplaced outrage, thats all.
We spend more on military expenditure than the next 6 countries combined. And coming from 3 generations of military service, I appreciate the military. But we have over reached and over played our hand in the international world. Time to cut back. It didn’t take a war to get bin laden, it took intelligence and some brave seals to get the job done. We are going to spend upwards of a trillion dollars to have learned that lesson.
And I continue to bring up the mid east because if we didn’t squander our wealth to those countries we would not need to have these discussions on cutting services and benefits to the middle class. We spent our wealth building iraqis infrastructure, but balk when we want to do the same with ours???? wtf is wrong with you! is what I have to say to that.
The USPS is NOT going away, no matter how much whining you do. So instead of going on for pages and pages on incessant whining, how about a discussion on fixing problems instead of a knee jerk reaction to just yank any benefit away.
For 8 years we heard that there is no limit on what we should spend overseas, none. NOW that we want to spend money on US citizens, wether its social security, medicare or the USPS – we are confronted with Americans like you who feel that it is a waste to boost up the middle class, at the same time we are expected to boost up the upper class who are doing fine.
Its time to stop attacking the middle and working class, and wanting to yank away the USPS and force them to use a higher paying service. Don’t want to pay the tax, but no problem from you by forcing everyone to pay more to corporations, again.
September 14, 2011 at 4:37 pm #734022
DBPMemberBack to the original topic . . .
I agree with jj that the post office is not going away. However, it is likely to change significantly over the next decade, and I think what we’re hearing from Congress are merely the opening salvos of a battle to determine just how drastic that change will be.
Right now, the Post Office isn’t that far from breaking even in terms of operating costs. With a few more tweaks it could even become profitable. However, there remains the systemic problem of how to fund future obligations and non-operational costs.
According to an informative AP story on The Huffington Post:
The Postal Service, which does not receive tax money for its operations, is not seeking federal funds.
Instead, postal officials want changes in the way they operate, including relief from the requirement that it prefund medical costs. No other federal agency has to prefund retiree health benefits, but because of the way the federal budget is organized the money counts as income to the government, so eliminating it would make the federal deficit appear larger.
Article:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/huff-wires/20110906/us-postal-problems/
Again, look for things to change at the Postal Service over the next decade. Benefits and pay for employees will probably decline, union bargaining power will erode, postage rates will increase . . .
The latest round of squawking is really just about softening us up for these changes. That’s all.
September 14, 2011 at 4:43 pm #734023
JanSParticipant“The Postal Service, which does not receive tax money for its operations, is not seeking federal funds.”
So…no tax money involved..what’s your beef again, Kman?
