JiggersMemberHow many times when I go to a place for coffee or something you’re not getting a good connection. Anyone else have issues with businesses that have shotty wireless service? The counter workers get all huffy when I ask them to check or reboot their system. It’s like pulling teeth. One word to businesses who aren’t wi-fi user friendly when they advertise it, I am going to post your business’s name if I experience any more issues with your service. I pay for your crappy coffee and donuts and expect to be able to use it. Don’t bamboozle me because word of mouth is dangerous. If you don’t want people sitting around on their laptops, don’t get it.

bluebirdMemberHave you considered it being a problem with your wi-fi card, not the service? I don’t have any issues.

JiggersMemberWhat card? I don’t have a card. I just go into an establishment that advertises wi-fi, buy their crappy $2.00 cup of dirt water and pray their service doesn’t crap out on me while I’m in the middle of an email.

KBearParticipantIf you have no wi-fi card, that could explain why you can’t receive a signal.

JiggersMemberWhat are u talking about a card? I can go into Seattle’s Best and just hook up into their network for free.

KBearParticipantNot a membership card, a PC card in your laptop. If it’s faulty, it may appear to you that the signal is weak.

WSBKeymasterWe don’t always have to use business/facility wi-fi because we have an aircard but when we do, I’ve actually been surprised at how far wireless reaches. More than a few times, we have been working in The Junction (at Summer Fest last year, at meetings in various places) and have picked up wireless from places across the street from wherever we happened to be.
But the signal quality definitely varies.
Re: a card, it’s only been a few years since laptops required external cards – when we started doing news after the 2006 power outage, we got one for the first time, to increase the # of places we could go hang out. That was a few laptops ago! Now as far as I can tell they’re all built-in. But definitely the internal workings can start fuzzing out. One of our older laptops won’t pick up wi-fi any more.

dhgParticipantThinkpads have really good built-in wifi chips and antennas. The engineers took enough care that Lenovo offers some tests that show they have a range about 50% greater than other boxes.
I also recommend you try the wifi at C&P. First, you won’t pay for a cup of dirt, it is quite good, and second the router is in the public room so you can reboot it yourself if necessary without an employee making a face.

TheHouseMemberPlease do not personally insult Wi-Fi. If you have an issue with Wi-Fi, please e-mail him/her directly at wi-fi-@wifi.com
Thank you.

KenParticipantI have several types of laptop wi-f internal cards if you need it replaced.
Most modern laptops have really good reception. The windows software used to manage connections can get pretty useless if you use a lot of wi-fi connections. Sometimes it will drop a close connection and try to connect to a distant one but not give you any indication that it is doing so.
Sometimes purging old connections will make it more responsive.
