JKBParticipantHow many of you have to admit that your eyes aren’t what they once were?
I’m looking at a restaurant menu with labels in pale red on a parchment background, in italics with the lights dimmed. Can’t make the letters out at all.
I finally ordered ‘enchiladas mole and a house margarita’ on the assumption they’d have it.

seaopgalParticipantIt’s not just you! It is I … as well as poor menu design. I’ve been known to get up and walk over to the bar, the window, or the hostess station. (Hope the mole was good …)

JKBParticipantThe mole was poor. I should have tried the gopher.
Best silly suggestion: take a picture, and view it zoomed in. I forgot that I’m carrying a flashlight, and a magnifying glass.

newnativeParticipantI have to wear my cheaters all the time. In a very short time, within two years I went from occasional blurriness to constant unable to read anything in arm’s reach. Some restaurants (Ma’kaono) keep loaner cheaters for menu reading. I remember when my dad was in his 40’s and he would make a monocle out of his thumb and index finger to read print.

PangolinPieParticipantYep, that’s me, in any dark restaurant. Someone clued me in to a fantastic phone app: it uses your camera and its flash to light up and magnify the page you’re looking at, in real time. I love it. God, I feel old…

GAnativeParticipantMy husband and I went to a restaurant on the Eastside where the menu was black ink on dark brown paper. Who thought that was a good idea? Everyone in the place had their phone out trying to read.

cherableParticipantI can see a flea on top of a highrise but I can’t read most menus worth a darn! At a junction pizza restaurant last year I asked the waitress for help and she brought me a flashlight!!! It is now my favorite restaurant :-)

jissyParticipantPangolin: Please do tell that app? I feel the need for it coming on within days.

WhaleParticipantCall me next time you are out and are experiencing this problem! I’ll come help if i am able!

JanSParticipantjissy…do you have a smartphone? They usually come with a flashlight app of some sort…I have 2 different ones. Just go to your app store and input “flashlight”

berthaParticipantJissy – I think the app Pangolin is referring to is called Mag. Light.
August 15, 2016 at 8:48 am #854510
PangolinPieParticipantYes, thanks, bertha! That’s the app. It’s better than just using the flashlight because it also magnifies what’s on the screen of your phone, and lets you zoom in if needed.
