someone decided it was a good idea to put tile directly over the original fir floors in our kitchen. They didn’t level it and now the tiles are all cracking.

Anyone have any rec’s for someone that can remove the tiles and sand down the glue or mortar, whatever they used so that we can either have them (or us) lay down new tile or wood laminate?

I would start with WSB Sponsor Ventana.

I’ve seen the results of one of their remodels, and they do beautiful, quality work.

They are also very community oriented.

N-Compass Construction Drew and Stefan do a lot of different jobs and they might be able to help.

Hmmm, Ventana gave a very expensive (albeit I’m sure great work) quote and for something as simple as pulling up old tile and essentially sanding off the mortar, seems like it might be too small a job for them.

So you need to remove the tiles that might run under your kitchen cabinets, get rid of the mortar, lay down a tile underlayment, put new tiles down, grout them, then install a transition between your new tile floor and the old floor. All while not making a mess of your house with all the dust that’s going to be created. I’m not sure how much Ventana quoted but it’s probably worth it.

It was a quote for something else but it was way out of the ballpark compared to who we hired to have it done.

That being said, if I had the time, I could easily to this myself but again, no time. There is no tile under my cabinets and if you have it under yours, yikes!

Just scrape up old tile and sand off mortar, pretty much it.
