kejacoMemberMy teenage daughter just got her learners permit and we are new to the area. Does anyone know of any good places to teach a teenager to drive? I’m looking for someplace like a large parking lot or something with lots of room.

CaitParticipantWhen I learned how to drive my Dad taught me at the Southcenter Mall parking lot in the evening on a weeknight. There are still some remote parts of the lot that clear out after the 5pm hour.
Jack Block Park was also another place that was good for learning.

HormelParticipantI used the parking lot just north of Nicklesville for teaching my daughter. SSCC has a big lot as well.

maplesyrupParticipantI took my son to the West Seattle High parking lot on a week night for parking practice.
For road practice I bet Vashon would be a good choice.

trickycooljParticipantMy dad took me to a near by junior high to drive in reverse in circles around the parking lot because I was having trouble in drivers Ed passing the backing around a corner drive. Certainly helped me get a feel for steering backwards!!
He also took me out on the freeway literally on my second drive ever (this was before the backing practice). He decided I would have an easier time driving straight at a higher rate of speed… I drove from Lakewood to the Tutle River rest area by the turn off to Mt St Helen’s. We decided to drive to Portland to go to Frys (before we had one here). I’m not going to endorse throwing a 15 year old on the freeway on drive 2, but somehow his logic worked. Also probably because his old Bravada had terrible alignment!
Another thought, get some orange cones from the hardware store. It will make it easier to mark a space for parallel parking practice which is sooooo critical around here. I can not tell you how awful my bumper looks after parking in the Udistrict a few weekends ago, someone just scraped along my car to get out. Punks.
