clark5080ParticipantI was wondering if people would comment on the various places to exercise in West Seattle. I really need to make some changes in my life after having some prostate surgery. I need to loose weight and get in better shape.
What you like or dislike about where you work out please?

SueParticipantI like Snap Fitness very much and have been a member since they opened. It’s open 24/7 so you don’t have to worry about whether it its your schedule. The price is really reasonable, it’s clean, never really crowded and the machines are in good repair. They do have personal trainers if interested. They do not have any kind of group classes, if that would be something you’re looking for. The owners are also from West Seattle.

CMPParticipantFor a free workout, walking the Thistle stair case between Fauntleroy and California is great. They get easier the more sets you do, or so it seems to me. As far as gyms go, I was a member of All Star Fitness for awhile and it was just okay. Pros are a few decent instructors, okay equipment; cons are lousy parking, things always seem to be broken and their cancellation policy is, um, interesting.
I swim at Southwest and while I don’t particularly care for it (inconvenient lap swim schedule, lane ropes and no flags), it’ll do for most people. I hear their water aerobics classes are pretty nice in the evenings. I think the community center offers a lot of classes so you could try something out and stick to it if you enjoy it. Beats going to the gym if you’re doing something that’s fun.

velo_nutParticipantDoes the YMCA have a pool?
after surgery from Prostate Cancer, my father swam to keep up his fitness (He was an ultra marathon cyclist before so he was worried about post surgery fitness as well). He wore a life jacket with hand & foot fins as well as a swim belt to run in the pool. He found the pool to be very therapeutic.

ErikParticipantI used to belong to gyms and rode bicycles for thousands of miles down the highways, but I’ve found the most efficient and satisfying workout for me is a reality-based one of yardwork.
In the past month I’ve lost 10lbs just trying to clear the blackberries and other s*&^t from the rental property.

nuniMember24 hour fitness in Westwood, All Star Fitness down by Avalon Way, YMCA, Snap Fitness, Bikram Yoga in the Junction, I think there might still be another small fitness center above Maharajah in the junction but I don’t remember. I believe there’s also an Anytime Fitness on California..

KimberleyParticipantNot sure about the Fauntleroy YMCA, but the other YMCA in West Seattle has a pool. I tend to get out along alki to run/walk or walk the dog as often as possible. I haven’t belonged to a gym since I left D.C. (which may or may not be a good thing) but have access to one near work when I want one. The Admiral Way hill always gives me a pretty decent workout. I may have to check out that Thistle staircase as well.

addParticipantOh, that Thistle staircase is one mean workout! For a change of pace, you can hoof it up the Rose St. hill just to the left of the staircase if you’re starting at Fauntleroy. There are actually tons of those types of stairs hidden around WS – I think someone posted a walking map here once with the stair cases noted??
We have been members of the Y for 11 years and love it – the fees are a little high but they do have a scholarship program.

BonnieParticipantWe’re members of the Y and I love it too. Do you have kids though? I think that would make a difference. I like the Y for their family program.
Have to agree with the Thistle Steps! Kicked my butt!

TKDguyParticipantHave you also considered the many local community center exercise programs available? They have all kinds of classes: aerobics, zumba, dance, martial arts, etc. I teach a tae kwon do class at Hiawatha Community Center 3 times a week for $30 a month and it is an excellent way to stay in shape and have fun. Check it out at http://www.hiawathatkd.org/

JayDeeParticipantI have been a member of Anytime Fitness for a year come January. They say they are in the 500+ member range which seems like a lot, but All-star is in the 5K-6K range. The main reason I went with Anytime is proximity to my house–the closer the gym, the more likely you are to go there.
–
They have a good selection of free weights and machines. Downside is that there are only two exercise bikes (conventional and recumbent) which I have found to be problematic every 1/4 times (I like the conventional type).
–
There are a number of “body types” present, from the buff studs/studettes to generally older folk with more weight management issues. Everyone pretty much keeps to themselves which is fine.
–
There are no showers/courts available; they do have 24/7 access with a RFID tag “key” and video surveillance.
–
I have enjoyed my last year at the gym, and the positive changes I have seen because I’ve been going. The owners seem open to suggestions and are often on-site. I’d recommend Anytime if you are just looking for a local gym with basic equipment. The gym is on the second floor with peek-a-boo views of the Olympics and the neighborhood (which is nice).

SueParticipantnuni, the fitness center in the junction that I think you’re thinking of is 8 Limbs Yoga and Fitness Together personal training center. They’re above Matador, I believe, with entrance in the alley. Fitness Together is a WSB sponsor, with a link over in the sidebar.

SmittyParticipantI have friends who swear by Anytime Fitness (Cali & Charlestown)
