funkietooParticipantHi Andrea206,
Thank you for posting. Like many of the people on this blog with rescue experience will have as soon as they read your post, I have a few questions.
First, let me answer your question. The kitten is too young to be wormed. When the kitten is ready to be de-wormed, you’ll want to use strongid–not over the counter stuff. The kitten is also too young to be de-fleaed (not that you asked, but thought I should include this info). If the kitten has fleas, comb it with a flea comb, rinsing the comb in a mixture of water and Dawn dish soap to kill the fleas.
So, here are my questions and please realize they are out of concern for the 3-week old kitten who is way too young to be separated from its mother. They are very, very, very fragile at this age:
1)Where is the mother and are there any siblings? If there are siblings, are they still with the mother? If the mother and other kittens are available/their location is known, is the owner willing to surrender them to a rescue group or shelter? If the other kittens /siblings have been given away, can we get them all back to the mother?
2) How long have you had this kitten?
3) What are you feeding the kitten? At 3 weeks old, kittens are not weaned from their mother and have to be fed every 2 -3 hours with the proper formula; need to be expressed; etc. This kitten needs to be bottle fed, which means every 2-3 hours, 24 hours a day, plus kept warm; and other critical needs must be met. Can you take care of this kitten 24 hours/day for the next few weeks?
4) The kitten will also need other kittens/a cat in order to social in a healthy manner.
Please feel free to contact me at funkietoo@hotmail.com to discuss. Thanks.

mehud7ParticipantThank you funkietoo for addressing many of the concerns about having such a young kitten. I do have one more, if the mother is feral, she needs to be trapped and spayed. She can also be trapped and put into foster care with this kitten and any others that she may have out there. We can provide that service.

hammerheadParticipantPlease do not use any dewormer or flea products over the counter they can kill your animals.

WDParticipantFor flea removal, try the DerMagic Flea Bar, available at many local pet shops and online at the DerMagic website. It’s locally made with natural ingredients, including diatomaceous earth which will kill fleas without harming animals or humans. It is NOT a pesticide. In fact there is even a food grade diatomaceous earth. Google it for more info. I don’t own stock or have any vested interest in the DerMagic company, I’m just very impressed with the results from use on my own animals.

brittlestarMemberAndrea, if you’re having trouble finding the time to clean your ferret cage, maybe consider re-homing the kitten to someone with more time for pets.

hammerheadParticipantI totally AGREE with brittlestar, this seems very odd. One has to wonder……
I am happy to be the “bad” guy here, but it sounds like you do not have the time for a 3 week old kitten, if that is how old it is.
This is the kind of stuff that makes me crazy and seem abrupt. GOD please give the kitten Marianne(FAF) she is in West Seattle.
