Can anyone shed light on the situation? The vibe at W. Seattle PCC seemed bad recently, not like other PCCs (Greenlake and Fremont).I go out of my way to shop PCC’s pricey but more reliably healthy food, especially fish. But it kind of defeats the purpose when the food handlers seem really disgruntled (like in the meat dept.)The manager also seems very corporate–not like the culture at other PCCs.

Not quite sure how this post fits in with WSB rules re: addressing an issue with the business before posting…but I’ll add a comment and see what happens. Since we’re not talking about an incident, but a “vibe” it might feel odd taking this to management.

I kind of noticed this, too – especially in the meat department. But I’ve had trouble adjusting to the remodel in general. I just can’t find anything any more, and end up forgetting a lot of things I need because they’re no longer in an order that is logical for me. I know other people who love the new layout, but I’m not one of them. Seems like there has been a lot of turnover in the personnel area lately as well; all the folks I knew there for years have gone away all of a sudden. Perhaps it is all a matter of new management; hard to say.

Okay; my turn. And yes, I have complained. For me, it’s not the meat dept., but some of the cashiers–negative, depressive, unfriendly–whose demeanor I did not complain about. It was the treatment of the food I was purchasing. They slam my fruit!!! I am paying a lot of money for organic fruit, and hell if I want it banged down as they run it through the scanner. Think bruised apples, smushed cherries. I complained, and the overseer of the cashiers said she’d take care of it. However, last week, the banging of the peaches drove me to say something, like “Could you take care with the fruit?”, to which I received a hostile stare.

I have also complained that the baggers put the hot chicken next to…ice cream? I called that one in a couple of years ago, but it still happens.

I hate to say it, but there’s a bit of a frosty aura amongst shoppers, no? My kids always remark when someone is outgoing/friendly…like, wow! How cool! Someone talked to us!

I too have not gotten used to the new set-up since the “remodel” — drives this OCD, Virgo nuts that the aisles are set at an angle!

Was in there today though when a cashier asked the customer ahead of me if it was o.k. that the hot items were bagged with the non-hot… just maybe, angelscrest it’s coming about slowly!?!

It’s funny but I think the store layout is to blame for at least the customers ‘tude. The “design” isn’t designed to let one shop but to cause both confusion and contusion. Especially the third aisle that ends near the bulk food. I think that it is easy to be startled and traffic jams are the norm. There should be 1-2 less islands up front–that would help some. But the diagonal aisles and crowded walkways are part of it, IMHO.

I do hate the new layout for sure although I haven’t really noticed an attitude from the employees. Possibly because I’m just trying to make sure I didn’t forget anything (the new layout just makes me stressed when I shop) that I’m obviously to an attitude.

The worst thing ever is the milk cooler in the far corner. There is always this crazy traffic jam there. I can’t have my cart too far away because my daughter is in it, so I’m trying to get the milk, not make the cart too in the way of someone else and get out of the way quickly, sometimes then being blocked in by someone else. If the normal milk we want is out of stock and I have to take another moment to look at options then suddenly it’s a huge lineup or I’m in the way of the meats in the corner (which people do need more than a minute to look over).

great feedback–the layout is such a given–I didn’t even think about the impact–just tried to cope–. I’m a fanatic about not buying meat or fish or chicken from big box stores but that new Safeway with big aisles is going to be mighty nice

Just can’t let this pass because my experience has been so different. I LOVE PCC and the people who work there. I go out of my way to learn their names and engage them in friendly conversation whenever I’m in the store. In return, they know me and always greet me with a smile. Within the past 2 weeks I have gotten a free bunch of baby turnips, a free watermelon radish, and a free Yerba Matte tea, all to try out. I just don’t share the same complaints about the layout, bagging or the manager.

    jissy, another OCD Virgo here!

The bagging issue is one I left out, and it’s not just an issue at PCC. I do share angelescrest dismay at having fruit slammed, and then finding the tomato and avocado at the bottom of the bag…But the one I truly don’t get is the habit these days of lying bottles, jars, and liquid containers on their sides. Cartons get smashed and leak; jars and bottles are thick on the BOTTOM for good reason – they are designed to withstand impact on the bottom. Bagging in a supermarket was one of my first jobs, and I was actually given training in how to do it – so I get fussy when I’m handed a 30 lb. bag with nothing but bottles in it, and another with fruits on the bottom and cans on top. OK, end of rant.

cathyw, I used to feel the same way. Knew all of the checkers by name and friendly relationships with produce, meat managers, etc. The other day when I shopped there wasn’t a single recognizable face. They’ve also eliminated a number of items I purchased on a regular basis. I was told that they will no longer use space for any item that is not a big money-maker.

OK, NOW this thread has gone past “there’s a vibe” and into rants. (Thanks to those who flagged it.) Rants are not allowed as add-ons any more than they are allowed as original posts, unless you explain how you have brought this to management/ownership’s attention, and I’m not seeing much of that here. If you have included a rant in this thread, please add that information or it’s out of here. Thanks.

Chiming in with a rave for two baggers at Metropolitan Market: Penny and Derrick. They are attentive about their bagging, friendly with kids, and always so helpful! I’m happy to pay a little extra for that kind of service.

The new layout is definitely a pain in the *knee* — my bad body part. But employees I’ve encountered have been wonderful — they even offer to walk to the back of the store to get milk for me — it may be because I so obviously need help; but I’m not a regular who spends a lot of money. Ie, I’ve noticed no downturn in service. Remember, the employees have to deal with the vast increase in space (walking)) even more than the customers.

Can this be? Charlabob is cheery to balance others’ negative experiences? Nah — it’s a hallucination. :-)

We love PCC. The employees are always really nice. I go practically every day and never noticed any employees with bad attitudes. They are always really helpful and friendly. Leslie, one of the workers even let me use the employee bathroom when she saw that I was waiting to go. I am pregnant and she always asks how I am doing. The new layout it not much different than the other as far as getting around. They don’t have that much space to work with. I would rather pay a little more for quality food and be healthier and pay less in doctor bills, than buy food that is cheap and processed and comes from who knows where. PCC is always very conscious about knowing where their food comes from and what’s in it. I now live further from PCC but I will always make the drive to get better food and service.
