    Hi,

I’m considering to move to West Seattle, the North Delridge area. Just wanted to get some general feedback of this area. I hear from friends that safety may be concern in that part of West Seattle. I’ve never spent much time there, so I’m not familiar with the area.

Any input would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

we now live a little farther south than north delridge…. but had the town home i looked at in the area had a bit more yard space for the pups we would have felt safe renting there.

North Delridge is great. They have an active community council there that works hard to make the neighborhood strong. Honestly, I think folks who can speak to North Delridge the best are the folks who actually live there.

On the WSB banner on the side, there is a category listing neighborhoods and some community councils. If I were you, I would contact them and start a conversation. Outsiders to North Delridge might not have enough facts or experience in hand to speak to safety issues. What does that mean anyway? Not referring to you JoB. I mean other folks. And you know what I mean.

I have always thought North Delridge was funky, had some killer views, and was the most convenient location for commutes.

Also, if you want actual facts about the crime rates in any neighborhoods anywhere in Seattle – http://seattle.gov/police has links to different ways to avail yourself of that data. Anecdotally, I can tell you one thing – random attacks are very rare in EVERY part of West Seattle (and most of the city). We haven’t had a homicide in more than a year. Property crime can hit anywhere – we get reports from neighborhoods all over the peninsula – but when it comes down to deciding personal safety, I always look at the violence stats, and anyplace you choose around here, you’ll find they’re very low. Echoing what wsd said, North Delridge has a great Neighborhood Council. I hope some of them will see this thread.

My partner and I bought our first home in the North Delridge neighborhood one year ago. I feel, personally, that we could not have picked a better neighborhood. About half of our neighbors have been here for decades, the other half are young[ish?] couples and families, a very diverse crowd.

Location wise, the commute to downtown is quick by bus and bike commuting to downtown is pretty easy. We can even walk up to the Junction. There are a nice amount of amenities in the area [Delridge Community Center, Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, the playground & wading pool, the trail that follows Longfellow creek]. I feel comfortable walking my dog alone at night, and neighbors keep an eye out for each other. I love it here and I am proud to call North Delridge home.

Since you mentioned Longfellow Creek, evie, THAT I can speak to. I have a client who lives across the street from the Delridge park and I’ve just been exploring the unbelievable hidden treasure that greenbelt trail is! WoW!

I’ve seen the neighborhood up close and chatted with really friendly really chatty folks there. It seemed just as terrific as every other chatty West Seattle neighborhood I’ve walked through. Diverse in the best of ways, lots of creative energy and LOTS of green energy! The trail system itself is just gorgeous with WONDERFUL sculptures and the coolest footbridge is in there. I took some shots of it just yesterday, as a matter of fact.

And the creek is not just a little trickle – it babbles quite loudly! It’s lovely in there. And as I said, lots of very friendly, utterly non-threatening folks out on the streets stopping to pet the dogs or ask questions, talk flowers, what ever. It felt good to me. Lots of amenities too – Luna Park Cafe has awesome milkshakes. You need to know that important factoid if you’re gonna’ hang your hat in North Delridge ;).

Visit and walk around. No better way to get a strong sense of a place. All of West Seattle, in truth, is a pretty good place to land.

I think you’ve gotten a lot of good info already. As for the safety concern – historically Delridge was a blue collar neighborhood and a bit rough. In the past 10 years it has changed quite a bit.

I’d recommend visiting the Delridge Library, or Pearl’s Coffee shop at Edmunds St and Delridge Way for a few minutes to get a feel for the folks of the neighborhood as well as spending about a half hour at any of the many parks.

I’ve lived in N. Delridge for almost 5 years. The only real complaint I have living in a town house on Delridge Way is the noise.

Cons: trash as in litter, or someone dumping their trash in your can. The quarterly adopt a street clean ups help with litter, but it’s a problem in this neighborhood on some streets, but not all. We’re not that far from the SW Police station, so there are sirens at any hour. Not bad, but something notable if you’re not used to it.

Pros: Walk ability to the Library and many park “gems” – so many cool trails along Longfellow Creek. And, an easy bus commute to Downtown. A diverse mix of residents both renters and home owners, you’ll see a Lexus parked behind an old Toyota on Delridge Way. The Neighborhood Council is active (meets on Second Mondays at 6:30pm at the Library), and is pretty low key.

    Happy looking!

My husband and I bought our first home (a townhouse) in North Delridge two years ago and are pretty happy with the neighborhood. We live on Delridge also and yes, it can be a bit loud but we do live in the city :)

The neighbors we have met have been great, it’s also pretty diverse which is something I like as well. As many people have said, there is the library right down the street, the community center, Youngstown, the Longfellow Creek Trail and can’t forget the Skylark!

Sure, there can be some issues but you will have that anywhere in West Seattle. Getting downtown is a breeze on the 120. I think it’s definitely worth checking out and maybe we will soon be welcoming you to the neighborhood!

Oh yeah, and we have a very active dog so walk the neighborhood a lot. I have never felt worried about walking around by myself at all. Besides, it’s a great way to meet your neighbors. We also have a great P-Patch that has one of the shortest wait lists in the city (a little over a year).
