West Memphis 3: Free at last!!

OK, this isn’t strictly West Seattle related (unless you take into consideration the fact that West Seattleite Eddie Vedder was heavily involved in helping secure freedom for these guys).

I’ve been following this case for at least 10 years, ever since the release of the documentary ‘Paradise Lost’. The case is a frightening indictment of the justice system, including the jury system, as well as an expose of the dangers of bible belt paranoia and persecution. For those not familiar with the case, the documentary series is excellent, though sensitive viewers should avoid the intro ‘discovery’ portion. Fairly graphic and horrifying. Three little boys were murdered in rural Arkansas, and three teenage misfits (one was Wiccan and wore black clothing – horrors!)were immediately cast as the prime suspects, tried, and convicted with virtually no evidence. One of the young men, the former Wiccan, has been sitting on death row for 18 years.

I’m sure there will be plenty about this on the news over the next few days, but I just wondered if there were more WM3 supporters out there in WS land saying…HOORAY!!

Too bad there wasn’t as much outrage about police powers abuses in Seattle. Glad the “3” finally got their freedom.
