WSBKeymasterSorry and check back later today. The compounding problem is that we can’t get the spam posts deleted fast enough, while we work to try to fix the reason they are not getting filtered in the first place.

PatrickKeymasterNothing much more I can say except, rue the spammers.

miwsParticipantThanks, you two. I think most of us know that you are doing the best you can, what with this rickety old Forum software, and oh, say all the other stuff involved in running a full-time news site.

WSBKeymasterUpdate, for anybody checking in: Server managers came up with a tactic to hold the spammers off at the gate – at least, it’s been six hours since the last attack now, a big shower of spam at 8:26 this morning that took us hours to delete by hand. Meantime, operator(s) are standing by, refreshing the screen every minute or two to catch anything new that comes in, and over the course of the day it’s just been one-offs. – TR

dhgParticipanteasy easy fix: posting page has just a couple of fields. Add one more, make it hidden. Change the submit button to test for text in the hidden field. If there is any, then keep the button disabled, otherwise, enable. It has worked well on many an old web system.

WSBKeymasterthanks … I can’t even start to imagine how we’d do that. Anyway, so far we’re going on 13 hours now with only a small burplet of spam while we were both covering meetings … been working with our server company on yet more security … one of us will get up extra early so that if the spammers do hit during the few hours both of us are usually asleep (and reliant on breaking news texts so NEVER hesitate to call 206-293-6302) we’ll hopefully have it erased before the rest of the world wakes up. – TR

schwaggyParticipantI’ve asked in the past but have forgotten your response. Are you able to change to forum software that includes secure email/ID-based login, thus reducing the ability for spammers to post here, while adding UI features that make visiting and contributing better?
Forums I frequent around the Internet include:
– Login via unique ID and strong passwords
– Send PM’s to other users, with email notification there’s a message
– Multiple SubForums/Categories
– And most importantly – The capability to continue reading threads at the last post read

WSBKeymasterWe are not making a revolutionary change, sorry.
bbPress became a plug-in for WordPress a few years back and that does bring upgrades. We haven’t been able to use the plug-in version for a variety of reasons. In the upgrade, we will.
Regarding the PMs, bbPress had those. We disabled them after learning of abuse that was being sent to members by other members. Some website owners may be ok with facilitating that as an occasional unfortunate byproduct. We weren’t and aren’t. – TR
