Points well taken brew and ‘dood.

That crossed my mind, and I considered mentioning in my last post that I wouldn’t discuss it any further in this thread, but I didn’t want that to sound like I was “getting in the last word”.

Some of these comments just got under my skin a little.

Brew: I agree that alot of these posts are ‘pathetic.’

miws and Jimmy G: Your attempt at lame humor fall flat on this subject.

It isn’t just about “The courtesy clerk (box boy) must be high”

by putting your 10# of potatoes on top of your bread or improper bagging.

When ‘recreational’ drugs are used you lose judgment resulting in sticky fingers in til to pay for drug habit, employee shoplifting, sometimes inability to get along with co-workers or customers, inappropriate workplace behaviours such as consistent attendance issues, taking long breaks, etc. etc.

    Need I go on.

Come on, folks, you know all this.

If I was in the same position as sda, I might also ask for drug testing and a background check.

Westseattledood: I agree with you re: being cautious about posting any ‘work wanted’ ad on this forum, because I’m finding that some postings are just abit too mean-spirited and ‘snarky.’

    What’s up with that?

Jo, Really? If someone smokes pot a few weeks ago, they will have sticky fingers today? Do you think they might even do something drastic like jump off a bridge perhaps? Ignorance, it can be a great thing!

sda wrote – “kevin – unemployment is completely aware of my self employment status. they actually encourage this option. take a look at their webpage on it! http://www.esd.wa.gov/uibenefits/specialservices/training/self-employment-assistance-program.php”

    .

sda – I stand corrected on the collecting unemployment and working issue. I was not aware that program existed based on your original comment.

    .

carson – Get over the drug screen issue. I’m with sda and others 100% on this one. She does not have to have a reason. Drug screening is quite common these days in ALL sorts of different jobs. If I was hiring someone, I would want to know if they use illegal drugs too.

    .

What you do in your off hours IS your employers business. Many companies forbid working a second job, and that is sometimes even written into a contract.

    .

A drug screening test is simply another component of a background check. There are even a small handful of companies that will test for nicotine in the system as they do not want to hire anyone who uses tobacco – even in their off time.

    .

Reluctance or opposition to submitting to a drug screen would be seen as a red flag to many employers.

    .

Keep in mind that Washington is an “at will employment” state, meaning that an employer can discharge an employee for NO reason at all, although most will usually cover their behind with a generic statement like “business is slow” or “budget cuts) etc.

This has gone way off-topic, as has been pointed out in a flag. We don’t have a way to configure a certain category of posts as “no comments allowed” in the forum. This is, however, meant to be a place for local businesses to NOT have to spend $25 to post a job on Craigslist, or more in various print publications – and a chance for local jobseekers, of which there are many, to know there might be one more place to them to look and possibly find something. We’ve gotten word of some good matches made in this section.

Meantime, for this thread specifically, I am closing it to further comment, and inviting those of you who wish to discuss the side topics such as screening for drug use, to open a separate thread if you want to discuss it.
