sumlovParticipantHi Beautiful people,
I was pondering on this first day of Fall whether there are people other than myself who would be partial to a Uwajimaya store in WS?
September 23, 2014 at 4:00 pm #814031
JoBParticipantyes
although i am not sure they could compete with the asian markets in white center
Uwajimaya is certainly more palatable for someone not familiar with the products..
but there is no way they could match the prices

KenParticipantI want a phone app that can translate from a picture. I would either buy more or possibly less stuff there if I could figure out what it was.

biankatParticipantThere’s a small Japanese store/deli/market in Georgetown called Maruta that I go to quite often. http://marutashoten.com/ They place secondary labels products that are in Japanese. Nice staff too.

rwParticipantMaruta is more of a mini-mart but great for lunch-time takeout.
For people in central and north West Seattle I actually think it is easier to get to and from the existing Uwajimaya and other Asian markets in the I-District than to visit markets in White Center. The less well known markets generally have better prices than Uwajimaya, but adequate English language signage is a challenge.
It helps to be adventurous and make repeat visits to understand various ingredients and your own limits. For example, I now make my own Dashi from scratch rather than rely on instant ramen packets, which are extremely high in sodium/MSG.

JanSParticipantwell, as an alternative right now, you could always shop on Instacart online http://www.instacart.com It’s free to sign up, you get a credit, I think when you sign up, delivery (same day) is $3.99, I believe, for over $35 purchase (1st delivery free). It’s like having a personal shopper – lol.

You can shop at Uwajimaya, QFC, Whole Foods and Costco (no membership needed)

trickycooljParticipantKen- google translate does translate by picture in their app.
And yes I’d love Uwaji in the neighborhood. :)

anonymeParticipantA Kinokinuya bookstore would be welcome, as would the Asian food court.
Does anyone know of a natural/organic instant udon/ramen/noodle soup base? Like the packets in ramen, only in a jar (bulk). I’ve looked at Uwajimaya, but it’s too confusing.

rwParticipantWindows Phone also have a photo translation app, I never thought to try it. I’ll try it out next time I’m in an asian market. Thanks for the tip.
As for instant ramen base, there are a few instant Dashi bases that DO NOT contain MSG, but you have to hunt for them. Otherwise Dashi is fairly easy and reasonably quick to make.
Also, you can substitute chicken stock and add a bit of miso and oriental spices to come up with a reasonable substitute. Obviously that strategy takes a bit of trial and error to get the flavor balance you want.

melissaParticipantThere are so many excellent markets in White Center. I mean, Uwajimaya is huge and has a ridiculously large selection, but my fave neighborhood joint (and I can get two bags of great groceries for cheap!!) is the Phnom Khiev, at that little triangle just south of the center of the commerical dist in White Center and just north of McLendon. Fabulous, fabulous stuff. Great greens (although many aren’t labeled, so you have to guess or ask), gorgeous cactus pads and chiles, canned goods of all sorts, and really sweet employees. Sure it smells a little funky, but I’ve always been delighted with items I buy there and I walk out the door spending about a third of what I do at other stores.

wakefloodParticipantMelissa, ditto everything you said. We shop there while waiting for our great food from the taco truck at the north end of that parking lot.

JTBParticipantMuramatz makes a bonito dashi mix in little bags which is excellent. It’s the only one I’ve found at Uwajimaya that doesn’t have added MSG.

CaitParticipantWell one thing’s for sure… now I want to go to Uwajimaya.
