JohnsonMemberI really can’t believe how horrible the food is here. Completely tasteless.
I should open a store right next to it and microwave frozen Chinese dinners, it would put them out of business… if anyone in Seattle still has taste buds, that is.

KenParticipantYes it is the place for cornstarch. But they deliver. Some dishes are worse than others.
For good Chinese food ya have to go to the ID.
Many people alive today have never tasted authentic ethnic food, and some of us who tasted it in the field are grateful for some of the americanized influences. Mexico in the 70’s comes to mind.

datamuseParticipantI’ve never been to China, but the Chinese food I had in Thailand beat the pants off anything I’ve ever had in the States.
That said, 668 Bistro in the ID is good. Haven’t found a place in WS I like.

TDMemberIn the 15 years I’ve lived in this neighborhood, I only remember one decent Chinese restaurant. Used to be on the west side of California, near where the Rite Aid is now (and gone for many years).
The old New Luck Toy gave me MSG poisoning more than once, and the few times I’ve been to Ho-Win, their specialty seemed to be stir-fried cockroach.
There’s certainly an untapped market for decent Chinese food in WS.

JiggersMemberChinese cuisine in Seattle overall is horrible with a capital H. There’s always something missing in their dishes. I don’t know how these guys stay in business if the food is aweful. They changed their name maybe some 5 years ago. Hawai’i makes the best chinese food around period in the U.S. Vancouver in Canada and San Francisco have excellent chinese cuisine as well. Then again, we’re far from being in Hawai’i and all. You have to venture into the International District if you want good chinese cuisine. My favorite used to be on Aurora ave. until it closed down two years ago after being opened for thirty years. The name was Doog Koon Lau or something like that. Also Seagarden in Chinatown is always good but you need $$$$.

DianaParticipantMemories…Doong Kong Lau. About ten years ago there were approximately 15 of us and we called ahead and spoke to the owners to reserve two big round tables. We gave them a budget and asked them to cook for us, and they did. We passed all of their fabulous food around, and the cooks and owners served and visited and really showed off what they could do. It was a really fun time and we all miss them. They deserved their retirement. It reminded me of similar adventures in Los Angeles and New York. If anyone knows of such a place in Seattle please post it! I have become fond of Lee’s Asian and for West Seattle I think it’s the only place to go.

MrJTMemberDoong Kong Lau was the BEST. We went to have dinner there the week after they closed, and the back parking lot had about 15 people standing ther like they were at a funeral. It was really sad. The family that ran it was awesome.

bsmommaParticipantYuck Yuck Yuck! Back in the day when you could see into the kitchen from an outside door, I saw a cook cooking with a cigarette and LONG ash hanging out of his mouth! Ho Win, Nasty!!! I’m surprised that place hasn’t been shut down by the Health Department. It is so dirty and nasty inside. Out of all the chineese cuisine choices in West Seattle, China Express is at the top of my list! Seriously, I like there sweet & sour chicken. Chen’s Village (I think it’s on Western) is AWESOME! I’ve only had my food to go so I cannot say how there dining would be. I’m a SUPER picky meat eater and there Chicken and Beaf are AWESOME!

livingonthebeachMemberI too wonder how they stay open. I’ve been there a few times and was disgusted with the lack of cleanliness. Walked in at 7:00pm and every table was dirty with dishes. Asked is there had been a rush and she actually told me it was from lunch!
Bathrooms were horrible. Left and will never return. Told them on the way out we weren’t comfortable there.

General Tso’s Chicken
Honey Glazed Walnut Prawns
Tom Yum Soup
Curried Vegetables.
But – I’ve never had anything there that I didn’t like!

Heinz57MomMemberI have been to China and also recommend Lee’s Asian. Also would caution you to ALWAYS check the health department website before going to a new restaurant. It can save you in more ways than one!

JiggersMemberTha Ben Hoshi teriyaki on 35th (off the bridge) is disgusting. The worst teriyaki plate I have ever had. How do they stay in business.They never look busy. My favorite teriyaki joint is Niko’s in Jefferson Square.
