A Salon Story that points out what Republicans tried to do last week:

I would like to know the percentage of Republican voters in which States get SSI…I bet it would be like other taxes (Blue states subsidze Red States, Western WA subsidzes Eastern WA)…But which voters overwhelmingly want no taxes (Like the tea partier holding a sign: “Get your Guv’ment hands off my Medicare.”

At some point there will have to be a long term solution to keep SSI funded. Unlike other issues the math behind SSI is well understood. The two easiest ways to fully fund are:

Raise the “full” or normal SS age from 66 or so by a year or two say 67 or 68. This would not prevent folks who really need the money “early” at 62 or maybe 63 from doing so. This was done back in the early 1980’s when the “full” age was raised from 65. There was lots of warning as it did not effect anyone over 18 years old at the time . We likely don’t have quite that luxury now and it might be people who are say under 40 right now who would have to wait until 67 or 68 to retire, but that’s still quite a bit of advance notice.

The other “easy” approach is to pump more money into the system by eliminating the feature that stops SSI deductions once folks have made about $120,000 a year. Some might think this unfair since higher earning people would be paying in more but their benefit would still be capped at current levels.

Either way we can’t repeal the laws of economics, either less money will have to be paid out from SSI or more money will have to go into the fund.
