SmittyParticipantOh boy, how I would love Dan Snyder(team owner) to pick this name. Talk about a “you asked for it” moment.
A win/win situation, right?
June 27, 2014 at 2:49 pm #810168
miwsParticipantInteresting concept.
So, they’d bust the National Football League Players Association (Union), and impose Trickle Down?
You know, the owners would get (even more) massive tax cuts, the players would take huge pay/benes cuts, while at the same time shouldering the tax burden created by the cuts to the owners?

dobroParticipantAnything would be better than redskins.
I guess they’d have to hope the team wasn’t really like Reagan-old, slow, and can’t remember the plays.
June 27, 2014 at 5:26 pm #810170
metrognomeParticipantinteresting that the conservative Washington Times doesn’t suggest naming them after other Republican heroes:
The Washington Nixons
The Washington Agnews
or my favorite, The Washington Fawns (after Ollie North’s secretary during the Iran/Contra affair that current conservatives can’t remember.)
or maybe after other American heroes …
the D.C. Edisons, recalling the epic AC/DC battle between Edison and Tesla.
Wait, I got it!
the Washington AC/DC’s!
wonder if we’d be having a different conversation if the current name was the ‘Blackskins.’
June 27, 2014 at 5:56 pm #810171
SmittyParticipantSpeaking for myself, I think it needs to change.
This option at least is in sync with the owners politics, sounds “similar” to the current name and is a jab at ( what I perceive to be)most his detractors at the same time.
I think it’s perfect.
Just think of all the jokes – there are already some here!

SmittyParticipant“So, they’d bust the National Football League Players Association (Union), and impose Trickle Down?”
Mike, they’d bust the union only if they threatened the safety of the country and it was against their contractual obligations……I am not too concerned about the NFLPA posing a danger to us all – unless you count Richard Sherman’s rants!
An yes, “trickle down” is already in place! Tom Brady makes way more than the rookie safety but they all win super bowls (and bonuses and pay raises)!!!!!

miwsParticipantThe Washington Nixons
Visiting Team accommodations will be at the Watergate Hotel. Any room(s) where the Visitors Strategy may be discussed, will be bugged/taped.
The Washington Agnews
Ownership will get involved in tax evasion, and accepting bribes.

ChookieMemberIf we’re examining political-correctness, how bout the Cleveland Indians mascot? Has anything been said about that?
June 27, 2014 at 7:29 pm #810175
skeeterParticipantHa! I grew up just a few blocks away from Fawn Hall in suburban DC. I also delivered the Washington Post to Larry Speakes.
June 27, 2014 at 7:56 pm #810176
wakefloodParticipantChookie, yes, the Indians retained their comic book character mascot “Chief Wahoo” in the 90’s amid significant discussion. The image was updated from the original that was straight out of a 1930’s Looney Tunes parody.
June 27, 2014 at 9:35 pm #810177
MaxineParticipantI heard a guy on the radio the other day joking that they should keep the name Redskins, but change the mascot to a red potato. Can’t you just see the logo? A nice, buttery red potato with a few lovely sprigs of rosemary across it!

wakefloodParticipantJune 27, 2014 at 11:36 pm #810179
metrognomeParticipantMaxine — that’s a great one; the cheerleaders could be called the Spudettes!
Of course we’re all missing the obvious accolades due to the Bush dynasty and all the wunnerful memories 41 and 43 have given us —
the Washington Georges!
they could have summer camp at, where else, George, Washington. Their team slogan could be ‘Mission Almost Accomplished, Sorta’ and the transportation to their home games could be called, ‘No New Taxis’. Their mascot would be Hanging Chad. Of course, the Supreme Court would have to decide the outcome of each game.

waynsterParticipantOh my to name a team along with buildings airports after Uncle Ronnie oh no no no I can’t take it ahhhhhhhh!!! …… lmao

4th of EightParticipantOn the snarky side, just call them The Washinton Rednecks, if he won’t change it. On the serious side, The Washinton Warriors sounds better off the tongue, and it still upholds the pride and honor of a winning heritage/culture.
Personally, being of Irish heritage, I HATE that damn little ugly stereotype Notre Dame ‘fighting Irish’ leprechaun. Also, despite it being 2014, ALL the local TV and radio stations still use the ignorant and cultureally insensitive term ‘paddy wagon’ … yet people don’t even know why they say that for a ‘police van!’ (Heck, it’s one syllable shorter!). All points about the Redskins, you have to respect and LISTEN to the people of the said heritage, and not flippantly ignore their hurt. No second side to it. Otherwise we could have too much fun with not respecting and calling out rich, arrogant white owners. (How about The Pasty Palefaces?? How would he like THAT?!!!)

DaveBParticipantJune 28, 2014 at 4:36 pm #810184
SmittyParticipantDaveB that should be interesting to watch. I wonder when they say:
“We are not mascots. My children are not mascots. We are people.”
if they are limiting this to the “Indians” or if it will expand to include other teams and mascots? I would be curious if “Seminoles”, “Warriors”, “Chiefs” and “Braves” are offensive too? I am not being facetious – I just honestly don’t know. And, if there is a differentiator who decides? Do we take a nationwide vote of native americans or something – or in the case of the Seminole tribe is that completely up to them?
ANd are certain mascots OK if it is a native american school? Lummi “Blackhawks” and Chief Leschi “Warriors”, etc……I would think so, but may add confusion.
That said. If Washington does in fact change their team name to the Reagans this long-time Cowboy fan might have to buy some gear!
June 28, 2014 at 5:20 pm #810185
dobroParticipantSome of these words would be fine if they were disassociated with cartoon images of Native Americans. Warriors can refer to any kind of warfighters, just lose the Indian headdresses, popeyes, and big noses.
I hope it does expand to getting rid of braves, indians, and other invocations of people, tribes, and ethnic stereotypes. There are plenty of animal, plant, and natural phenomena that can be used to glorify sports teams without perpetuating racism and stereotypes.

4th of EightParticipant@ dobro… Well said.
June 29, 2014 at 2:41 am #810187
SmittyParticipantAgree with you dobro (is that a first?).
A friend of mine went to Mountain View High School in Vancouver, WA. They were the “Thunder”. I thought that was pretty cool, actually.
June 29, 2014 at 3:57 am #810188
dobroParticipant“Agree with you dobro (is that a first?).”
Mark this day on your calendar!! (Actually, I’m sure there are many things we would agree on but the topic selections generally pit us on opposite sides).
This, to me, is simple. Why insult and degrade people for no reason? For the name of a stupid sports team that is arbitrarily chosen anyway? Why not pick something uplifting rather than degrading?
July 1, 2014 at 3:30 am #810189
ForestParticipantI can see changing the DC team name to “Chickenhawks,” with Dick Cheney and Rush Limbaugh as the official team mascots.
