Think of your favorite little roadside burger joint… that also has 25 beers on tap. Slimmed down, to-the-point, wonderfully executed new menu, just burgers and sandwiches; the bacon cheese burger I had was fantastic. Won’t stop going to Zippy’s, but living in the Admiral district, glad I now have a worthy option near home!

Porterhouse has always been a bit of a puzzle to me. I feel like I have heard all manner of negative things about it. But whenever I go there my experiences have always been fine. Not exceptional five-star. But rather, it was always exactly what it was trying to be and should be.

I feel like so much of my time in Seattle is spent trying to reconcile the absolute RAVES that people seem to give to really prosaic places (a.k.a. the famous Seattle undeserved standing ovation). But in the case of Porterhouse I’ve been hard pressed to understand how and why some people have found fault with it.

They contacted us out of the blue a couple days ago and said they were closing for a one-day makeover, which we duly reported.

They had promised more information Wednesday; didn’t get any till Thursday afternoon, and there was way too much news going on to shoehorn this in, but since you all are discussing it, here is the full text of what we received from Porterhouse management:

“We reopened today [Thurs] with regular hours — New floors, new space design, new menu design with a focus on BURGERS + SANDWICHES… A whole new experience. We heard through the hop-vine that we make the best burgers in Seattle, SOOOOO we decided that we would focus on grass fed, farm raised, fast burgers, kick @$$ sandwiches + Craft West Coast Ales.”

Maybe Robert Irving from Restaurant Impossible came through and redesigned the place. Two days and 10,000.00. :)

cjboffoli – I completely agree with you. Not trying to be a foody destination, but mostly good at what they’re trying to do. I’ve had mixed success with some of the higher-end dishes and so have mostly stuck with the burgers and sandwiches. Great to see them focusing on their strengths.

As an aside, cfboffoli, I always get a slight kick out of waiting to see the term “prosaic” in your posts, and then snap, there it is! It’s a great word and you are definitely utilizing it to its full potential. :)

vg: Now that you’ve called out my obstreperous use of the word ‘prosaic’ I will have no choice but to retire it out of discomfiture.

I hate to be obstreperous and raise such a prosaic issue, but not all of us know where every restaurant is or used to be in WS; can someone provide some basic info like an address or nearest intersection or at least the street it is on. Maybe a phone number or website.

I’d ask if it is wheelchair accessible but that would be pushing it (besides, many if not most WS restaurants are ‘accessible’ in the sense that you can get in the front door … and that’s it. With the bar and table arrangements, there isn’t a clear path through the restaurant, so if the first table or two aren’t available, you have to interrupt pretty much everyone in the restaurant and get them to stand up. Bad enough on the way in, worse the second time on the way out.)

metrognome: As much as I like the idea that no information exists anywhere else until it is posted somewhere on the West Seattle Blog, I find it is often faster to type “http://www.google.com” than it is to post something in the Forums asking someone else for the information.

I’m a Bing guy myself. I’m familiar with the concept of search engines, I just thought I would be fun to be obsequious and suggest that people include useful, pertinent information in their posts …

Their website appeared to be 404, but I finally found a working version:

here’s the location info: 2329 California Ave SW (between College St & Admiral Way); 932-2575

We’ve eaten there for dinner and lunch, probably 6-8 times in the year we’ve been back in West Seattle. Its a great option for “pub” fare. The service is great, the food has been good, and the beer selection top notch. Its a local, community pub for sure, with reasonable prices, and a great atmosphere.

I’m surprised that Gordon Ramsay hasn’t made a show in Seattle yet that I’m aware of. There’s a lot of bad restaurants everywhere.

I’ve heard mixed reviews about this place and that’s the main reason I haven’t tried it here yet. I’ll think about dropping by next weekend to see for myself.
