flowerpetalMemberI’ll risk the reputation I might get from this post. I am happy to report that a nation-wide shortage of bottled bitters has come to an end! Because of some financial woes; the production of bitters had halted and store shelves across the nation emptied. I am happy to report that after months of waiting; bitters are back on the shelf. QFC at Westwood finally had these available on Friday (we check frequently wherever we are).
Nov you can make a Manhattan, or an Old Fashioned, or whatever bitter required cocktail you wish… and you can do so with all abandon; but I wouldn’t recommend that.

HelperMonkeyParticipantflowerpetal – have you seen the selection of bitters they have at the Feedback Lounge? it would make you swoon. :)

flowerpetalMemberIts what the bitters are put into that would make me swoon. :-)
I know and have some more exotic bitters, but there is only one Angostura Bitters for Manhattans and the likes. Thanks tho for the tip. I haven’t been to Feedback yet. WRT that, please go easy on me. I can only do so much.

KBearParticipantWe’ve had 3 bottles going in the fridge for years. Didn’t know there was a shortage, cause we’re always in supply. How long does that stuff keep, anyway?

GenHillOneParticipanthahaha, I only relate bitters to being a hangover CURE, not a hangover CAUSE!

flowerpetalMemberBitters last a long long time. You should not worry about the refrigerated shelf life at all. My concern would be as to why you are not using these? Bitters are also used in cooking recipes. Liver pate comes to mind… not usually in my LP, but not an irregular occurence for some.

AimParticipantI love bitters with club soda or other fizzy water. Especially on a hot day. Delicious!
I didn’t know about the shortage either. A bottle lasts SO long. I’ve had my current bottle for probably 5 years…

flowerpetalMemberYes, thanks for the reminder. For a grown-up non-alcholic warm weather drink, bitters and soda, or tonic, is delish. And the kids won’t ask more than once to sip your drink!
April 26, 2010 at 2:22 am #693236
flowerpetalMemberBTW, Angostura stopped production last June and didn’t begin again until November. A bottle can last awhile, but the process takes time too. The shortage was predicted; and smart bartenders (and their distrubtors) stocked up as best they could.

AimParticipantMost definitely. It’s also a good one if you’re the DD or otherwise not drinking, and are at an event where people tend to comment on non-drinking. A little bitters n soda, you look like you’ve got a drink. Works wonders.

lazybeardParticipantSo that’s why I couldn’t find any bitters when I went to store for Dark & Stormy makings! AH HA!
April 26, 2010 at 4:50 am #693239
flowerpetalMemberAlrighty then. You put bitters in your Dark ‘n Stormy? Never have I heard of that… but neither am I opposed to the idea. Is it your own design; or a regional thang?

lazybeardParticipantA friend makes them and put me on the quest to get’m one day, and no dice. They are delicious with’m.
