westseattlegirlParticipantWe were moving last week and a man driving by noticed we had a couch available for free and offered to take it with some other things (in their flatbed) to the dump for us for $20. We happily paid to have that detail of our move resolved.
Later that day, fortunately, we happened upon our couch in an alley a few blocks away. The person who picked it up had obviously dumped it there.
If you, like me, have wondered who is ridiculous and terrible enough to dump their couches in alleys and greenbelts, perhaps you didn’t think it happened to well meaning people like me.
My couch has now been properly disposed of, but I wanted to let people be aware of this scam as the green ways and alleys seem to have been victim to many illegal dumps like this.

CMParticipantHey, since nobody else has said anything, Thanks for doing the right thing and taking care of it after you found it. Too bad it cost you an extra $20. That’s a shame.

transplantellaParticipantI have also noticed that these abandoned furnishings form communities of unwanted stuff.
From my window I can see the overgrown ravine at Murray St. Last year a couch appeared in the median by the sidewalk there. The sofa sat lonely for several weeks. Then a bookshelf came to be along side it. More furniture joined in until there was nearly and entire suite of living room furnishings gathered there together.
We went and got the bookshelf, it was pretty nice. It’s right here full of stuff.
The rest of the Murray St. objects left one by one until only the couch was left. Then one day it was gone too.
It’s like a furniture migration. It comes, forms a group, and then wanders off again.

TanDLParticipantFurniture migration. Love it! I can see it creeping out in the dark to sit with other furniture for awhile, then moving on to form another group. Perhaps I’ll “shop” in the Murray St ravine the next time I need a good bookcase. :)

clulessinwsParticipantThanks westseattlegirl. I didn’t know this could be a possible reason for couches I see from time to time.
.
Not your fault wsg but just so everyone knows, I believe the minimum dump fee is $30. Just an FYI to everyone, if someone offers $20 they could be scamming you.

JanSParticipantI once sat in my office (at home) and watched a neighbor from down the street (and hubs), bring a couch that had been deposited behind their house by someone down the alley, to deposit it behind my building, like no big deal. And there it sat. I called the city..they have a truck that will come by and pick up…for nothing, although it may take a few days. I watched them haul it away…an old truck, loaded with discarded furniture…people are thoughtless pigs, sometimes…
