cfrotMemberWhat needs to happen to get people to slow down on Alki. Last night around 11pm for about an hour modified cars were cruising up and down alki at high speeds. I almost got hit just getting into my car! These cars with their modified mufflers are annoying and dangerous! i feel some speed bumps would really help. especially around the alki automotive area. any thoughts?

WSBKeymasterWe were dining on Alki just before 11. Saw some sort of car-related gathering AT Alki Automotive, but didn’t see speeding cars, maybe just missed them. Come to the Alki Community Council meeting this month and bring up your concern – might be a good place to start. Info at http://www.alkinews.com

abstractParticipantI’ve almost been hit a few times on Alki and Beach Drive. I would really be happy to see speed bumps put in.

beachdrivegirlParticipantAbstract- my husband & I were just saying the same thing. We have had a few cars side swiped infront of our house. Summer nights @ bar close are the worse. You should hear the cars fly by. I was going to ask- does anyone know if the alki community council includes beach drive??? would love to go if it does! :)

anonymeParticipantMixed messages from SDOT on this. I was told that speed bumps could not be installed on arterials. However, there are speed bumps on Beach Drive. Later I was told by SDOT that we wouldn’t want them anyway because they are noisy. It seems that speeding is becoming a serious issue all over — at least in West Seattle. Ultimately, enforcement is the only fix, but so far we haven’t had much luck getting any. Perhaps all the neighborhoods within a given precinct should band together? Power in numbers?

cfrotMemberMaybe i could start a petition and show the strength in numbers. Would you all be willing to sign in support of speed bumps? or more patrolling from the police department. I don’t want to wait until some one is killed to do something. It would also help with the amount of “low-riders” during the summer,
Let me know, and I would be happy to initiate the cause. Thanks!

WSBKeymasterBeach Drive is only a secondary arterial, which is why the “speed humps” are allowed there. Just reiterating, come to next week’s Alki Community Council meeting and you’ll meet people who have already worked on these kinds of issues. BDG, yes, the Alki Community Council covers Beach Drive too – unless you’re way far to the south, close to Lowman, then it might be more like Morgan Junction/Fauntleroy.
Also if you haven’t already – here’s the city webpage you’ll want to check out:

cfrotMemberThanks for the link. That is great information. for others interested in traffic calming, the following info may be of interst to you.(this is pulled from the seattle transportation site as posted above)
“An individual or group can request traffic calming for an arterial street by calling SDOT Neighborhood Traffic Operations at (206) 684-0353. If you are leaving a message please include your name, address, a phone number, e-mail address, and the intersection. You may also go the Resident Request Form, or email us at Neighborhood.Traffic@seattle.gov.”
