WSBKeymasterBeen working on this a LONG time off and on, had to get some underlying software upgraded (which is what we did the other night). Now – we can start adding some overdue features.
What’s in action now:
Avatars: You can now have an avatar (photo or other image that displays on all your posts), but it’s NOT mandatory – so, if you don’t want one, you will NOT have one of those suspicious-looking silhouettes turn up on your posts instead, they’ll just look the way they’ve always looked. For example, you should see a ferry sunset photo by my posts now.
To upload one for yourself, go to your profile (which you can access any time from the bottom of https://westseattleblog.com/blog/forum )
and click avatar. PLEASE note the size limit and file types supported.
Speaking of images, you can now use one in a post if there is a photo you want to share. You cannot UPLOAD it through here – you have to have a URL for it already (from flickr or wherever). JPG or PNG preferably. Nothing wider than 450 pixels, so please check the size before you add it. You have to code it into your post like this:
I will find a place to put a tutorial in here but in the meantime, please bookmark this post.
Last but not least for today (more to come) – the “ignore this user” feature. You are probably already seeing “ignore” at the bottom of posts. If you want to ignore ALL posts by a certain user, click that anywhere – and that’s it. That user will remain ignored by you – their posts won’t show up in your WSB Forum experience at all – until and unless you UNignore them.
To check on who (if anyone) you have ignored, and to un-ignore them if you choose, go to your profile, and click EDIT PROFILE – you will see the list (if any) there, with a simple clickable way to unignore.
More features coming (including “report this post”) … sorry this took a while, but it was a double software upgrade (main site plus the forum program) and Tech Team WSB had to do a lot of work to make sure the two would play well together.
Let me know if you encounter any bugs … TR
p.s. Small tweak, we also have changed the default category to OPEN DISCUSSION when you launch a new topic from the main forum page (it had been Reader Recommendations), but please continue paying close attention to where you want to categorize a post when you start a topic. Thanks!!!

ellenaterMemberTracy, those are great changes. Thanks!
Lately I have to log in every time I use the forum feature. Is this somehow due to the new changes or am I just missing something. For the record (he hee), I am signing in on the actual posts when i want to reply. I don’t see the option to stay logged in. Got any suggestions?
Thanks!

SueParticipantEllenator, I’ve been noticing that too lately – that I have to log in a lot more, where it used to stay logged in unless I cleared cookies. This has been going on for about a week or so on both my computers.
TR, thanks for all the work you do!

WSBKeymasterI’ll have Tech Team WSB check into that. Thanks for pointing it out. Hopefully it’s a simple action you can take somewhere, stand by — might not be immediate, though. Thanks again!!! more to come – TR

GenHillOneParticipantOh so super cool, TR – any way to lay out the avatars next to the names to take up less space on the page?
October 31, 2008 at 7:14 pm #645801
WSBKeymasterGHO – I am going to have Ace Tech Guy look into that. I’m not 100 percent sure if it would work so well because of the blockquote coding for the blue shading on the post text (I have that problem if I try to flush a photo left or right next to a cut-paste reader report or news release) but we will be investigating. AimParticipantFYI anyone who’s having the logging out problem: you have to be logged in to see the ignore option ;-)
I’m testing it now! THANK YOU TR!!!!

hopeyParticipantThanks for the twitter pointer to this post.
Thanks for all your hard word on the new forum features! I’m confident that you’ll work out the remaining bugs soon.
I wonder if the problems with having to log in frequently were just during the upgrades? I can see where it would invalidate the login cookies each time you re-loaded the forum software.
Too bad the “ignore” feature won’t work with the RSS feeds. :)

charlabobParticipantThe “ignore” function is great — especially since it’s retroactive.
Now to get an appropriate avatar — suggestions welcome.
