service dog academyMemberI am teaching the dog training classes at the Delridge Community Center. I have 3 deaf students who are looking to take the April 17th pet dog training class. I have contacted the ADA coordinator for the Seattle Park and Recreation about getting an interpreter for the class but he doesnt seem to want to get back to me. I need to find someone soon. The class meets every saturday from April 17th to May 22nd from 2:00-3:00pm. I would then probably need you to help with the Service Dog class on Sundays in June provided these individuals decided to take that class too. Although I cant pay you for the class, your volunteering might lead to paid sessions when these individuals ask for at home training sessions. Since this is a volunteer position you dont have to be completely fluent but you at least need to have some experience. This would be a great opportunity for a student to practice.

CarolPBMemberCould this possibly be a service the city would provide considering the class is held at a city run community center? Seems that interpreters are provided in other city/county/state functions. Though I agree this would be a good experience and fun for a student, too!

tanyar23ParticipantYou could also see if anyone from Seattle Central Commmunity College’s Interpreter Training Program would be willing to do it too.

HSGParticipantIf the parks dept can’t help, you might also try Abondanza on California. There are regularly people signing there when we pick up pizza. Or, several arts organizations, Initiman, Children’s Theatre, Seattle Rep, etc. have ASL interpreted shows during their seasons. They may be able to point you in the right direction. Finally, Seattle Public Schools may be a good resource. They coordinate many interpreters for public meetings and have DHH programs at TOPS, Eckstein, and one of the high schools, Roosevelt maybe, but I can’t recall off the top of my head. Good luck!
