Got a direct mail ad from LA Fitness today that features a woman in short jeans shorts, white T-Shirt, tool belt & hard hat carrying blueprints; that alone is stupid enough to be mildly offensive, but the header on the ad reads “The excitement is building…”

    .

I infer from this ad that LA Fitness caters to people looking for a “pick-up” vibe in their gym, are more concerned with looking hot than actual health, and believe it’s okay to objectify women.

    .

I definitely won’t be looking into a membership there.

Tacky! And it fits the LA stereotype.

I recently joined LA fitness in Burien with anticipation for the W. Seattle location opening. I’ve been impressed with the clean facility. Also, I have lost a muscle in my chest and the partial use of my left hand due to cancer…my personal trainer has been VERY creative in working around my special needs as has the group fitness instructors. I was a member of West Seattle Athletic club for 2 years and never got to know any of the staff. In just a month several staff members at LA fitness call me by name and encourage me during my work outs.

All the more reason to forego the ignorant, sexist advertising. This is not an image that would attract most women to a fitness facility. At least, one would hope not. I suppose the fool who designed the promo thought that by morphing a pinup into a construction worker that women would feel empowered. Uh, not so much. They may provide decent service within the facility, but this ad campaign is off the mark.

I received the flyer and didn’t think twice until I saw this thread. I didn’t think it was sexist at all. It was a girl in a long sleeve shirt and jean shorts with a hard hat with what looks like the same girl working out in the background. Much ado about nothing. Models tend to be pretty, that’s why they are models.

I got two on the same day, recycle bin…didn’t even read it. Does LA Fitness really thing this is the way to advertise? I’d love to know some statistics as to how effective it is, how it affects new joins.

I joined a gym once. It was difficult to get any exercise. The women were throwing themselves at me while I was trying to work out! Very distracting. These days I just sit in my living room drinking beer and eating potato chips.

“These days I just sit in my living room drinking beer and eating potato chips.”
