LBGMemberSorry, I had to way into the alternate universe again, AKA WSB Forum, with this interesting perspective from a liberal.
I guess not everybody is sticking to the talking points. Maybe somebody should send a fleet of lawyers to censure Paglia…or at least dig something up on her.

Have fun in bizzaro world….

JanSParticipantLBG…is this a reader recommendation? Perhaps this should belong in the Election 2008 topic?
September 11, 2008 at 3:30 am #638517
WesMemberWow! That seemed to me to be the most honest, frightening, and sometimes agreeable article I have read yet about this election. Wow!

acemotelParticipantI love Paglia’s acerbic writing, but I don’t agree with her assessment of Palin, or her views on abortion i.e. the assertion that the pro-life stance is more “ethically highly evolved.” Style supersedes substance on that point, as proof or evidence is left dangling. She states her opinion (or feeling) without going to the heart of the matter – both abortion and the death penalty are deep philosophical questions with ongoing debate, and she skirts the issues completely.
I prefer these Salon articles on Palin:
http://www.salon.com/opinion/kamiya/2008/09/09/mistress_palin/index.html
Sarah Palin is trying to seduce independent voters. But she comes across like a whip-wielding mistress who wants to discipline a naughty America.
and

What’s the difference between Palin and Muslim fundamentalists? Lipstick
A theocrat is a theocrat, whether Muslim or Christian.

JoBParticipantacemotel..
thanks for posting some balance from the same source.
i also love paglia’s voice.. but find her brand of feminist ultimately defeats feminism.
her assumption that feminists are looking for special treatment.. not equal .. and that women should somehow act and respond like men undermines her argument.
I know plenty of women today who would find the idea of hanging out in the burbs and visiting fast food outlets a poor substitute for community gardens and volunteer work for staying connected with the common man… woman who can design and build an addition on their own homes as well as their male counterparts.. women who know the interior of the hardware store or auto parts store as intimately as a suburban matron knows the layout at the mall… woman with rough hands and caring hearts… who know that it takes more than being able to talk like one of the boys to be one of the boys.
I can understand why Paglia would be enchanted with the type of woman Sarah Palin portrays… apparently she hasn’t seen the real thing yet or she wouldn’t be accepting such a pale imitation of the stories she quotes.

charlabobParticipantI’ve spent a long time defending Paglia who has made a career of iconoclasm. I admire her humor and her ability to be unpredictable. She was doing it again in this article until she launched her tribute to Diane Feinstein. Feinstein is the Lieberman of the West Coast. If she’s our best hope for a woman leader, I’m going to wait for the next train.

JenVMemberwelcome back charla!

LBGMemberWow Jo B, thanks for correcting me. I was typing that entry very quickly and used the wrong form. I truly apologize. I’m glad that the WSB rule that requires other members of the forum to correct spelling, grammar and diction is in place.
Seems to me you were once corrected on your excessive use and misuse of quotation marks and everyone was up in arms because the spelling and grammar police were out. You said you were doing the best you could with certain disabilities, but apparently, those disabilities have not kept you from acquiring the title of the Forum Correction Constable.
So again, thank you. This thread might have spiraled out of control without clarification of that word.
September 11, 2008 at 5:51 pm #638524
JoBParticipantLBG..
it seems you weren’t part of the rant thread on the misuse of words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have entirely different meanings..
i was just pointing it out.. not making judgment.
sorry if you read it that way.
and i just realized i don’t know why i am apologizing… the sentence containing the word i pointed out wasn’t exactly respectful communication..
“Sorry, I had to way into the alternate universe again, AKA WSB Forum”
i can see why you thought i was just trading insults…

roundthesoundParticipantI can’t take someone seriously if they shop at walmart, so I had to stop reading this article. There was one comment I found interesting: ‘Now that’s the Sarah Palin brand of can-do, no-excuses, moose-hunting feminism’
Can someone explain what moose-hunting feminism is?
September 11, 2008 at 6:09 pm #638526
ZenguyParticipantThat’s where you claim to be a feminist, but do not actually support any feminist ideals. Like calling a bill the Clean Air Act and then gutting the EPA…see how easy it is?
September 11, 2008 at 7:38 pm #638527
JanSParticipanthehehe…thanks Zenguy :)
September 11, 2008 at 7:53 pm #638528
JoBParticipantWhen women first entered the workforce in any number, they thought the path to the executive office meant acting and sounding as much like a man as possible.
some people mistook those opportunists for feminists.
Women only began adding a substantial contribution to the boardroom when they did so in small numbers in small companies that did exceptionally well.
Now there is begrudging respect for the contribution women make in management…
the ceiling is still there but the cracks get more numerous and wider all of the time.
That is feminism.
kicking boodie and taking names doesn’t make a woman a feminist. it just makes her a bully.
A strong woman figures out what contributed to the problem and looks for solutions that will allow her employees to surmount the obstacles as a team… and create new policies that can be duplicated by others.
A feminist knows that her solutions contribute to success for all women.
a can-do, no excuses, moose hunting “feminist” is only interested in what contributes to her own success.
I think that makes the phrase can-do, no excuses, moose hunting feminist an oxymoron… and an invitation to the kind of crude jokes men reserve for emasculating women…

JoBParticipantoops.. my serious side is showing today
September 11, 2008 at 9:43 pm #638530
LBGMemberJo B…you did mean booty didn’t you when you said “kicking boodie”?
September 11, 2008 at 10:05 pm #638531
JanSParticipantlol..touche…now…the question at hand?
As has been said quite a few times, respectful discourse is very much welcomed…your OP, LBG, opened and ended with an insult…doesn’t exactly bode well for a great intelligent conversation, does it?
It never ceases to amaze me that people are more than willing to come into our “bizzaro” “alternate universe”, make snarky comments, and then get their hackles up when it’s handed back. Amazing, huh….
Have a great afternoon, LBG
September 11, 2008 at 10:10 pm #638532
JoBParticipanti don’t know LBG…
is the euphemism for the female backside boodie or booty? i thought it was boodie as in boodie call.. that is certianly how my daughter and her friends write it so i assumed it was correct,
but i honestly don’t know.
ok ladies.. chime in.. is it a booty or a boodie?
i hope it’s a boodie because i really don’t like what booty implies.. that a woman’s backside is a place for putting one’s boot:(
September 11, 2008 at 10:18 pm #638533
ZenguyParticipantYou are all wrong it is bootah! lol
September 11, 2008 at 10:28 pm #638534
LBGMemberHi Jan S. I guess it depends on what you would consider an insult. Alternate universe comment would mean something that I feel is alternative to the universe I live in. your comment would assume that any alternate universe would be a negative thing. It might be Utopia to you considering that your alternative would be the universe that I live in.
the bizzaro world comment was a tip of the cap to the arch nemesis of Superman. Bizzaro Superman was a hero in his world but in Superman’s world, he was dastardly. This is not to say that I fancy myself to be Superman…just another way to say alternate universe.
You have a great afternoon as well JanS

JoBParticipantSeptember 11, 2008 at 10:33 pm #638537
JoBParticipantLBG..
explained that way your comment seems pretty benign.. but if you read it without the context and then assume that it has just been the opening gambit in a conversation with you.. not so much…
September 11, 2008 at 10:39 pm #638538
LBGMemberword Jo B…word. Now i’m going to get my booty off this thread.
September 11, 2008 at 10:51 pm #638539
JoBParticipantLBG..
this really muddies the water doesn’t it…
i don’t care enough to dig further so maybe i should just stop using a term that was a poor substitution for what i wanted to say anyway…
OMG.. i made the mistake of looking further.. Cassell’s slang dictionary would seem to validate booty..
but it doesn’t mean backside. however, it does explain booty call.
it does mean backside on wikipedia…
the more i read, the less i like. That’s one term i will try not to use again.
thanks LBG.. i love to learn something new.
