The Department of Public Health just called to tell me I had samonella starting about a week and a half ago. Out of curiosity has anyone else have this around the same time?

do they know how you acquired it?

No, that’s why they were calling. I totally could have given it to myself too. Who knows! I was curious if anyone else got sick around August 4-8th.

UrbanFabulous, I hope you get to the bottom of this. How did the Department of Public Health find out? From a doctor’s visit? Have you recovered?

I went to the Doctor’s Express in Burien and they ran tests. I think the Department of Health gets called whenever there is something like that or E Coli so they can trace where the outbreak came from. I am starting to feel better. I’m on antibiotics, but the nurse told me to still be careful around my husband and infant. We don’t tend to eat outside of West Seattle now that we have a baby, but like I said, I could have gotten myself sick at home in our kitchen.

There are many ways to be exposed to the salmonella other than through food. For instance, do you live near or often walk by a sewage pump station? King County and SPU maintain a large number of such pump stations, and there are several routes of possible exposure near them. Also, swimming in “polluted” water can lead to salmonella exposure.

Some other things to think about.

    .

Where I live, on the southeast corner of Lowman Beach Park, very near the Murray Sewage Pump Station, we have had a huge problem with airborne contaminants and very obnoxious and sickening odors this whole summer, with no help from any department or agency or councilmember. None. It is completely unacceptable, but it continues.

I haven’t heard of any outbreaks this year, but lots of fresh produce is consumed in the summer; maybe something didn’t get washed off completely? I know I wash produce more during summer, especially remembering the cantalope salmonella outbreak of a couple years ago? Bacteria was on outside of rinds but cutting through it contaminated interior.

    Hope you get strong soon.

Are you feeding your dogs Iams or Eukanuba? Recall based on samonella.

Duckitude, salmonella is not transfered via the air, even with sewer vapors. To get it you have to come in contact with the virus itself, or direct with fecal matter from someone infected.

Not saying you don’t have odor problems, I have noticed those too. But they aren’t dangerous in this way.

No dogs and the only swimming is at the pool and wading pool which are chlorinated. My infant is with me 24/7 and isn’t sick.

And by virus, you mean bacteria. That’s why antibiotics are the thing.

Kgdlg… you are a damn know it all aren’t you? Do some research before you mouth off. Want some footnotes with that research? I am NOT GOING TO DO THE RESEARCH FOR YOU SINCE YOU ARE SO DAMN SMART. Geez, what is your problem?

Vapors? Did I say vapors? Really. I think I said “several routes” and “airborne contaminants.” Hint: look up aerosolized sewage sludge…

Chill out Duckitude! You are right that I should have linked to my supporting research online, but I don’t think my post was out of line or “damn know it all” at all. I actually thought I was very respectfully disagreeing with you. Here are just two of the many links that confirmed this information for me.

    http://www.ehow.com/facts_5844547_can-salmonella-spread-air-water_.html

    http://www.salmonella.org/faq.html

I added this because I spend a lot of time at Lowman (my daughter loves your ducks) and I don’t want people to be worried that simply breathing the air there is going to give them salmonella.

I do not purport to be an expert here. All I said was that salmonella is not an airborne infection, which is true. If you want to point us all to information on “aerosolized sewage sludge” please do, and we can all read up!

Here are a few sources for you.

    http://deadlydeceit.com/airborne_aerosols.html

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19345977

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3409368/

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22865940

    http://aem.asm.org/content/74/5/1502.full

    http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1574-6976.2009.00200.x/full

Airborne, the word — carried in the air. Borne by air. Get it. What can be borne in the air are things that are much heavier than air, correct? It all depends on updrafts, downsdrafts, agitation, etc. Mists are known to be present in air. Hmmm, like fog, like updrafts from sewage lines caused by pressurized lines due to so many possible factors, I can’t even begin to list. Just think about it. Cooking sewage, sitting in tubes during the summer, with nothing to wash them out and along to the West Point processing plant, create updrafts of hydrogen sulfide, among other things. (I really don’t have time for this)

So, just use your scientific mind.

This summer we have had the worst updrafts, airborne sewage mists arising out of intake fan shafts where the air pressure in the pipes was actually strong enough to blow back through an intake fan and exit at a high rate of updraft into the environment.

The worst air pollution and clearly the worst odor pollution in 25 years at least (according to long-term residents in the Lowman Park area, including 600 feet up the hills, east and southeast)

Honestly, if you let your kids roll around in Lowman Park in the grass, and don’t keep their hands out of their mouths, good luck. The park is a major dog toileting site for up to 100 urinations and close to that in fecal deposits, that are only, as you know, partially or not at all cleaned up.

Wouldn’t let me kid in the park to play even if you paid me.

Additionally, I clearly had two cases of enteritis, with classic Salmonella symptoms, two weeks apart during the worst odors and mists here in early August, with the last episode evolving into a diverticulitis.

Uh, really, folks. I won’t be chilling out for some time. More like amping up for some major shit flinging with governmental agencies.

Also, for any fans (which there weren’t that many anyway) of the Lulu Duckies, please not, don’t waste your time coming down. They are gone, forever. You can thank King County for that.

Take care, it is a jungle out there…

It is unfortunate that you “really don’t have time for this” as you might find more people friendly to your cause if you approached information sharing in a less hostile way. And I am sorry you think you had salmonella! I hope that you got tested by the doctor so that King County public health could do the same notifying and investigation of your surroundings…seems like that documentation would certainly bolster your case here with the surrounding sewage facility.

We believe in more exposure to germs, not less, for a strong immune system, so have no issues about being in grass with dogs, etc. So far our daughter has been very very healthy. But thanks for your concern. We are also really sorry to hear that the ducks are going away. My daughter will literally cry about this. Thanks for your many years of service to the community in this way.

My hope is that the new and improved facility across the street will be a solution to some of your concerns, but again, I am no expert, so will leave you to fight that fight to make sure improvements happen!

Not gonna argue with someone who has that kind of belief system. Latest research on that one boils down to “soil ain’t what it used to be.”

Also, you should be interested, but, then, maybe not. KCWastewater is selling biosolids (sewage sludge) to many customers as compost and the RWSP believes that they are beneficial as fertilizers and soil amendments. Check the RWSP 2011 Annual Report.

Good luck with that exposure to germs thing.

As for “hostile”? Tried all the others, so, it don’t matter, actually. Being nice, being scientific, quoting sources, you name it — the only thing that talks is money. Rationality walks. On this blog, the bullies abound with unalterable belief systems. So, no point. Sayonara.

Now that’s a Ducky Attitude!! What a show! I do have great sympathy for you, Duckitude. I have walked by there many times and it is awful. I don’t know if I could learn to live with it. Will the tanks across the street help with the smell? Maybe all that construction you fought and have to deal with might improve the disgusting air you currently have to breath.

UrbanFabulous, there were a bunch of kids who may have gotten sick from one of the wading pools not long ago. Not sure if it was Salmonella or E.Coli or whatever. May not be the same pool as you’ve been to. Just a possibility, like the billion others that exist out there.

Duckitude: If what you are saying about salmonella from the sewer treatment is true, you are far more reckless for voluntarily living there than I am for letting my daughter crawl in dog poopy grass. I’ll stick with my belief system, thanks.

as an aside, about that airborne stuff, germ/bacteria laden dirt, etc. ….I had a kidney transplant on 8/23, with the accompanying suppressed immune system. One of the things they made sure they told me on my discharge was no digging in any kind of dirt for at least 6 months to let my immune system “normalize” a bit, because of all the things that might be released and inhaled from that dirt….something to think about…

Jan, you essentially don’t have an immune system right now. My mother in law just had a transplant too and I am very familiar with this. If my daughter was immuno-compromised she wouldn’t be crawling around outside. But for kids with a normal immune system, germs are good, not bad.

shed22 and kgdlg…… kgdlg, you got it right, probably won’t be hanging around here too long if there is no fix in sight. So, you got that right.

shed22, not much hope on the air pollution, since the agencies just love to finger point and do nothing much. SPU has pipes, grates, problems in this area unrelated to King County’s mess. They just use excuses and stall, hoping we will get distracted or experience citizen burn out and just go away, with our tails between our legs.

kgdlg….an on top of that I just had 3 treatments of plasmapheresis, which removes all plasma, and antibodies, good and bad. I had some IVIG therapy today, to add back some of the good antibodies…joy, joy. It’s all good…experimental, but good – lol. I will be back on track soon.

Hey, duck. I knnow I’m not the most popular person amongst some of your friends. But, geez, you’re iserable. You have a home, a job, can feed yourself. Crap happens. It happened to you, and I’m sorry about that. I’m sorry you have to put up with the stink, the mess, and the personal attack you think the city is doing to you, Of course, only my opinion. But you’re an adult, a successful adult. And, you know how to cope, you counsel others. But you come across as a super miserable person. And that ain’t gonna get you much sympathy. But a question for you. You took your argument to the city…did other neighbors join in with you, or was it just you? The city doesn’t change plans for just one person…and I wondered if you have more numbers in your ranks.

Everyone else…sorry for the thread jack…

JanS: Such a typical, unresearched, pejorative, “I am better than thou,” arrogant response. Anyone who knows me, knows I am so far from miserable it would take a Mars explorer to get there. Geez, woman. Do your research, then open your godforsaken mouth.

Tons of people I represent. Not just me. I have been the point person for this neighborhood since I moved in in late 2004. Check out the history, if you care, at http://www.onegoodflushdeservesanother.com , http://www.whatnowwestseattle.com , http://www.ronsterling.com/protectlowmanpark.htm and check the West Seattle Herald article several of my neighbors’ efforts to save the neighborhood at

    http://www.highlinetimes.com/2011/05/06/news/lowman-beach-park-neighbors-protest-murray-pump-s

When I say “neighbors” I am mostly referring to renters and rental properties occupied by said renters in this neighborhood, since, due to the lack of leadership by our “leaders” the recent land use related processes and decisions devolved into landowners versus renters and continues to this day.

I rent, for a whole lot of good reasons — proven to me by King County, for sure. If you owned and wanted to live where they are destroying the homes — SUPER PRIME PROPERTY — you would have been kicked out. Just so happens, it was just 19 measly rental units with 30 measly tenants, and landlords that had held 4 of the 6 properties for their whole lives (40+ years) and 2 speculators who got nailed by the recession, who were willing to part with the property for the right price, and screw their renters.

Previously, renters had to die here before you could get into one of those units, including, the one I am in, a two story incredibly cute cottage. I am not joking. The vacancy showed up here when the previous tenant died from breast cancer. Macabre, but true. SUCH PRIME RENTAL AREA THAT SOME FOLKS HAVE RENTED HERE FOR 25 YEARS.

So, Jan, if anyone is miserable and wants to make sure anyone else who may have a down day has no idea of what hurt, pain, near-death fears, and such are really like, since you do, you would be the one. Full of “wow, you think you have it bad” arrogance. Give it a rest.

Good luck with all that. As for me, I smile in the face of death, and would never lord that over anyone.

Jan, maybe you’re confusing “miserable” with “cranky”.
