JoBParticipantgosh..maybe the lawn mower is there to enable the owner of the RV to make some cash the old fashioned way.. by mowing lawns…

JoBParticipantby the way, that RV was not parked in front of the park when i passed by yesterday… it appears that this RV camper cleans up their messes and moves their vehicle.. sounds pretty law abiding to me.

mark47nParticipantI’m not really sure what the point is of the linked blog post. The second to last paragraph is certainly the most interesting of them all. I’m not really sure what the writer is trying to communicate, that there should be sanctions against the homeless in their tatty RVs if they stay for protracted period in the RV lots that the city has proposed?? That being a “gypsy” should not be allowed? not really sure except that I should contact Sally Bagshaw.
I see the RVs all over the place, most commonly under the Spokane St viaduct. I’ve not really seen them in many other places in force except along the fence line, adjacent to Nucor, on Andover. I’ve also noted that they tend to relocate as a group as there is safety in numbers.
In the summer I’ve routinely seen RVs lined up along Beach Dr. both nice and not so nice. Admittedly, the ones in the industrial area are in worse shape with more trash around them.
As to people complaining about them; I would remind you that these are public streets. you get 72 hours unless otherwise posted. You still can’t fling trash about and I’d rather see the port-a-potty than the other options, which I smell routinely E. of the public fishing pier, which cost the city more than a port-a-potty, I’m sure.

miwsParticipantThank you, Mark.
I don’t plan on continuing in this conversation, and whenever that blog is linked here occasionally, I generally will not partake in the thread with something even as simple as agreeing what Jo said above.
All that being said, I think this comic, stolen from Waynster in another thread, sums up the writer of the blog nicely.

Talaki34ParticipantMike,
While the article addresses career success, it actually applies to much more.

clulessinwsParticipantHi Mark. I think the issue is that these RVs are not being held to the same standard as you and I. I’ve tested it out myself by filing a 72 hour violation online on RV’s in a few locations like West Seattle and SODO. Only once did a sticker gets placed on the vehicle by Parking Enforcement. Once, a sticker got placed on the vehicle the owner just scraped it off and stayed put. These are vehicles I drive by every day so its easy to monitor them. To your point, it’s public, everyone has 72 hours but currently, RV’s don’t have to abide by it. Fair? Maybe.

LindseyParticipantClueless, I know my anecdote doesn’t carry any more weight than yours, but I have not found that to be the case. There were lots of 72-hour violators around when we moved in to our house in Delridge. While it took a little while to get regular responses from SPD, they have come to be very responsive. Which is great because stolen cars regularly get dumped by our house so we promptly turn in 72 hour violations. We’ve had some regular RV campers too, who we have communicated with. They were very respectful – no leftover trash or noise or any footprint left. So I guess my comment is that I disagree with your assertion that RVs don’t get tickets.

WalkerParticipantI think it is funny that a person that can work so hard to save feral cats posts crap like this about her fellow humans
January 29, 2016 at 8:26 am #831875
anonymeParticipantOn the other hand, I don’t think it’s funny at all that a nasty, personal attack should be the response to a single post with a link (to an opinion piece by a third party) that merely poses a few reasonable questions. Questions are good; discussion is good. Self-righteous insults based on a mere suspicion of disagreement are the reason I don’t really bother with the forums any more.

WalkerParticipantand yet here you are.

mark47nParticipantHm, I used to spend a lot of time with Hammerhead…a few decades ago, where we were flung together (I still have a great photo of you in the Mk 25, crawling across the deck, circa 1996)…and her care for critters was and is inspiring. I also recall her having less love for people, in general. I support her in her misanthropy.
As to the opinion piece in question, I still don’t get the point of it and found it to be a questionable piece of writing.

Don KayParticipantLots of people love animals and dislike people. I’m not really sure why that is.

hammerheadParticipantI guess need to defend myself. I am driving by rv trailers on Meyers way every single day and seeing the trash that is thrown out on the property that the city is wanting to sell to help these “homeless” people. There are 5 there now. The police departments does not stop and put stickers on them, this is unincorporated part of Seattle and no one wants to deal with it.
Walker: you comment on me saving feral cats. Humans have a CHOICE to do drugs or not and lots of other things, plain and simple, Cats being feral or tame do NOT. Please know the “homeless” people have left cats behind to breed and make more feral cats in an area, that several LOCAL organizations have worked very hard on cleaning up. Prior to nicklesville there have not been any new ferals for almost 15 years, as soon as nicklesville was kicked out plenty were left behind. I even rescued 2 tame bunnies from this area. Just their sheer lack or respect speaks volumes. If they have the money to spend on running these trailers, they should have enough money to LITERALLY run down the hill to the dump.
It is pretty obvious why I am not a fan of the human race in general. HH

JoBParticipantfirst.. let’s just point out that the RVs on Meyer’s way back up to a green space that was a literal camp of last resort for West Seattle’s homeless long before Nickelsville moved back here.
In fact. you would be hard pressed to find any green space in the city that doesn’t have homeless people living there… or RV’s parked nearby.
second.. the RVs on Meyer’s way and the RV pictured in the article you posted have little in common other than the fact that they are both RVs.
The posted RV was well maintained and the resident obviously has enough money to pay for both repairs and gas because it is moved regularly….
perhaps because they use that lawnmower to generate funds.
the residents of the Meyers way RVs do not have the same resources… in fact it is questionable whether a few of them can be moved on their own. I have seen them repositioned by hand.. you know.. several human bodies pushing them…
it’s possible they were saving their dollars for things other than gas.. but it’s also likely that some of those RVs can’t be driven to the local dump even if the owner has the cash to pay for the gas to do so.
And.. not all of the accumulated trash comes from those RVs…
lastly… a good number of “those” people have fewer choices than the cats you rescue… after all.. the cats have you.
The resources available to help those hanging onto shelter by their fingernails are few and far between.
There won’t be enough spots in the new RV spot to hold the vehicles parked along Meyer’s way let alone those i find huddling in their car every morning.
though with luck some of those huddling in their cars will have come to the notice of the local police department and will get a referral…. because without a referral from the police or a local registered social service agency… there is literally no place for them to go but our streets.
You are worried about vehicles parked along Meyers way.. but i can guarantee you that the neighbors in that area would far rather have them parked along Meyers way than in front of their homes.
