JiggersMemberCan anyone explain when it changes from a recession to a depression? What do you look at?
March 7, 2009 at 10:15 pm #659766
PatrickKeymasterThe total elapsed time of a sour economy. General rule of thumb states if the economy goes in the dumpster for 12 to 18 months before recovering it’s a recession. Anything over two years, or three, depending on who you listen to, is a depression.

JoBParticipantright now all news about the economy is pretty depressing.
on the bright side, it’s a really good time to buy some of the things you need but have been putting off purchasing due to the high prices.

RainyDay1235MemberSometimes it all feels like a simple Catch-22, huh? The economy is bad, so people aren’t spending money. People aren’t spending money, so the economy stays bad.
I was at Costco today. We were given a $50 gift card to buy a membership. At the membership counter we were told we could not use the card to pay for the membership, but we could use it to get $50 off a purchase. But of course we couldn’t purchase anything over $50 since we weren’t yet members. I talked the Manager and he made it work eventually, but wow.
Reminded me of the economy.

AdamOnAlkiParticipantA depression starts when the bumps won’t go away.

walfredoMemberA recession is when your neighbor loses his house. A depression is when you lose yours.
There really is no technical difference between the two- its all a matter of perception. Prior to the great depression- all downturns were called depressions. Since the great depression- they decided not to use the word depression anymore- because it was depressing language. Receession was a marketing ploy- if given a do over it would probably get a very happy sounding name. Economic right-sizing or something of the sort.

JoBParticipantthe spending part of the vicious circle is something you can do something about.
spend wisely… use your money to create something of worth for you and your community…
you will likely get more value for your dollar than saving it if the s..t really does hit the fan.
i am spending mine setting up a victory garden… at a rental…
i can’t tell you how encouraging it is to see my red runner beans reach for the sun.. and my sword cucumbers sprout and spread.. and those cold loving tomatoes peek their heads up to see if it is safe to come out.
i suspect i won’t save much money on my victory garden this year… but i sure will enjoy making it happen…
and we will eat well.

JiggersMemberdoes a depression start when i can’t get yum yum anymore?
March 10, 2009 at 6:16 pm #659776
JoBParticipantmaybe before that..
it starts when you start hoarding yum yum because you are afraid you won’t be able to get it any more…
