luckymom30ParticipantYesterday saw 4 cars approaching the intersection of 39th & 106th all drivers had cell phones against ear yakking away, and all 4 cars nearly missed rear-ending each other. Seriously, get off your phones!

miwsParticipantHeh, at least they were “going after” each other, instead of an innocent pedestrian (see avatar ;-) )
bicyclist, motorcyclist, or another (attentive) driver!

luckymom30ParticipantThe 3rd car did have a child in a car seat.

DBPMemberWas the kid on the phone too?
March 20, 2012 at 5:38 pm #751930
miwsParticipantThat’s not good, and makes the behavior of the driver of that car especially, even more appalling.
And, I didn’t mean to imply that I wished harm upon, or didn’t care about safety of, innocent passengers in any of the cars, especially children.

365StairsParticipantIt would be a fairly easy app to create for modern smart phones..Speed Sensor Shut Down at over 3 MPH (over normal walking speed). It would shut down the cell / texting coverage – not the GPS Maps.
March 20, 2012 at 5:47 pm #751932
2 Much WhineParticipant365, I like your idea in a general sense but what about the passengers in a car that are not driving? Why would their calling or texting ability need to be curtailed? And if the app is able to be turned on or off it defeats the purpose as there is already an off button on the phone and a law against talking while driving and apparently people forget about either of those.
March 20, 2012 at 6:02 pm #751933
365StairsParticipantThe devil’s in the details…but the program would match the cell # to the driver / car VIN and shut down…allowing passengers to continue twittering.
There are certainly work arounds that need to be addressed…I was just broad scoping…the person that makes this will be a go-zillion-aire!
Thinking something like Airplane mode – shutting down signals.
Thinking something like the DWI start up process – breathilizer requirement…
March 20, 2012 at 6:08 pm #751934
365StairsParticipantClearly the law by itself is not working…it needs help…
Why is there Red Light cameras – when people know there is a law against this already…
Same with speed sensor traps…
March 20, 2012 at 6:08 pm #751935
WorldCitizenParticipantYeah, must link the phone to the car to start it if the phone senses it is within 2 feet of the steering wheel. Phone goes into “driver mode”. Comes out of mode once car is placed in Park or has slowed to less than 3 mph.
If there is a hands free device attached, the talking function is activated but not text or mobile web. The maps function is never de-activated.
Obviously there are issues with this, but good thinking 365 Stairs.

365StairsParticipantOn a lark…I submitted this concept to an app incubation and cell phone industry consultant…
I really have to believe there are super smart techy geeks out there in the world who have thought of this before this…
Really? Right?
March 20, 2012 at 9:28 pm #751937
justcuzMemberI like the app idea too – though we share a car, so the passenger work-around would be helpful. I’d like to see it exclude 911, but include texts. Maybe a tone could tell you if you had a call/text, but you’d have to be stopped to access. You’re right, 365, someone could make millions – on parents of teens alone!
March 20, 2012 at 9:32 pm #751938
365StairsParticipantjustcuz – the more I thought about the passenger piece…I believe and All HandsFree in Motion process – which would negate the driver from putting another phone to ear.
Texting and Mobile web entry would have to be disabled while still in motion – must be under 3 mph to enter new data.
911 – for sure 100% active – just like now when you lock a phone – you can still use it.
March 20, 2012 at 9:34 pm #751939
365StairsParticipantIf it is feasible and ever implemented, it is gonna require both volunteerism to download (or accept mobile update) and mandated evolution of the laws over time.
March 20, 2012 at 10:07 pm #751940
365StairsParticipantSame lark…requested same information via I-Phone development request…We shall see where this road goes…Safely….

JulieMember“If there is a hands free device attached, the talking function is activated”
Research indicates that hands-free doesn’t actually help; just having the phone conversation takes your brain’s focus away from the driving task. It’s the way your brain works:
http://www.distraction.gov/download/research-pdf/failures_of_visual_attention.pdf
“Experiment 1 used a car-following paradigm and found that participants’ reaction to a vehicle braking in front of them was impaired when they were conversing on a cell phone. Experiments 2–4 assessed an inattention-blindness interpretation of this impairment. Experiment 2 found that recognition memory for billboards
presented in the driving environment was impaired when participants were conversing on a hands-free cell phone. Experiment 3 observed this impairment even for billboards on which participants directly fixated. Experiment 4 extended these findings by showing that implicit perceptual memory for words presented at fixation was impaired when participants were using a hands-free cell phone.”

365StairsParticipantGreat info Julie!
You could argue the radio, GPS, all the buttons and gadgets today’s cars come with, and even good old standard passenger conversation is distraction enough.
Eating and driving is not much better.
Leaning over seat to hand something to a kid – not good.
I fully admit to doing all these things – even using my cell with today’s law.
I would like to see the technology to help the law vs. relying on people to do the right thing.

Dad created an app to shut his kid’s phone off at certain speed. Might be a good thing for adult phones, too.
