Debbie CoghillMemberI wanted to put in a good word for a local business, Pet Care Center on Avalon. They’ve saved my dog’s life twice now. Mugsie is a 14 year old lhaso apso. I took her in last Saturday, she was bleeding. Dr. Su-Chen Griffith said she needed surgery asap but she couldn’t do it that day, but she could get her in first thing Monday.
We had a scary Sunday, she was getting weaker by the hour, but she made it through and they operated on Monday. Had to do a complete hysterectomy, under anesthesia. We got a call in the afternoon that she was fine and we picked her up Tuesday morning and she’s like a brand new puppy! Everyone at Avalon Pet Care Center is wonderful! Thank you.

oddrealityParticipantSo glad your dog made it.
I personally would call that a mediocre vet. If a vet told me my dog needed surgery ASAP but made it wait two days while slowly bleeding to death I’d be finding someone else.
Thanks for the warning.

Debbie CoghillMemberThey don’t do surgery on Saturdays, and they are closed on Sundays. We did discuss the emergency vets, but cost was prohibitive. They gave her an antibiotic shot and further instructions. And they got her in first thing on Monday even though there were other scheduled surgeries. If anything, it was my fault for not taking her in earlier.

catladyMemberWe have been going to Pet Care Center for over 25 years – first with Dr. Pamparo and now with Dr. Griffith. They really care about you and your pet and are very friendly and knowledgeable. It’s too bad they weren’t able to do emergency surgery, but I’m sure they explored all options with Debbie. We also know first hand the expense of an emergency vet.

abstractParticipantWow, I second oddreality. If an animal needs surgery ASAP and a vet can’t do it, they should be sent to a 24 hour emergency vet. VCA Five corners (Burien) or ACCESS (Lake City) are good for emergency situations. Glad to hear your dog made it!

JanSParticipantabstract..did your read the part from the OP that the emergency vet was cost prohibitive? The vet at Pet Care helped her get her pet through the weekend, so surgery could be done. The OP is happy with that. No need to second guess her.

localgirlParticipantWhy so negative and picking on someone who’s dog just came out of surgery. Thank you JanS for pointing it out!!!!!

AlkiKmacParticipantI’m so glad Mugsie made it through. If this ever happens again and you really can’t wait, there are vets with weekend hours in the area who may be able to do surgery. Also, the 24 hour vet in Burien is open day time hours during the weekend. Might be worth checking if there is a weekend daytime surgical opportunity that isn’t priced as emergency to reduce a pet’s suffering.

abstractParticipantI completely apologize. I had not read that cost was an issue. I did not mean to sound negative at all. I just wanted to point out that if the dogs safety was at risk there were other options. I had not read the second post about cost. I have taken my dogs multiple times to Five Corners in Burien and was actually quite shocked at how much cheaper the cost was. Even cheaper than my normal vet! I am glad it all worked out.

localgirlParticipantGood to know about 5 Corners.

oddrealityParticipantAfter the second post I retract my statement…well, I DO wish vets were like they used to be years ago and would drop whatever they could to do emergency surgeries on pets but those days are long gone..*sigh* .
I second the VCA at Five Corners in Burien. Their emergency middle of the night cost was cheaper than my vets regular day time price would have been. We are thinking of switching because besides being less expensive they were also very good!
FYI…They are also a pick up point for Sarvey wildlife center. So if you find an injured or orphaned wild animal/bird they will take it [24 hours a day]and hold it for the Sarvey pick up [which is daily!]. Very nice service for the community.

mehud7ParticipantI am also glad that Mugsie is healing well and back to her old (new) self! I would like to mention South Seattle Veterinary Hospital as an alternative to very expensive emergency vets. South Seattle Vet is open 7 days a week from 7 am to midnight. They are a walk in vet clinic and the vets are wonderful surgeons. If you live in West Seattle you pass them on the way to VCA.

I gotta jump in hereParticipantI’ve been depending upon Pet Care Center for nearly thirteen years- since first moving to WS. Throughout regular and routine wellness care as well as the difficulties of surgery and the loss of two of my cats (old age death handled most kindly with us and for us) over these years, I have been completely satisfied. These vets are such a benefit to my community and I continue to be grateful for their compassionate expertise.

SJoyParticipantI have been going to Pet Care Center for a long time. I LOVE the people there. They are professional, yet very friendly and great doctors! I would recommend them to anyone.
.
If Dr. Su-Chin Dean (Griffith) thought that her dog could make it until Monday then I would trust her opinion. They have saved one of our yorkies lives and am forever grateful.
.
Great clinic!!!!
