My rant..Admiral Safeway produce department not policing the area, especially what’s on the floor. This evening right after 6pm, I walked up to the banana display. The grape display was behind me. As I stepped forward I slipped on a squished grape on the floor, and, of course, arms and legs went flying, and down I went. My biggest fear is falling as I had one hip replaced 4 years ago, and the second one replaced just 3 short months ago. I’m still healing. Well, I half way demolished the grape display as I fell down, my one knee bent outward, and totally afraid to move. I was wearing grapes, I was sitting in grapes – actually probably looked pretty funny.

OK, the RAVE part. Two gentlemen and one young woman helped me up and made sure I was OK. Now, back to the rant…as they were helping me up a young Safeway employee walked past, nodded, smiled, and kept on going. He never stopped to ask if I was OK, if I was injured, could he get me some help. He simply walked up to the front and had someone page for a “clean-up in produce”. The young woman who helped me up went to the front and made sure someone was coming (rant- took them at least 10 minutes – I stayed to make sure no one else fell). An employee showed up with a broom..to sweep up squished and flattened WET grape mess. She was followed shortly by the manager who made sure that I was OK…over and over again (guess he saw lawsuit). I felt that I was OK, and just wanted to get my shopping done and go home. I made sure he knew that I was unhappy that there was no one in produce at the time, that if this had been worse, I think I said that I’d own his store. He chuckled a little. I thought to myself that I was serious.

Two aisles later, the manager came back to find me and presented me with a $50 Safeway gift card, explaining that he was truly sorry that the first employee didn’t stop first and come to my aid before he went for clean-up. So there’s a rave. My daughter then arrived and made sure I was OK, and that I got home, as I was walking.(We’ll see how I feel in the morning, I guess! Oh, it’s already morning, sort of – lol..time for bed)

So..I’d really like to rave about the people who came to my rescue and helped me up and made sure that I was OK. I didn’t get any names, but if you’re out there reading this, I truly appreciate what you did. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you.

Jan, I hope you’re okay, and that no unfelt/unseen at the time damage was done.

As much as we like to laugh at pratfalls in entertainment, in real life, falls are neither fun nor funny. Especially with recent hip surgery.

I have always had trouble keeping my balance when walking on snow and ice, and other extremely slippery surfaces, even when I was young and literally skinny. Nowadays, being extremely overweight, it’s even scarier for me.

A year and a half ago, during the big snowstorm, and resultant packed ice on the roads, it was especially a challenge.

I practically have door to door service to and from work on the 22. I can alternately walk a little further from home, and catch a 54, 128, or 560, and get off at 15th and Roxbury and walk a few blocks.

Any time there is even a possibility of a snow reroute on the 22, it’s especially a challenge. I can walk up to the stop by Chuck & Sally’s, and get the 22, no matter which route it’ll be on, plus have options with the 54 and 128, if a 22 never shows. Problem is, crossing Fauntleroy’s 4 lanes of packed down ice, plus the few blocks extra walk. If I choose the stop on Fauntleroy, behind the Corner Inn, I have options of the 54, and 560, but if the 22 ends up going on it’s regular route, I miss it, and my “door to door” service.

If I work a closing shift, several 22’s will pass by my apartment window during the morning, and if they do on a snow day, I can pretty much figure my later bus will be following the regular route, unless there’s a sudden change in weather, and can catch it at my usual stop near Abbondanza.

One morning of that snow (maybe the first) I was on early shift. I was really nervous and indecisive of what to do, as I would be catching the 2nd outbound 22 of the day, and would only have one other to go past my window, (or not) to determine the likely route of my bus.

The first one went by, so I decided to take my chances, and wait at my regular stop, for mine, due about 40 minutes later.

I wait at my regular stop, and my bus approches the intersection. I’m thinking, “please don’t turn, please don’t turn….” and YAY! It doesn’t!

We’re going up Gatewood Hill, and the first bus is stuck around the 7300 block, just about where the hill starts to level out a bit, near the top, but, still on the steepest part.

We can’t get around it, so we’re stuck too. After awhile, a snow shuttle comes by going downhill, our driver suggests we catch that, and some do, but I and others decline.

About an hour later, we’re still there, and the shuttle comes by again. Our driver said she had no idea when the tow truck would be there, and when it DID show, it wouild be taking the other coach first.

I reluctantly decided to try to cross California, on the hill, to catch the shuttle. I had a cane to help with balance, but still had a good chance of going down.

The shuttle is facing downhill of course, on the other side of the road, a bit uphill from our coach. I start across, get a very nervous feeling, and decide to go back to my side, to climb the hill a bit more, on the grass of the parking strip, and then take a more straight across try. I guess I felt if I could at least get half way across, I could try to grab something on the outside of the shuttle bus, if I felt I was going down.

I make it, WHEW! And I start to board. Another passneger asks me if I had left a (plastic grocery) bag on the 22. I look down, and I only have one of the two. I check it, ands it’s my lunch. CRAP! Leaving that wouldn’t have mattered. It was my shoes, which I brought to change into at work since my boots at the time were tight and uncomfortable.

I consider, for about 1/2 second, going back to the 22 to retrieve them, as I wouldn’t be able to make it to METRO’s Lost and Found, until my day off on Monday, and this was Friday, and I had that and Saturday, to work yet. I decide against it, as all I could picture, in my mind, was doing so, and sliding all the way down Gatewood Hill on my butt! ;) (I later realized, that Monday was the Martin Luther King Holiday, and I’d have to wait yet another week to make it downtown.

The shuttle driver asks what I had in the bag. Prescriptions? I tell him no, it’s my shoes, but I order them on the Internet at $100.00 a pair, and that they are designed to help with my foot problems. He heads down there and grabs them and brings thewm to me. I thank him profusely.

We come back down the hill on the shuttle, and I head home. I decide to stay there, and just call in to work. After calling in, I immediately go online to METRO’s site, and send a commendation in on the shuttle driver. (I memorized the coach number, so they could trace him)

Jan, so sorry to read about your mishap. Let us know how you are doing this morning. Sometimes a night of rest is quite healing… and then there are times when a night in bed gives the body time to say “ouch.” I’m hoping for the first outcome!

Glad to hear you are okay Jan, but sorry to hear about the fall as well as the rude employee that first walked by you…

Jan I was at Admiral Safeway a little bit after that myself…if only I’d been there sooner maybe I could have helped you too. I am so sorry you had a fall. I can only imagine how scary that was so recent after your surgery. I really hope you are feeling OK today… :)

Jeepers, Jan. I know you were curious about stomping grapes, but doing the slip and slide on them sounds a bit extreme!

Gina, I didn’t exactly use my feet to stomp them…more ended up under my nice cushy butt – lol…

I’m sorry to say I have one word here and I await the deluge from the right. SUE. Sadly, that’s the antidote for bad behavior; first you have to get their attention. “Gee, maybe we shouldn’t lay off all the minimum wage aisle helpers — it could cost us money!”

I can only imagine how frightening that must be, Jan, and I hope you’re right about being fine. (I do like the idea of lovingly, butt-smshed grapes in a new boutique-blend.) Take care and let us know if you need errands, pre-smashed grapes, anything else. c/b

    JanS..

the good news is we both have far more grape stamping acreage and padding on our hind ends than on our feet…

but i agree with charla.. you need to make a fuss and they should at least be paying for a workup…

write the store management and copy the corporate office about your fall.. and that while you appreciated the $50 gift card… you think there were serious problems in the way they handled the incident.. starting with the fruit on the floor and ending with a manager who hands you a gift card and then doesn’t make sure you get home safely or have medical care if you need it. Did he even give you his card?

I think safeway should feed you for a long while.. and not just because of the grapes on the floor.

Writing a letter is probably a good idea. A few years ago I was in a Perkins restaurant (a chain) in New Jersey. I have allergies to certain nuts, although not peanuts. (My allergies won’t kill me, thankfully, but can be unpleasant.) I wanted to order the peanut butter pie and asked if there were any nuts in there other than peanuts, because I have allergies. They said no, just peanuts. The pie arrives and it is covered with nuts that look like they might not be peanuts. I ask, explain that I’m allergic, and the server insisted that it’s only peanuts, definitely – they checked. So I take one bite, throat starts closing up, I’m turning red … I’m having an anaphylactic reaction. Turns out that nobody actually *read* the container (even though they said they did) that they shook the nuts out of – it was called “nut topping with peanuts” and had 9 different types of nuts in it, 2 of which I was allergic to.

I left, got some benadryl on the way to the hospital, spent 3 hours in there on IVs, and then went home. Cost me quite a bit in co-pays, not to mention having to unnecessarily go through the whole situation to begin with, ruined my dinner, and wasted my time. I wrote a respectful letter to the restaurant and got a call from the manager who was never informed as to what happened and was horrified since his wife has serious allergies and he takes them seriously. Not only did he give us a coupon for a free return meal for the two of us, but he sent us a check to cover all of my out-of-pocket expenses at the hospital and drugstore, and to cover the dinner that we had in his restaurant.

I didn’t even write to them expecting to get compensated, but letting them know that someone else might’ve died in this situation and that they need to take these things seriously.

Just don’t buy any grapes at the Admiral Safeway this week. Looks like they restacked the clam shell boxes, smushed grapes, smushed boxes and all.

Or else someone else took another spill, and these are differently smooshed grapes.

actually, I know they picked up some of the clamshells that fell on the floor and put them back in the display. Guess they figured that if the grapes themselves didn’t hit the floor, then they’re OK. Makes you really confident to shop there, huh…
