glocsonMemberInstead we have another “clothing” store. I sure miss the concerts and the fun. Why did they not move in there this summer? What a bummer! Somebody messed up/couldn’t get that “clothing” store out of there in time for the summer……..
July 30, 2009 at 11:46 pm #673337
JanSParticipanthey…things change…I suppose you’ll just have to deal with the quiet :) Someone should give up their business, so some radio station can have a party? You’re serious? Offer them your yard :)
July 31, 2009 at 12:17 am #673338
glocsonMemberOh I’m sorry I didn’t know that was your yard….thank’s for the comment/ more negative statement, sniper.
July 31, 2009 at 1:06 am #673339
JanSParticipantSorry I offended…I didn’t mean to. But…has that business given up the space in previous years? I thought the clothing store has been there for quite some time.Maybe 107.7 just couldn’t find an alternate space, so why not offer them yours…that’s all I was saying. Have you asked 107.7 why they’re not down there this year?
July 31, 2009 at 1:32 am #673340
alki_2008ParticipantJust to set some facts straight:
The clothing store is less than a year old. It has not been there “for years”.
One of the reasons the radio station isn’t there this year is because there’s a clothing store in the space.
And the reason a resident can’t offer their own space (home) is because their homes aren’t in commercial areas. You can’t go running a radio show out of a residential area.
July 31, 2009 at 1:47 am #673341
TraciMemberWait….I’m confused….People actually like 107.7? Every now and again I stumble across something relevant, but it’s wedged between old Alice and Chains, Foo Fighters “End Sessions”, and the new Offspring song.
July 31, 2009 at 2:23 am #673342
BonnieParticipantTraci, I actually do listen to 107.7. What are you trying to say? Obviously you must listen since you know what they’re playing.
July 31, 2009 at 2:27 am #673343
JanSParticipantalki_2008..my statement was “I thought the clothing store has been there for quite some time.” I don’t believe anyone said it had been there “for years”. Saying “I thought” meant I wasn’t sure….so thanks for letting me know it’s been there for less than a year.
And I was being a bit facetious about the OP using his yard…but I suppose that doesn’t compute online.
The OP’s statement “Somebody messed up/couldn’t get that “clothing” store out of there in time for the summer……..” struck me as odd/funny/ as it expressed his disappointment that a legit business cut out some of his fun …what a way to support a local business :(

CMPParticipantI’ve never heard of this “beach house” thing so I could care less that it’s not down at Alki this year. But I completely agree with Traci in that the End totally sucks. Radio stations are so bad in Seattle that 107.7 is actually programmed into my car radio. Literally every time I turn it on (which is maybe once a day), they’re playing Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden or Pearl Jam. I almost just turn it on now as a joke to see if they’re playing something other than a Seattle grunge band from the 90’s. And they never are.
July 31, 2009 at 3:54 am #673345
JoBParticipantGlocson..
there aren’t that many clothing stores in West Seattle.. and if the things i have seen hung outside are any indication, this one meets an under-served market…
July 31, 2009 at 5:42 am #673346
charlabobParticipantOK, I’m confused — was 107.1 a pirate station that roamed around and landed by the beach in the summer? If it played 90’s grunge, how did I miss it? (Yet another era I should have been born in.)
Seriously, does pirate radio still exist? Did it ever in Seattle? If that’s not what you’re talking about, um, never mind — I’ll just go and watch Pump Up the Volume for the 27th time.
July 31, 2009 at 6:27 am #673347
alki_2008ParticipantPersonally, I wasn’t that much of a fan of the beach house…but it did attract a lot of people that spent money in the area. And it was just interesting to have something going on in the area. It did take up a lot of space from the cycle rentals though. I’m not trying to knock the clothing store, although it would be interested to know how many more sales are made in that location than when she sold stuff out of her Alki residence.
JanS – I got the “years” from this part of your comment “has that business given up the space in previous years?”. Anyway, just thought it was ironic that your “I thought” should be considered as a question…when commonsense asked a question (with an actual question mark too) in the Chuck & Sally’s thread and you accused him/her of spreading rumors/gossip. Just sayin’.
July 31, 2009 at 7:37 am #673348
JanSParticipantummm…exactly what rumors and gossip am I spreading here? I truly thought that the clothing business had been there for a few years, and that somehow they had given permission to use the property to the radio station to use it in previous years, so please don’t use prior discussions to jump down my throat…apples and oranges here. Good grief…I was just asking. Has the heat of the previous days gotten to everyone?
July 31, 2009 at 7:41 am #673349
JanSParticipantcharlabob…107.7fm (The End) has been around for quite some time. They used to be a much more diverse radio station, playing new groups, interesting music. I actually listened to it for quite some time. When I lived near Alki 10 years ago my apt. was #107 all the way at the end of the hall…was an inside joke with the kid and me (107 the end). Now you hear the new , more diverse interesting stuff on KMTT, IMO.
July 31, 2009 at 1:52 pm #673350
PatrickKeymasterCharla – we were in touch with a guy who had a pirate radio station but I don’t think his mighty 5 watt transmitter sent anything down to Alki. The signal mostly covered Arbor Heights and down Delridge to about Home Depot.
Pirate radio sorta kinda is out there as an old fart hobby, which makes sense given that all the demographics say that radio is only taken serious by people over 50. The charm’s worn off and, as you can tell from the comments, radio is in trouble because it sucks. Podcasting and things like Live365 which broadcasts Ms. LaRue’s stream have made pirate radio a labor and capital intensive dinosaur.
July 31, 2009 at 2:12 pm #673351
GenHillOneParticipantcharla – the beach house was simply a summer promotion, an MTV Beach House rip-off; in all fairness, most radio promotions have been done before by someone somewhere. When you do come up with something original, you know it’s good when someone copies it!
July 31, 2009 at 5:12 pm #673352
JoBParticipantPatrick..
not all radio sucks…
Public Radio in all it’s forms keeps me enlightened and entertained when i am in the car.
it’s too sad if only us old farts are listening :(
July 31, 2009 at 5:13 pm #673353
JoBParticipantalki_2008…
I don’t know if having a store location has increased her sales.. but it sure has increased her visibility since i am probably not the only one who didn’t know she sold things out of her house…
thanks for the heads up though.. maybe it is worth finding parking to take a closer look.
July 31, 2009 at 5:47 pm #673354
maplesyrupParticipantWe have one of the best radio stations out there: KEXP.
My beef with The End is not the grunge but that they play too much pop crap that is thinly disguised as alternative.
July 31, 2009 at 7:06 pm #673355
FoxyDiamondMemberMaple Syrup (You Canadian?) I am surprised it took 18 comments before someone called out KEXP! Hooray for you! Plus Kevin Cole (director of KEXP programming & all around nice guy) lives in WS!!
July 31, 2009 at 7:34 pm #673356
maplesyrupParticipantGotta give props to KEXP even if it was belated.
And no I’m not Canadian although I am often tempted to move there, especially with all of this heat.
August 1, 2009 at 1:34 am #673357
glocsonMemberI just want the music down here on the beach. I think it would serve the beach a little more than a used clothing store. I know where The Goodwilll and Value Village are if I need something like that……..
December 17, 2009 at 6:00 am #673358
bird87MemberThe owner of the store was forced to move into the back room of building becasue her landlord wanted 107.7 to come back. He never told her this would happen, but to save her business she moved all of her inventory. After a few weeks 107.7 backed out of the deal, so she was able to move her business to the front room again. The landlord was sneaky and rude. 107.7 backed out because they did want to be at the beach despite your desire for them to be there. Get your facts straight before you blame a new business trying to make it in a rough economy.
December 17, 2009 at 7:31 pm #673359
villagegreenMemberToo bad KEXP doesn’t do free concerts on Alki during the summer. Never made it to any of their Seattle Center free shows, but it sounds like a great idea.
December 19, 2009 at 11:09 pm #673360
acemotelParticipantKEXP makes me love radio again. The best station EVER!
