We live on 55th near the Dakota bus stop. For months now a metro bus driver (route 51) has been honking the bus horn as he leaves the stop and passes near our house – this starts well before 6:00 am (the other night it started at 2:45). I have filed complaints with Metro and the honking actually stopped for a week or so but it has started up again and is annoying. I don’t know any bus drivers or use this route – the honking may not even be directed at us but it wakes me up. Anyone else bothered by this?

I don’t live in your area but I have frequently been cut off by Metro drivers, and most of the time they’re honkies so I can empathize….

Is there another bus at the stop that he/she is passing? I know that our driver (54x) when passing a stop where a bus is stopped, will beep to let them know they’re passing. So I wondered if that might be why it’s happening.

    Sue,

No, no other bus at the stop, this occurs after the bus has stopped at the bus stop and is pulling away and is 3 -4 doors down from the bus stop.

Maybe the driver is a neighbor and is honking at their significant other at home as they go by. It’s worth calling the Metro office they should know who the driver is on the route. I read honking your horn when it’s not an emergency or a dangerous situation is actually against the law.

    MargL,

I’m sure the driver is honking at someone – just wish it wasn’t before I needed to wake up (when he/she goes by my house)! I’ve submitted complaints to Metro twice but as yesterday and today prove to no avail….Maybe I’ll just have to get up at 5 and hang out at the bus stop and give the clown a piece of my mind (or a blast of my air horn)!

Or you could tape a large cardboard sign to the nearest bus-stop post saying “Metro Driver: Stop honking or I’ll call the police and have you fined!” Not sure it’d help but they’d at least know they were bugging someone. :-D

    MargL,

I dunno, too much like posting a no dog poop sign on the lawn, doubt if the driver would read it! Anyway in my last complaint to Metro (this am) I did mention SPD if the problem continued….

When you call the Metro line (553.3060) ask for a call back on how the supervisor addressed the complaint, I’ve been pretty lucky with that. But you’ll need to keep making complaints for it to be addressed.

And if it really bugs you that much, I’d recommend going out a couple mornings and getting the coach number for your complaint. Not the route #, the acutal coach #.

I’m not sure you should be complaining to metro. the 51 earliest run does not leave the junction until 5:50am and the 57 leaves at 5:43am well after the 2:45am time you hear this. I would guess another service though without businesses in that area I can’t begin to guess what that would be. is it possible its a neighbor leaving for an early shift honking goodbye? we did have that issue in another neighborhood we lived in.
