I will admit that I am a fast driver, but what’s your excuse?

Well wait, you don’t have one. Technically the rules of the road require that all drivers stay to the right on the road, even if they are going the speed limit, but especially if you are going a little slower than the posted speed limit.

The left lane is for those who are passing you or making a turn.

With this being said, I frequent the left lanes on 35th as well as the right lanes because I weave around those of you who feel it’s okay to stay to the left. What’s your guy’s problem??

Danny – so, let me get this straight.

You admit that you’re one of the many speeders on 35th that have helped turned the street (now known as “I-35”) into a nightmare to live or drive on.

And yet you complain about others who don’t follow “the rules”, while you are blatantly breaking the law? The others who dare to get in your way as you weave, speeding, down 35th?

Sounds like you ARE the problem.

I admit that I often times pass by the other drivers on 35th because of their lack of following the actual speed limit.

I only use the left lanes because it is absolutely absurd that someone would think that it’s okay to go 25-35mph in the left lane keeping up with the cars in the right lane, hence blocking everyone behind them when there’s a whole open road in front of them.

As far as living on 35th, I don’t know who in their right mind would do is, especially while raising children. It’s like asking someone to please hit their child (Whether someones going 10mph or if someones going 60 mph).

    Don’t mix my words.

The few times I need to drive on 35th I always use the right lane, the lack of space between two vehicles approaching eachother at 70 mph + while driving in the left lane holds ZERO appeal.

I’ll stay out of the way of those who need to go faster, no problem-o!

DannyQ…so if I drive in the left lane on 35th SW, it’s OK to go over the speed limit? And if that’s the case, how fast can I actually go in that lane, since the laws don’t apply to me then? Can I go 50 MPH? 60? just askin’….

I’m curious why you guys think my going over the speed limit is 50—>60—>70+ MPH?

I probably go 40MPH max (most of the time) and do it quite frequently often times passing the SPD.

When I am in school zones I always go 20MPH.

The stay to the right code gives no provision to allow the passer to exceed the speed limit when passing.

First, the law is crystal clear against any speeding for any reason: http://clerk.ci.seattle.wa.us/~scripts/nph-brs.exe?s1=&s2=speed+limit&S3=&Sect4=AND&l=20&Sect3=PLURON&Sect5=CODE1&d=CODE&p=1&u=%2F~public%2Fcode1.htm&r=12&Sect6=HITOFF&f=G

    And then, bingo:

    http://clerk.ci.seattle.wa.us/~scripts/nph-brs.exe?s1=&s2=speed+limit&S3=&Sect4=AND&l=20&Sect3=PLURON&Sect5=CODE1&d=CODE&p=1&u=%2F~public%2Fcode1.htm&r=18&Sect6=HITOFF&f=G

    SMC 11.52.130

Any person following a vehicle being driven at less than the legal maximum speed and desiring to

pass such vehicle shall not exceed the speed limit when passing such vehicle.

Oh, just to be sure everyone is aware, the WA State law regarding driving to the right pertains to state highways (the WA State RCW is easy to look up RCW 46.61.005).

Note that the stay to the right law for Seattle addresses those roads less than 4 lanes (like a two way with a turn lane, or a two lane roadway). 35th is a four lane roadway so Section B is applicable, which only states that drivers must not cross the center lane.

^ ^ You’re the kind of person I beat up in High School for being an over achiever. ha-ha.

I think that if we were all to be monitored on our driving consistently, we would all fail.

Anybody out there witnessed lots of cars going BELOW the speed limit on 35th, as Danny claims?

    I don’t think so.

To add insult to injury, you also claim that anyone who lives on 35th is not in their “right mind”. It may shock you to know, Danny, that not everyone can afford to live in North Admiral. Your attempt to justify your illegal and dangerous behavior by insisting that those who live on certain streets or in certain areas are not entitled to the same degree of either respect or law enforcement is both elitist and absurd.

No one is “mixing” your words. Their meaning is clear; don’t blame others if the meaning is not exactly complementary. Nobody accused you of routinely doing 50 or 60 – it was a question, one that you answered by saying that you do 40 mph “most of the time” – which is SPEEDING. It’s not OK simply because you blow past SPD without incident.

I drive 35th every day. I was tailgated the other day for going 20 in a school zone and then 35 down the hill to Morgan and 35th. The man sped past me and then weaved in and out to the junction. Maybe it was you Danny? I go the speed limit on 35th, always. I wish others would too!

I would support five-digit fines for speeding in excess of 10 mph of the posted speed limits, or 1 mph in school zones. Traffic fines should be substantially increased first before any tax hike.

I would also support the ticketing and tasering of aggressive drivers. In fact, the City of Seattle should broadcast the tasering of aggressive drivers as a pay-per-view event, which would also generate revenue.

There are too many people here who drive like morons.

lol..now, NF, do they get tasered while they’re driving like maroons, or after they’re stopped.?

Or do we throw them in a coliseum, and sell tickets to the event? hmmm…maybe the new arena down in Sodo after it’s built…that has possibilities….

Hmmmm…I like the arena idea, Jan! You just convinced me to support the new arena! :)

NF & Jan – I like the way you think. I’ve always thought some kind of gladiator ritual would be a good way for certain individuals to remedy testosterone poisoning in a manner that wouldn’t cause harm to innocent bystanders – or other drivers, or pedestrians. Or the rest of society at large.

Personally, I’d rather have tougher driver standards vs the low speed limits we have now. I consistently average 5-15mph over posted speed limits (when traffic allows). I feel like people sometimes don’t realize that driving is an ability at which some are better then others. Our traffic laws are written for the lowest common denominator.

Having seen documentaries where half time at the soccer match consists of jeeps driving up with women to be buried to their necks and then stoned….. This is a very depressing off topic joke

And drivers who think themselves (maybe justifiably) superior drivers have been lucky to never encounter a child on skateboard or bike who flits into traffic for the lack of brakes.

Hey… I live on 35th & I have a child. Feel free to stop by my house to talk about your speeding.

    Bring your lunch.

I think there’s a confusion about the term “limit”. Perhaps some people never got to the level of math where that is defined. A “limit” is the value approached arbitrarily closely, but never reached or passed. Or perhaps the confusion is over whether “speed limit” refers to an upper or a lower bound…. but note, some signs say “maximum speed”, which I have taken to mean that all speed limits are an upper limit. Please enlighten me if I am misinformed.

Julie-All that’s well and good, but what if you’re approaching that limit from the right side (assuming that your dependent axis is increasing)? Then someone who is speeding could never cease speeding.

Besides, Number Theory is just a theory. Or something.

Just kidding, by the way. I like the geekification of this thread. Hopefully somebody with a math degree will come by and geekify this thread into the stratosphere.
