Are your annual plant sales a fundraiser for a non profit?

If not, it is breaking the WSB rules to post your for personal profit on the forum.

Forum rules state – -Post about a deal, sale, or free offer in the Freebies, Deals, Sales section (bonafide major price cuts on merchandise/services, not just consultations – we reserve the right to evaluate whether a deal posting crosses the line to “free ad”) – states nothing about being a non profit or personal profit not being allowed. There’s lots of sales on here and these ones have been on here for years – she has great plants at great prices. Highly recommended!

Here’s the deal, as I have told some off the site.

Believe it or not, after more than a year in the making, we’re making progress on classifieds. Yes, please DO believe it when you see it, but when you churn the way we do, 7 days a week, working on major projects – and that one is bigger than other things we’ve done lately (vastly improved the Pets and Events pages functionality, added the three-years-in-the-making Restaurant Guide, carried off another successful Garage Sale Day) … is a challenge. We have a great developer, I’m the bottleneck in terms of figuring out a few last things.

Anyway. So that will solve a lot of these things. But in the short run, assuming the privilege is NOT abused – like, sales every single weekend – I’m having trouble figuring out where to draw the line between a garage sale and a plant sale. Maybe a rule you can only post so many per month? But then how do I enforce it … we don’t have time for that.

So for the short run, again – always our prerogative to change our mind, review for abuse, etc. – I’m not going to declare this a violation. Still open for discussion, and PLEASE don’t try to reopen other rules … I just don’t have the bandwidth for it right now; be patient with us on the long-long-long promised classifieds, which should solve many categories, if people are interested in using them. – TR

I also don’t get why this keeps coming up. Though maybe not the intent, it feels a little like bullying when various posts are questioned by the same person. I’m sure there are enough gardeners to go around, supporting both good causes and personal hobbies alike. Don’t think anyone is getting rich here.

Since this is being left open, I’m compelled to RAVE: Last summer I went to OrganicPlease’s sale on a whim and was blown away by the varieties, healthiness, huge selection, and uniqueness and rarity of her plants. I bought several items for just a few dollars and everything was fantastic. I got a ton of information, too, and made a very pleasant aquaintance with Ms. OrganicPlease. :-> Rules are rules wherever you end up on this one, but once you attend I think you’ll agree that it’s somewhat inconceivable how she’d be profitting much if at all given the setup and work that’s evident in the value of what she offers–this is a labor of passion for sure. I can also say without any doubt, had I made the right turn to Home Depot, I would have spent 5 times as much for the same quantity, and half would have straggled and the other half would have been mediocre, so there is truly a community service going on here.

i concur. it has always been a sale. in my mind also a deal due to the reasons singularperson states above. the sale is for approximately 4-6 weekends during the spring and then it is done.

it is my go to source for tomato starts and various other garden goodies.

i’ll be there tomorrow, hopefully pineapple tomatillos are still available. :)

The reason it comes up is because there are other ‘gardeners’ and people with small backyard nurseries that have regular, and multiple plant sales that do not post on the Forum. The reason they do not is that the plant sale is not a fundraiser…all of the money goes to them. They do not want to break the WSB rules.

Organicplease has been developing her plant sales as a side business to her current business, which is why she has mulitple plant sale weekends. It seems like she should respect WSB forum rules, like the previously mentioned people and if she wants to post her sale at least offer to pay for some advertising.

I agree. I went there last week and the woman was lovely, her plants were hardy and her prices were reasonable.
